If you guys cant get it off that easy. Spray that thing down with some PB Blast, tighten the puller as much as you can, and start hitting the pitman arm where the puller is with a big hammer. Then tighten it some more if you can, and hit a couple more times. It should come off!
You missed telling everyone that if your reusing it (changing a steering box?) You should center steering and mark it somehow to be sure you get it back onto the new box in the same position. There's nothing like turning the wheel and will not make a turn but then it will turn to sharp the other way. You get to do it all over if you do this... All you guys with issues taking it off. Spray and let soak. Try again. might need some heat too.
Glad your came off easy cuz I bent two of those pitman arm removers. I also heated it up with my map gas torch and that didn't even work. Any other ideas?
The trouble I'm having is with the castellated nut on the other end. As I try to remove it the stud to which it is attached moves too so it won't unscrew. How do I get that nut off? I thought maybe an impact gun but there is a lot of stuff in the way.
Can i ask ...were did you get your pitman arm from ..i have been looking all over the net...and what year and make of your AUTO Are you working on..I have a sub fram and dont know what its off of.. THANK S
My front right tire is slanted, pulling to the right. I was told I need to replace my Idler and Pitman arms. 3 shops couldnt align my truck so i hope i just need to replace my arms.
@klowny1969 both are brand new parts. Hammer didn't work. I tried putting the old pitman arm on, just to see. It gets farther on. I'm going to try a press next. Thanks!
ok looks good, but can you be honest, what is the hardest part on removing the arm say when you are replacing the steering box? taking off arm looks somewhat easy, but putting it back on looks even harder, is there a took to lineup splines and force it back on etc? thanks. mechanics around here want to charge $7-800+ incl part, rediculous..
I found a good deal on a moog steering kit with tierods, idlerarm, and centerlink. I heard some one say that the moog center link for a thirdgen have incorrect geometry though. have you had an issue with moog center links?
I watched the video where you changed all the steering parts except the pitman arm. I think its this same thirdgen. looks like you changed the pitman arm after you changed all the other parts out. is there a reason you did the whole steering system first then changed the pitman arm afterwards? is there an alignment you are trying to keep?
Now how do i get it off the center link? Mine is very stubborn, also my new part will be installed downward through my center link. The old part similar to this video is installed upward through center link will that be fine?
That's fine..all cars a different..there are different ways to the off the center link..u can hammer it out..use a pickle fork..and sometimes u can fit a tie rod separator..dont forget to check out the description for a link to my shirts and subscribe
I have that exact pitman arm puller but I cant get it on because there isnt enough clearance between the pitman arm and gearbox. Any suggestions? Thanks
So far I've been to the shop 3 times. Changed out bushings, steering stabilizer, got it aligned and tires balanced and got an andjustable track bar. But it still does it. I'm so frustrated. Tires are in good condition. I got 3" spacer kit in front 1.5" kit rear.
0Rockstar7 if its a stock setup you shouldnt be adding additional stabilizer bars..sounds to me that ur dealing with an incompetent mechanic..should go under the car with a prybar and check everything..also check all the steering linkage, ball joints , recheck balance of tires and rotor runout..could also be driveshaft out of balance..alot to check..start with easiest first
after changing a pitman arm you can sometimes align it by marking it, but to have an alignement is the proper thing to do by a mechanics view point that knows what he was taught in school. So your choice, wear on inside or outside of tires will show shortly if out. spped vibrations as well as fast wearing of front end parts. When my truck just had it done, it was aligned. And yes it was altered a few turns, so it was not good after replacemenrt ,

You need to add some tension to the ball joint end..either with a pry bar or a jack

Does it help to use something like PB Blaster?
Yes that helps!
How the hell did you get it off so easily. I cant get mine off. I was using my impact running 175psi and all i did was brake the puller.
Allen McKinney u can use an air hammer to hit it on the side to loosen it up a little
Cut it half way off first with cutting wheel
Allen McKinney TH-cam always makes it looks easy. Lol
using 175 psi you must have forgotten to take off the NUT . LOL

What size wrench do I need to take the Pittman arm off
I believe 99 suburban uses 32mm. Fact check me though

would you need a wheel alignment after replacing the pitman arm?
John Smith no sir

Good short video. Doing this on my Pontiac now and this helped
You don’t need , the Pit man goes only one way. Is awesome you don’t have figure out , if it doesn’t fit , is not the right way
@John Smith unless you're changing tie rods and control arms with the same job.
Side Note: Try not using power tools. All I did was strip the threads on the tool lol
Not all pitman arms are easy access. 2015 the frame is running directly under it.
In that case you would have to remove it off the car..don't forget to subscribe 😉
