How to Plumb a Dishwasher Not Next to a Sink

  • ***DISCLAIMER*** This may not be an approved method for install in your local jurisdiction. There are risks to this style of installation. There is no air gap so if the sewer system gets backed up it could back up into the dishwasher. Also, although there is a built in system to stop sewer gases from getting into the dishwasher, some say this is NOT enough and the drain should be plumbed into the drainage system after a PVC P trap. In this episode of Down to the Frame we go over step by step how to plumb a dishwasher that is not next to a sink.

Please take this video down before you get someone sick or wipe out a town.Sewer gas can potentially seep back thru solenoid and wash with dishes. Who doesnt like the taste of waste with there steak and potatoes? The most concerning of the issues is no air gap you could potentially wipe out you neighborhood if your sewer backs up and your on city water. There is a reason for backflow protection look at all the deaths its caused in just America .You guys seem like good folks and i commend your efforts. This has no place on DIY videos. Its frankly unsafe to you and your family and potentially others.

Interesting! i’ve talked to a few plumbers about this installation and they were not majorly concerned about it. Certainly no concerns about wiping out a neighborhood. Sounds like you might have some experience! How long have you been a plumber for?

@@donlusby3283I don’t think many people have nearly as much expertise as you my friend! Great tips and great info. However, if I take the video down then people won’t see this information. So what I think might be a better option is to add a disclaimer in the video description. Stating that this method has serious risks and list the necessity for a P trap and air gap. not trying to spoil the fun and totally understand that your not Plumberz but that drain hook up needs a p-trap to prevent sewer gases from coming back in. Also that new branch ( Y ) you installed is not vented so when you run water down the drain that you teed off from the weight from the water will suck the dishwasher hose drain and or p trap dry. Also the new water shut off valve is not easily accesible for service or leaks.

Thank you for this video. I live in a 107 yr old house with no dishwasher. My options are to destroy cabinets next to the sink to get a dishwasher in, leaving an unregular sized small opening next to it... Or, install a dishwasher on the other side where there is no cabinetry, next to the fridge, just like your situation. The latter is the best option because I have access to electric, water, and drain on that side. It will be cheaper to do it this way because the cabinets won't have to be cut and reconstructed. You just gave me hope!

You connected a dishwasher and a refrigerator with the same supply line. So either you are sending hot water to the ice maker and potable water in the refrigerator or you are washing your dishes with cold water. Also, insulation in the basement was installed upside down. Vapor barrier goes towards the heated side.

Great question! No I believe I left in the portion of the video where I explain that the drain hose attached to the side of the dishwasher is the “P trap”. The flexible drain hose is looped in a way that traps water in it similar to a P trap. This, in theory, should prevent any sewer gases from backing up through that hose.

@@kyleculbertson8991 I have been running it they way it was installed in the video. I have not had any sewer gas smells. I am fairly confident that there won’t be.
