It's great to see these. As a Grand National aficionado, I love seeing horses I know most of all from that running in other quality races. Not that I didn't watch these as a child, but they're not so easy to recall - or indeed find footage of. Thank you so much for posting!

I was 17 and homeless when this took place , I’m ashamed to say I was taken in by a nice couple and I repaid them by stealing £5 out of her purse and running down to the bookies and put it on Fighting Fit .. as I was a lowlife arsehole at the time .. 🤦‍♂️.. I’ll never forget the pressure listening to that commentary on the run in , won @ 13/2 collected my winnings and sprinted back to the house and replaced the £5… I used the winnings to help get my own place from council and found work not long after , I turned my life around and never stole or let any friend down again . So yes , a very dick move from an immature Twat but it was a lesson I took and used in my future life .. these stories don’t usually have a happy ending , but it did in this one instance - thank you Fighting Fit 🙏

Was this the year that the BBC missed the race in order to go to a rugby international?

The race which is in the clip!

You misunderstand me! The 1979 Hennessy wasn't shown live due to a late start to the race and a clash with an England Rugby international. This came from Peter o Sullevans autobiography.

I believe they showed it after the rugby.

@@babaza1972 hi Duncan, I remember it well and you are correct sir..Peter O'Sullivan was fuming and so was I ,there was no need to leave the race due to the Rugby starting n Rugby had far to much coverage anyway and a very overrated sport in my view..The Hennessey is a prestigious race and should have been shown n not sacrificed,!!!!😠😠😠 ..Sadly there is no racing on the BBC and ITV s current racing is a flop and uninspiring 👎👎👎 .Also the Grand national in my view is a joke and pointless comparing Tiger Roll to Red Rum is a total miss match. Do u have any special memories or views sir .,kind regards Glynn n Greetings from Stourbridge West Midlands UK

@@glynnevans1851 The Grand National is a joke now,it should of been left alone! Once a year punters who cannot stand the dangers has forced changes to the course, they are not compelled to view it or bet either.

A case of what might have been for Fighting Fit. Won the Scottish National as a novice earlier that year (beating a certain Aldaniti), and must have been in the Gold Cup reckoning but for injury. Was never the same when he came back a couple of seasons later.

MrGezz66 Same comment applies to the following year`s winner Bright Highway, who won the Mackeson & Hennessy within a fortnight and was favourite for the Gold Cup but injury ruined his career.

Ken Oliver I think he must have trained his horses on cobbles. He had the two best staying chasers in the country in Fighting Fit and Rambling Jack. Both as you say were never the same after suffering injuries. I think I am right in saying he bought most of his horses from Padge Berry in Ireland. Good trainer never got had good fortune however. I think probably still the best trainer Scotland produced. 5 Scottish National winners. Can't be bad.
