    Couple of years ago someone paid me to clean off the old paint on their fishing kayak and repaint it with a KISS End Of The Road Tour theme. I did it and best of all I did it in glitter and glow in the dark paint. Looked awesome for sure. Fun Fact: I used 75% acetone 25% water and let it sit over night and then took it to the car wash and 90% of the spray paint came off. Then I used pure acetone and went back over it to remove the rest and what I call the after residue then watered it down and then started my painting. After I painted it I lightly roughed it up and used the two part marine epoxy to add shine and harden it. He assured me he would never sell it but at some point would retire it and hang it on his wall in his KISS room. It turned out great and I see him from time to time on the river and people are always crowded around him taking pictures and videos of his kayak. He loves that.

    These videos are really useful. Since there has been a shortage of new boats, alot more people (myself included) are buying used.

    I'm considering painting my new Pungo, since kayak manufacturers seem to think their customers actually want to paddle a violent yellow and orange clown turd.
    Is there a reason manufacturers make them in such awful colors? Is a kayak that can't be seen from space too much to ask?

    • @gs6810
      @gs6810 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is hundreds of options that aren't clown colors. Why would you buy one you don't like? Don't spray paint it. It will look like you put a ghetto paint job on a clown turd. The paint will peel off on the first time you even move it. Maybe, maybe try clothing dye. It wont peel but might look like clown vomit instead of a clown turd.

      Haha, it seems like no matter what colors they make somebody doesn't like it. Can't win with everyone.

  • @mtslyh

    Angle grinder with high grit flap disks and VERY light pressure to make sure you are only removing paint and not plastic. Then get the crevices with the Dremel tool.

    Maybe combine the acetone with some 3M scouring pads on a DA sander? The DA might give your hands a break, and it may also help smoothe out the worn surface.

    • @HeadwatersKayak
      @HeadwatersKayak  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I might give that a try next. I'm primarily down to just the hard to get areas, so I might just go back to the felt bit on the Dremel and wrap it up!

    Probably a odd question to ask on a paint removal video but is there any good way to paint or hydro-dip or "wrap" (however those car wraps work) a kayak? I really like the Blade 120 but I want a purple kayak so badly xD (or a sort of purple+black mix like the default blue green mix)
    I could buy a Mustang 100 in purple/pink but the extra load capacity and 2 feet of keel on the blade speaks to me, for only a extra 50 dollars

    i used paint stripper on a Dominatrix and it didn't cause any damage

    • @HeadwatersKayak
      @HeadwatersKayak  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting. Paint stripper and acetone work pretty similarly, and given that the acetone didn't do anything here I'd be surprised if the paint stripper did. I think this was multiple layers of paint that were baked on in the sun over time. Extreme case it seems.

    • @ObsidianMoonstone
      @ObsidianMoonstone 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HeadwatersKayak I also had to take some paint pen off an Ace 4.7, worked like a champ with no scrubbing. I think its because the stripper sits on there like a gelatinous goo, the acetone evaporates off before it can do its thing.

    For anyone finding this video; use Lacquer thinner. Not Denatured Alcohol, or Acetone. Wear a respirator! Buy Green Scotch Brite pads in bulk, you'll go through a lot of them. Once you are done getting the patin off the finish will be pretty dull no matter how careful you are. You can hit the whole kayak with an orbital sander at low speed going from 300 grit - 3000 grit sand paper and finish with a buffing wheel to get it pretty decent looking (mind you don't hit the cast in graphics). Finish it off with some 303 protectant. It's a lot of work, but sometimes you find an expensive boat for cheap that someone else "bubbafied" that makes it worth the trouble.

    To chemically remove paint, use tolulene/paint thinner, mineral spirits, acetone, alcohol, or oils. Helps if you know what type of paint, because you have to match the chemistry. Oil based paints are the hardest to remove. The disc is a good idea, just use a bigger disc to increase torque. Pressure washer should've done it. My pressure washer will remove the clear coat and metallic paint on a car, if not used from a distance. I think you need a different tip, and stabilize the kayak so it doesn't rebound.

  • @jessicaolson3565

    Paint thinner/mineral spirits, gasoline, or turpentine. Obviously test it first to make sure that it doesn't melt the plastic, but those don't melt polyethylene (and it's probably a polyethylene kayak).
    I would not have bothered with alcohol as it won't dissolve almost any dried paints.

      I've heard that it does and that it doesn't. My most reliable source basically said it won't visibly damage it, but it causes to plastic to become more brittle. Wonder if there's a definitive source on chemicals interacting with pe.

    I'm surprised how tough some of it was bonding. I wonder if maybe because it was scratched and scuffed up before it gave it a better surface for paint to adhere to?
    Also...don't be that douche floating down the river and paint flakes are coming off your boat into the water cause you spray painted it!
