Once again, nothing in the video (aside from mileage correction) is illegal and we have no reason to believe that the dealers are aware of the history of these cars.
Although the car reviews are great this type of video is by far the most important for the viewer to watch. Thanks for the info Jim and keep on plugging this massive problem in the motor trade.
Brilliant video Jim, thank you. I reckon this can fairly be described as a scandal - maybe we should all be writing to our MPs demanding action, which let's face it would be a pretty simple fix.
My goodness What a shock! Its a bit naughty that cars like these can get brushed off and not flagged by insurance companies. Well done for unearthing some of these hidden horrors and shedding some light on this matter. Thank you!
Great video. I always perform an online check before buying a car. I've seen cars advertised as HPI clear with outstanding finance against them and mileage discrepancies. Spending a few quid on a vehicle check upfront massively reduces the chances of future hassle and further cost. It's even more worthwhile at the moment with the used market still being hugely inflated. Any dealer who is willing to sell cars like this is not worth the custom in my opinion. I note them down and will never, ever buy from them.
Thank you for highlighting this again, it is so important. Apologies if you mentioned this but if you bought one of these cars and was involved in an accident, could your insurance company null and void your insurance?
Hi Richard, it's a material fact whcih should be disclosed if known but as it shows as clear on the mainstream checks then it would be fine from that perspective - in my opinion anyway.
Brilliant info thanks. Iv just paid to check a can I bough 7 months back. Nothing wrong with it but thought worth a check for a tenner. Was all fine. Thanks
Absolute madness Jim. Thanks for reminding us how many dodgy cars are out there. Nothing wrong buying a cat n or cat s, I was looking for one myself. If repaired professionally and your plans are to keep the car forever..they can be an absolute bargain, at the right price of course -30% at least) that VW though..ex taxi, mileage issues, unrecorded. Unreal.
If Joe Public can pay £10 to check out a car's history, why don't the dealers who could probably get a decent discount as a regular trade user of the service? I had to help my younger daughter get a used car last year and I changed my car for a used car on 1 Feb. On both occasions I paid for a history check similar to the ones you show here, and fortunately on both, the cars came out clear (apart from the uncleared dealer finance, which they then explained to me). Well worth the peace of mind. Shocking that the cars you checked remained on sale with no subsequent warning by the sellers that they were write-offs. For those that complain about Cat S and Cat N cars being repaired and put back on the roads, that is the whole point of these categories, the cars are repairable, but it's not financially worthwhile for insurance companies to do so. A garage using "spare" time to work on such cars, or a private individual doing it for a hobby, can do so legally
Bought a car from Car and Classic this week. Just did a Vcheck and thankfully all clear, looking forward to going and picking it up now more than I was.
I do love these videos, it's just insane, so that merc should be what £22k instead of £27,500, I'm sure thousands of people have not done checks and brought cars with hidden history!
What's amazing is that, in the age of instant information, so many insurance companies, vehicle auction companies, car repairers and car dealers are complicit in an utterly dishonest set of scams. What's even sadder is that gullible consumers fall for their attempts to display honesty and integrity
All that’s is required is for the regulator to make it obligatory that insurers record their write offs, problems are then solved but the issue is constantly ignored. I hope this video gets shared as much as possible to get plenty of eyes on it.
Always!! Buying from a dealer should be treated in the same way as buying privately, there are some good dealers but also some very poor ones, including main dealers so always do everything you can to protect yourself. There’s so much to check I even wrote a book about it 😉
Just one question, a friend of my daughter was told by the RAC her car is an Ex-police car, i did a vCheck on it and could not find out how to tell this any chance you can do a video on this or link to one.
I don’t know either to be honest apart from holes in dash where equipment has been attached and the fact that they’re usually total base spec but with a big engine (not always though). They’re generally very regularly serviced but the BMW diesels have had lots of issues due to the way the police use them.
Great video Jim as always, if I were to check a car that I had bought from a dealer and found it to have had previous action, would the dealer be liable as they have sold a car that wasn't as it should be and also the insurance category and value would be incorrect.?
Hi run a V check on this FE20HUA but the Category says Used Unrecorded yet the car has been involved in some accidents and the dealer selling as though all is good just with a few discount. Pls what do you think
Unrecorded means it’s been a write off but not recorded, just like the examples here. Check the work has been done properly and expect to pay about 25% less than normal retail.
Buyer beware , has never been so true , everyone buying a used vehicle , should always do a vcheck , or any other similar car history check , How are insurance companies not required to record a catagory s, That law needs changing ,
100%, vast majority of them do but it only takes a handful not to and this happens. Simple regulation change solves the problem but nobody seems to care.
I didn’t to be honest mate, I asked the good folks at V-check for some examples and they sent these over. Whilst I was looking for a car for the family I doing several during my search including a couple at main dealers.
I personally think that if you want to sell a car on these car magazines and websites that you have to get the car checked properly yourself to be able to post it up
But Autotrader does state if a car is an insurance write off. My current car is a cat N and this was clearly displayed on Autotrader. So I'm not sure why the ones you in your video does not state write-off.
It won’t show anything that was an unrecorded write-off, therefore their category checks are pointless. There will be several thousand write offs going through there each year that are actually unrecorded cat s/n
@@DefinitelyNotAGuru Thanks for clarifying. This should be illegal. How can we actually know if a car has been clocked? Are these hpi websites accurate in determining that?
I’ve bought a car on hpi passed it checks found out it was stolen and recovered and has pictures of the car damaged. The finance company don’t want to know now taking legal advice

in purchasing vcheck is it being paid by per vehicle check?
You pay for each check you do, so if you check k 3 cars you need to pay 3 times

I’ve done a check on a cat a car I was interested in. It’s says it’s a write off but there is no salvage history. Need help
If it’s Cat A neither it nor its parts can legally be sold or used; it has to be crushed. Hence no salvage history as it can’t be salvaged.
