My favorite song
It sounds like Bruce Swedien at the beginning announcing take 4.
Bruce would record different instruments in true stereo pairs, which is why you're hearing and seeing what you are while analyzing this multitrack, including portions of the drum kit. He is among the greatest engineers of all time.
This is fantastic! I'm always frustrated when I know I'm not hearing important elements of a song. You did this so well. Thank you.
Just saw another video in which a 2nd engineer accidentally recorded over part of Benson's solo. Quincy called up Lee Ritenour (who plays other tracks in here, and also set up the rig for Benson, with that octave shifter) to come in and recreate it.
I just that video. Really interesting stuff. That second engineer probably lost job that day. George was already in Hawaii and Lee was called at midnight by Quincy.
The video was an interview with session great Lee Ritenour, who is on the session and tells the truth about what happened on that session.
Rod Temperton written and Quincy Jones produced. Good breakdown.
Yes sir the original MJ team before MJ
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE this song with Temperton and Jones' marks on this song. This the ONLY video I've ever seen with a detailed breakdown of this song, piece by piece where I can study it. Awesome video!
There was another YTer that had his whole channel with songs that were multied track. He shut it down about 3-4 years ago.
100% love this song.
The drums weren't recorded separately. It's just a big big production.. And back in those days the sound engineers working on this did a great job!
OMFG I'm trying to play that tune on guitar for months and I finally understand Georges Benson is actually using an octaver ! That makes it A LOT easier to play (I was trying to play all octaves by hand, what a nightmare!) and way closer to the tune's vibe. Thanks you for the insights!
That's because the rhythm part is Lee Ritenour
Lee Ritenour tells the story about how part of Benson’s solo was deleted - about 2 bars he said- and Ritenour had to re-do it without Benson’s knowing it
Background Vocals: Patti Austin! 😍
I love this song, the bass line is killer and all!! ✌️☺️
Where are the strings and horns? These were left out. Thank You though for this! It's so very interesting, to see and hear how one of my favorite songs came together!
Link download please.
This track would totally have used a LinnDrum if it had existed (It wouldn't for 2 more years). As a drummer, I probably would have totally overplayed this and ruined it. Kudos to John Robinson for doing ONLY what was required and let the rest of the instrumentation do the heavy lifting.
Hey I really enjoy watching you dissect the individual instruments to this classic and one of my all time favorites. May I ask how did you obtain the files? Thanks.
That first guitar part is Lee Ritenour not Benson
Abe Laboriel Sr. on the bass guitar. Why Rod covered it with the moog bass is beyond me but that's why I buy music and he made and produced music.
Hey There Buddy What Happened To The Rest Of The Instrumentation Of The This Song Ex: Strings, Horn Section, Handclaps These We’re Not Part Of Your Study Here. Can You Please Kindly Do One With All The Tracks That We’re On The Actual Studio Recording??? P.S. Listen To The Album And You’ll See What I Mean. Thank You So Much!!! Love Your Chanel👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
THIS. There's a synth missing also on the part where he says "Starlight look in your eyes" I came here just to hear that solo'ed
I’m here to hear that chorus vocal isolated
The bass is *probably* a Goya Panther…
Please do a song from Mariah Carey , especially a newer song would be amazing !!! I love your channel and what you do btw
fun video for a non-producer
Where did you get the RAW track?
That's what I want to know. Too many bass players are doing covers without knowing the true bassline of this song.
Good job man but …. Please :less comments, more listening .
I agree but it is hard to do as I face copyright infringement if I don’t add a certain amount of original content to the videos. Sorry that I cant deliver the tracks on their own.
"good job, but you should violate fair use and get your video copyright claimed and lose income"
hahaha! yes exactly! But hey income isn't really a thing in the youtube game unless you're adding like 3x Zeros to the end of my views so maybe i should!@@christianlarson4201
