Thank you Jason! Yes, although now I see the Forest as a place that I like to retreat to (as do many others) it would not have been like that in the past at all - it was a hive of industry and activity. Thanks so much! Cheers, Paul
Now that's a different train Paul. Very nostalgic and historic. What a great bunch of men who keep this story alive. You did well to get this filmed with all the bumps in the road so to speak. MAybe that worker wasn't keen to be on film- rather than you were in a space you shouldn't have been. Great research and info sharing Paul. Thanks for the lovely views too. HAve a great day. 👍🇳🇱🙋♀🇳🇿
Thank you Anita! I do apologise for not having the time at the moment to catching up with one of your videos. I hope to do that soon. Lovely to hear from you. I was very fortunate to see this and film it too. Take care, Paul
What a fascinating place, they have not tried to prettify it & you get the feel of how hard it would have been to work there. How amazing these volunteers are. Thanks Paul.
Thank you Faith! Yes, I felt privileged to have been here to see this on the open day. It has a wonderful atmosphere, which I tried to convey in this little video. Thanks for watching. Take care, Paul
Really enjoyed a superb video of this marvellous reconstruction of this former gold mine. The volunteers have done a great job in re-laying track and salvaging some pretty unusual railway equipment. Hopefully, it will be possible to enter the mine at a later stage. It shows what can be done with knowledge, skill, energy and determination. I think your video nicely complements the one made by Ron Parkinson, which I also greatly enjoyed. Thank you.
Thank you Malcolm! Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, they have done a great job with relaying it all. I forgot to mention that the owner of the nearby Clearwell Caves was going to buy it and open it as a gold mine tourist attraction in the early 10s, but it never came to anything, so the Lea Bailey Trust took it over. Thanks so much! Take care, Paul
Thank you Roy! Glad you enjoyed it. I saw it on a fellow TH-camrs video, but it wasn't open then, so I have been following them on Facebook since. Take care, Paul
A treat for me- 2 videos to watch today. That mine was very unusual- in the Forest of Dean so dank and dark. It didn’t feel a pleasant place to work. Liked the way the points were changed by foot! And I liked the teddy bear mascot too! Would be wonderful if they found a deep vein of gold to pay them for all the hard work. I know that sounds fanciful but I recently saw someone re-opening a tin mine in Cornwall -apparently it will make a profit!
Thank you Diana! Yes, it is a very unusual mine, and also very unusual to see the track has been relayed by volunteers. The teddy bear got washed recently according to their Facebook page, but it doesn't seem to have a name! Yes, South Crofty (near where I used to live in Cornwall) has been on the cards to reopen for a while - the area is also rich in Lithium and Uranium too. I do believe that it is the one at South Crofty that is fully reopening with assistance from a Canadian mining company. Although there is gold in mine, it is in quite small quantities, and it doesn't make it commercially viable to extract as a business. Thanks so much! Paul.
Hi Paul, Brilliant, really enjoyed that!! After watching Ron's video I thought that the Lea Bailey Light Railway had ceased to function, great news to see parts of it being operated and extended as well. Well done for keeping tabs on it and going on the open day!! Your video was a great continuation of Ron's. I think he did two in total before finding the way down onto the trackbed and discovering the mine in the second one, the tunnel discovery further down the line was one of Ron's best ones and well worth watching. I thought the lighting was perfect, if it was poor it certainly didnt detract from the quality of the production. Really interesting to see the tranverser being used, these narrow gauge ones always seem to have a trick up their sleeves!! Great video, well done. All the best!!
Thank you David! Yes, I was so excited to see the transverser being used! Although they have a bigger version at Didcot Railway Centre, I have not seen it in action there, so this was joyous to see. Yes, Ron did do two videos in the area, and very good videos they were too, particularly the second one, as you say. My camera kept telling me it was going into high ISO (due to dark conditions), which can make the 'footage' grainy, but, for this sort of video, I think it adds to the atmosphere. Hope you are having a great week! Take care, Paul
@@westcountrywanderings I meant to mention well worth having a look at the photography that Patrick Dickinson did when investigating tunnels, particularly Megatron in Sheffiled
Thank you Michael! Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, the traversers here were amazing. The track is a little wonky, but it is still a work in progress. Thanks so much! Take care, Paul
Hello Paul - greetings from Poland. Fantastic video. A real treasure to film. The railway is from what I see, work in progress. Are you allowed into the mine on this one open day a year?
Hi Michael, Yes, as far as I am aware that is the only time that you are allowed in it, although they do some volunteer work on Sundays, so you could see work taking place then. It is very much a work in progress, and they don't have many volunteers, so inevitably progress (and funds) are slow. However, as you say, it is a real treasure to see, and I have not come across anything like it before. Thanks so much for watching! Take care, Paul
@@SouthWestSundays Thank you Louise! I think that the teddy bear is their mascot! It features on their website too! Well spotted! Thanks for a great comment! Paul.
Hi Paul, fascinating video, to think those guys are still working there. Like you I love forest and railways, I guess we are lucky to have the forest on our door step. Did I see the ghost of an old miner just beyond the wall on the left at 11.40 ? Thanks for the mention. Take care. Ron
Thank you Ron! Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, I was most impressed with what the volunteers are doing here. Thank you for introducing me to it through your excellent video. Take care too, Paul
Excellent video, Paul. A fascinating explore. Thanks for sharing. Cheers. Ron
Thanks so much Ron!
Hope you are keeping well - should be a good few days after this storm passes tomorrow.
Take care,

Thanks Paul, another great film, seems the forest of Dean was a very busy place!

What an interesting railway. I like that traverser! It doubles as a crossing! That trackwork reminds me of the wonky trackwork on my layout!
