    Been trying to work on the top end on mine for like 7 months now, but just don't have the time. This video got me inspired to do it now, haha. Greetings from BAJA, MX!

    It's an OEM Honda Piston. Just shipped it in the Wiseco box. That's why the original Honda box label was in there so you knew the part number.

    i looked through all your videos for chain and sprocket combination for brand and quality, xt650r 2000 for like the 1000, what'd you run down there. i got the stock gearing 14/48, i'm looking at rk's x or o ring, but there so many different ones. i don't remember having short life or troubled chains in the 70s, the only time i'd get a new chain was when i'd get a new bike. course it was lightweight div 1, riding a little hard, i think in 78 roeseller got #1x I got 2x and olgilvie got 3x, they had about 10 yrs on me, they rode the trailbike class when it was showcased, terry clark was my next door neighbor, mitch mayes lived about 6 miles away, hannah lived about 8miles, caselli lived about 1/10mile, ronnie nelson he was about 3 miles (who gave me the greatest tip of all time, about how to go around corners,) it was a good place to grow up. I know you're busy i 'll shut up.

      Honestly I waited until mine started needing frequent valve adjustments before I took it apart.

    I'm doing a cam now and I'm confused. You show the lobes facing down, and the shop manual doesn't clearly say (which blows my mind) but in some pictures the lobes are up, and when I took mine apart with the crank at top dead center the lobes were facing up. But i agree it only makes sense you'd want the lobes down and the valves closed. So Why were mine up when I took it off at top dead center? Was I on the wrong stroke? And how would I have known with the engine sealed up? Hope you see this and can help! Thank you for the great video.

    • @highlandcycles
      @highlandcycles  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question. When the lives are facing down you are on TDC compression and when they are facing up you are on TDC overlap. The way you tell when the motor is sealed you have to take the small valve covers off and watch the rockers. As you rotate the engine the intake valves will open (go down) and come back up. The next TDC is compression

  • @winstonsmith3685

    I think my XR has to come apart. It has always been extremely hard to start hot and cold. I had another one about 8 years ago and it was a one kick wonder. The weird thing is that it runs like an absolute raped ape once it does start. No smoke, no oil burn. No nothing. I rarely ride it because it’s such a PITA to start! I’ve addressed everything outside the engine.

    • @highlandcycles
      @highlandcycles  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I bet it’s the valves

    • @winstonsmith3685

      @@highlandcycles That’s my suspicion too. I’ve adjusted them multiple times with no change, so I’m assuming they need service. I’m a new sub. Keep the XR-R content coming. One of the best bikes ever made in my opinion (when they start like they should!).
