    GOOD VIDEO AND ADVISE! I watched this during my 4.5" long arm install on my wj last sunday. If anyone is going to do the same I suggest you take the pitman arm off first before you start to cut off the stock brackets that connect to your original short arms. My instructions said to cut the brackets off than go to the pitman arm. Well... once you cut the original brackets off to prep for the new ones. you are now at the point of no return i learned after words. My pitman arm was not happy and would not come off. We spent well over 4 hours of hell trying to get that damn thing off. After lots of cussing and moral boosting, we prevailed and won the battle and it finally came off. After 19 hours and running on fumes we finished the lift. I learned a lot, but i will never do another lift again. If you have never put a lift on and are about to. My advise to you is be READY FOR BATTLE!

    when taking the pitman arm off our 3500 dodge, we broke two pitman arm pullers lol we used a Hickey Bar on the end of a crescent wrench and had to physically walk around the front end pushing that bar to get the nut off. we also used a torch which did more work in a few seconds than we did tooling around for a half hour. amazing what a little heat will do

    So does the pitman arm have a key-way or do you need to chalk it first to get the original setting ?

      They usually have a different pattern of splines or some sort of alignment. They only go on one way for all of the ones I have done

    I am just now starting to replace the major steering component in my 09 Jeep JK. Most the work is easy to do. Basically you just have to remove a couple of nuts and bolts. The hardest part is to hammer, more hammer the various joints in order to remove the joints apart. Since I don't have a lift, there is little leverage to deliver a strong hammer blow when lying on the back and with limited arm movement. All the specialise tools can be rented from the local AutoZone.

    I have had the same trouble with that type of pitman arm puller. There is a cone style puller that will work much better. Also... Subscribed to the Rough Country channel.

    I can tell that the likely reason it got stuck is that the puller went uneven and the pitman got cockeyed coming off the splines. I suspect a tap back down along the viewers left side to straighten out the pitman on the splines would have done it.

    When do you know whether to replace the arm, or just the seal?

    • @stevo1977
      @stevo1977 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The arm is simply a block of metal if the arm is rusted and falling apart replace it, if the arm seems to be in ok shape, or the same shape as your steering links you shouldn't have a need to replace it. If your leak is coming from the shaft you'll have to replace the seal alone but removing the arm is the only way to replace the seal.
      Overall if the pitman arm looking like arse, replace it, if you pitman just got the runs replace the seal.

    Hey Matt! I just put a rough country Pitman arm drop all my 97 XJ 4.0 with a 4.5 lift, replaced all my tire rod ends and my drag link. I measured the old drag link from end to end and matched the new ones up. When I tried to install the new drag link into the Pitman arm it was about 1-2" to long. Do I keep the same length as my original drag link and tie rod or do I need to shorten them for the new Pitman drop arm?
    Thanks in advance,
    Nolen Hodges

    Most pitman pullers have a rounded top on the bolt. Which is meant to be struck with a hammer.

    • @Dic_Twist

    • @kd7cwg
      @kd7cwg 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I was told a long time ago, before all this internet was available, You tighten the puller down, strike the bolt with a hammer, tighten some more . It will come off. Don't follow that, the puller will probably break.

    • @Leoneidas
      @Leoneidas 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yup. Put a good amount of tension on it with the puller and then just a few sharp hits to break up the gunk and it pops right off. Same technique for a ball joint separator. The pullers are meant to apply a pulling force and the sharp blows to break the gunk holding it.

But my customers buy the kit they don't have a catalog manual that's why I miss some parts when I can be installed it. I hope you send me at least a catalog manual and I can install fropelly and less time of my job as a Mechanic. Thank you.

    what's the purpose of a pitman arm?

    • @uncleben03
      @uncleben03 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** A pitman arm connects to the steering box (turns with the steering wheel) to the drag link. The drag link is a rod that goes between the pitman arm down to the knuckle on your axle. Basically via the drag link, the pitman arm/steering box pushes or pulls your knuckles one way or the other to turn your front tires left or right.
