Firstly congratulations on your marriage.
I am facing the same problem for a different reason. I have over 350 games and games have been in my life for 60 years. Now I have no gamer friends, I live alone and just cannot justify seeing so many beautiful games that I will never play. It is really hard but I have to see at least 300 games leave the nest. It sounds brutal, but I have no one else to share my enjoyment with. I knew this day would come, but still painful.
Thank you for sharing your pain too. I feel it over here in the UK.
You could try to look on social media and find people to play with. Is there a local game store you could meet other players at?
I've never seen any of The Purge Movies. I didn't expect it to be so brutal.
@@chrisdonovan8795 It’s worse than those movies could possibly imagine.
After the purge... TIME TO BUY MORE GAMES! I have space now!
@@vikingcathq Ha! Why not?
as someone who has collected over 1500 games and expansions ... you have inspired me !!! I did donate about 50 games to a new board game bar that just opened up near me but I plan on doing a big purge soon .,... and yes ... every choice is hard, so i feel your pain !!!
@@Viegosdream Thank you. Best of luck!
I can feel your pain. I wanted to purge some games but couldn’t bring myself to do it. Yesterday, I ended up buying 3 shelves (thankfully I had the space) and I was able to hold off for just a little while longer before I need to purge some games. The truth is, I really like them all.
@@SoloBoardGamingKnight It’s tough. Thanks.
Ahaha when I read this at first I thought you meant you bought enough games to fill 3 shelves.
@@enjoythestruggle After building the shelves and organizing my games, I already filled half of all the space available. At least I don’t have games stacked up and placed in different places of my game room anymore. Upcoming Kickstarters should have no problem filling up the empty spaces.
Another thing to consider: A good friend of mine, a gamer, died a few years ago. His brother reached out to me and asked me if could find a home for his games because he knew that he loved them, and didn't want them thrown out. I took the responsibility and asked his friends to create ranked lists of games that they might like.
It was rough. I really wanted his anniversary edition of Carcassonne, but I insisted that his brother take it since it was one of my friend's favorite games. I hope he played it.
Anyway, you can't take it with you*, and at least you made some friends happy. Pus you can visit some of the games on holidays, and every other weekend.
* If you want to crowdfund the Great Cody Pyramid so that you can take the games with you, let me know. I'll donate. :)
@@chrisdonovan8795 Ha! That’s an idea!
Congratulations on your wedding, Sir!
@@dr.jones117 Thanks!
Wow! Congratulations Cody. I’m close to 2,000. 😮 I’m facing at least 500. I figure it will take a year…
@@RCarlson01 Best of luck!
The GMT bookcase was painful to watch! I feel such empathy for your plight…
Yeah, that one was really tough! Thanks.
Good choice on keeping Space Hulk Death Angel: The Card Game. If you had regretted purging it later, you’d have to sell a kidney to get it back.
Yeah, the fact that its OOP is one of the major reasons I kept it. A friend gave it to my for my B-Day like twelve years ago - still haven't got it to the table yet.
You got rid of He-Man?!?! You no longer have the power...
D'oh!
Nice job! I'm currently in a purge myself and have a list of about 85 out of 347.
Congrats on the wedding and hopefully your move goes trouble free!
@@xD3adKl0wnx Thank you. All moved in now.
I have moved from overseas to the US mainland, and I have moved within the same state and used storage units for months. My games (150-200) have survived and done very well!!!!
Wrap each game in bubble wrap twice around. Use any kind of movers tape to hold the wrap in place. Take 4 games, stand them up vertically, and wrap them in saren wrap. Set them in the box vertically. Cushion them on the sides and up top with material or bubble wrap.
This will work with the majority of your games, prior 2017 crowdfunded games. You will have ALOT of boxes this way, and the weight adds up, but this is the safest way to pack and move your games. You will probably have around 40 boxes of games.
For medium size games and large games, wrap them in bubble wrap until they are a little bouncy. If you can, pack them in the smallest size box (that may be pretty big), by themselves. Or if possible, 2 games vertically.
The games that gave me the most challenge were ‘Mechs vs Minions’ and ‘Scythe Big Box’, and ‘Gloomhaven’. These were literally a box within a box. But they were protected. My babies were ‘Mythic Battles Pantheon’, ‘TI4’, ‘Eclipse 2nd Dawn’, ‘Xia’, Memoir ‘44, and ‘Super Fantasy Brawl’.
For your special games, bubble wrap them until you are satisfied, seal them with saren wrap.
Good luck!!!
This whole process will take about 5-6 hours, shorter if you have someone doing it with you.
Great advice. I've actually already moved by this point (video was shot months ago). Thanks!
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer oh crap!!!
I hope your games do great! Congrats on your marriage, may it be a happy and caring one.
@@cfosburg Thanks!
I have ONE war game, and that's The Grizzled and the expansion. For reasons I won't go into, they're not my thing, but The Grizzled is a master class in theme. I played it with my Game Club students in my high school. They were so deeply engaged in that game.
I'm glad that you kept it.
Also, don't think of it as just losing a hundred games. You also gained your wife's collection! Congratulations.
@@chrisdonovan8795 Ha! Right?
I don't have that many games, but I go through this with my personal library all the time. Even with my games, I always ask, "When was the last time I played it? Is it always fun? Is this something I want to teach to other people? Do I have similar games?"
@@darrickdean1849 Right? It’s always tough. Thanks.
Kevin and I watched with great interest, as well as howling with laughter and pain as we watched you go thru your collection. Many of the games we knew were your favorites, but others we were surprised at. We are thrilled for you and your new wife. Maybe someday we'll see you out here discrimating at PAX Unplugged in Philly. Feeling your pain out East. Miss you and gaming with you!!! And also miss you onstage❤
Thanks JaNae. I miss you guys, too. Hopefully we'll share a gaming table again sometime soon. Take care.
watching you go through this is a whole body experience. i feel like i can really feel your pain
@@DoppelgangerF02 Ha! Sorry to out you through it.
Thanks for the candid look into your purging process. I know I need to do it myself sometime. Also congrats on the marriage!
Thank you very much.
First, congratulations. I'm getting married towards the end of the month myself.
Second, I'm impressed that your permanent collection is only 300.
I don't have the same moving/consolidation issue, and my Fiance has games in our collection, so it's blended, and has a handful of children's games, but sits at about 185 games/250 boxes. If *I* were to purge my collection by 1/3, I'm afraid that I may purge more of "her" games and the children's games. Although that would slim my collection, it would probably hurt gaming in my household.
I love seeing games that we share in common. TI4 is one of my favorites also, I had been studying TI3 before stepping beyond "RISK" level gaming.
@@bluedevil3d104 TI4 is fantastic. I don’t get it to the table nearly enough.
With your purge of ISS Vanguard and Scythe early in the video, I was preparing myself for a bunch of disagreements...but keeping all of the "old" FFG shelves helped settle the heartburn.
Yeah. FFG in its heyday - nothing like it.
“This is such a good game. I don’t want to do this, I don’t want to do this…purged.” 😂
@@mikeporreca5209 It’s true.
Congratulations! Hope you have an amazing day and enjoy growing old together. Two are stronger than one.
@@andrewshaw7856 Thank you. Much appreciated.
In the past 4 weeks, I did the same thing. My last count of games was 254, but it was probably 10-15 games beyond that. I purged in "sweeps" or "passes" of 15-20 at a time. I only count games if they are a stand alone game. I have nearly all the expansions for Memoir 44, but count it as one game. Its amazing how many of the exact same games you agonized over, I also did. So I definitely feel your pain. My goal is to get down to 100, currently at 140. I totally agree on this being a first world problem. I had so many games I couldn't see the trees for the forest. Much better now.
@@robertmoffitt1336 It’s not an action for the feint of heart, for sure. Thanks.
Congratulations on your new journey sir!
I understand the purge pain. Im in the process of it myself, but at a slower pace. It was hard at first, but the real favorites get played more. There is something to be said for repetitive plays of games you get to know more, and not having to relearn the rules.
I got some of those plastic photo cases on Amazon and managed to fit around 55 small games in 4 cases that takes up about 2 feet by a foot and a half of space. They are excellent for portabilty too. Some of the original game boxes were way bigger than need be. Im keeping them in bins out of the way for now.
Off topic, but Marvel Legendary 2nd edition core game is coming soon, and word on the street is DC Legendary may be coming down the road, as Upper Deck recently obtained the rights for future DC product.
Interesting. We'll see how that goes down. What is your source for these details?
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer This is from a Forbes article concerning the DC/ Upper Deck deal....
"Several of the series will also integrate with Upper Deck’s tabletop game system, Legendary. “That’s a very well known and stable product in the market applied across many of our IPs, and DC will get a treatment in that. That’s where you’ll find rarity and collectability and things of that nature,” said Masherah. He also revealed that the “Batman: Enemies of Gotham” collection will debut a new game mechanic set in the Batman: The Animated Series universe."
The Marvel Legendary 2nd edition core game was announced at Gen con, featuring new art and reworked cards, and we assume updates of the core masterminds. It will also include 50 more cards than original and a Doctor Doom playmat. The original core game will no longer be reprinted. Release sometime later this year or early 2025.
Congratulations on getting married! But my heart broke for Mr. President.
Yeah, that one was tough. Thanks.
Contrasts on the wedding sir! Purges are always painful, IF you want you can count big box games as two games :).
@@rochedl Now there’s an idea! Thanks!
Congratulations on your marriage!!!
Purging is always hard. Over time, I have purged multiple times, and I'm more picky when I add games. As a result, it gets harder and harder to make those cuts....
It's extra hard when I watch this channel and find new games that I really like and want. xD
@@ericengstrom2138 Sorry. And thanks.

@@dotista2008 Glad you like it.
Getting married? Tired of being happy? 😀
Ha! Right?
Well as I told Cody I am not taking the games I am only holding onto them until he wants to play them or take them back when he gets more room. One of the advantages of your kids moving out and you can turn there rooms into game storage areas. 😁
Now time to get back to learning new games rather than playing any of these.
@@RayPhay Ha!
Congrats on the marriage, and I feel you on moving loads of games... major hassle. A purge is typically a requirement every time. What really sucks, in my experience, is reselling games rarely nets anything close to what one paid for them. But I take into account whatever previous fun I had with the game as part of the ROI, so the resale doesn't sting quite as bad.
@@SolidStateSoul Good point.
Cody, I've been doing the same thing for the last week, slowly purging my games by selling them. I'm planning on moving early next year, so I'm getting a head start. It's a shame because I want to play all these games I have, but circumstances have changed since I started gaming, no more gaming group, so it's solo or with my girlfriend, who doesn't like anything too rules heavy. It's still tough, but you've inspired me to go harder! They just take up so much damn space!
It's tough, but I have confidence in you. Best of luck.
Congratulations on the marriage! The discriminating gamer lives up to the discriminating part of his name!

@@davidcanas105 Thanks. That was a tough one.
Hey Cody, although Maria herself would likely be appalled, I house her in the same box as the old Fritz. I get it to fit along with the bottle cap token holders I built for both games, so you should have plenty of room if you want to do likewise. Also, I would like to let you know that Friedrich is on "Rally the Troops" if you want to get some online async games in. The interface is super intuitive and easy to use.
@@dustbustus27 Thanks for the tip. I might have to do that. As for Rally the Troops, I’m not much for board gaming online, right now. Maybe someday. Thanks.

That was tough to watch, but boy do you (still) have a lot of games. I start to look at getting rid of some games when my collection starts to get around 50+, and usually my rule is if I haven't played it sometime in the last year out it goes.
@@danmillar6323 Wish I had that discipline.
Purging ... sure you can! Over the past 1.8yrs, I've *sold* 488 games / gsame collections / game systems (everything goes along with its expansions, promos, etc). Giving away or donating would be a *lot* faster. Unfortunately ... for me, letting them go "easily" required a shift in mindset, to viewing games and the hobby more harshly. That hasn't been fun. Good luck with your efforts, sir!
@@jpotter2086 488! Yikes! Thanks.
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer YIKES indeed, as the first prerequisite of being able to get rid of 488 games is .... having 488 games. Wheeeee....
The struggle is real. I have about 360 game currently in my collection. Many overlaps with your titles. I too am going through a purge but slowly. Going back and playing games with my wife and together deciding to keep or not. Except the wargames. She does not play those. I have a few friends for that as well as table top historical war games with painted lead soldiers.
@@reftomgreen82 That sounds like a good system.
Like you said, an insane collection (Mine is, embarrassingly, bigger than yours with 40 I've never played yet), is a _First World Problem_ and if I lived somewhere where I could unload them, I would do a lucrative cull.

Congratulations on the wedding Cody and I feel your pain for having to downsize your collection but I have to say that some of your “keep” decisions I found confusing. I don’t know why you kept Twilight Imperium Rex when it’s just a retheme of Dune which FFG couldn’t get the license for. I own Rex because Dune hadn’t been reprinted at the time but now that it has I don’t understand why you’d keep both?
Same question for The Resistance with the Hostile Intent and Hidden Agenda expansion which basically adds the stuff that The Resistance: Avalon added and then some.
Shadows Over Camelot is well worth keeping but SoC: The Card Game was never that great (in my opinion).
Oh and you should definitely try This War of Mine! It’s tough but it’s one of my favourite cooperative games.
@@jacktorrance3522 I keep Rex because it’s out of print, and most likely will never come back. It’s a rare find that I’m sure someday somebody will want and its value will go up. Hi, I've managed to combine expansions / theme variants into the base / original game box after throwing out the plastic inserts.
I noticed you said you had put an expansion into a base game box once. But I saw more opportunities on your shelf to reduce down by combining. i.e. Ticket to Ride.
Is this something you don't like doing? I have a friend that is horrified that i throw away the boxes for expansions / new versions regularly.
