How Red Auerbach Stole Parish and McHale

  • While Red Auerbach is credited with the steal of the century by trading for both Robert Parish and Kevin McHale in the same deal, the origins of their dominance in the 80's goes back to a Lakers free agent signing in 1974.

    The way the Celtics got Bill Russell and Dennis Johnson were pretty clever "slight-of-hand" tricks by Red Auerbach, also. Especially all the stuff that had to fall into place for Bill Russell to join the Celtics.

    • @dmichael100
      @dmichael100 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      He wasn't a 3rd rounder. McHale was the 3rd pick in the first round. He became more as a pro than anyone could have imagined from his college career. He was one of the top big men of his college class but few could have guessed that this lanky guy would become probably the best low post player ever. At the time Joe Barry Carroll was the much bigger name. And don't forget Joe Barry scored 20-25pts a game for a good number of years. He just wasn't Kevin McHale over a career.

      lol I was reading this like "wtf are you talking about?" McHale is one of the Celtics highest draft picks of all time. He was #3 pick in 1980. Even Bird was drafted lower than that. The only players drafted higher than or the same as McHale for the Celtics were
      Chuck Share (1st pick 1950)
      Len Bias (2nd pick 1986)
      Jim Loscutoff (3rd pick 1955)
      Chauncey Billups (3rd pick 1997)
      Jaylen Brown (3rd pick 2016)
      Jayson Tatum (3rd pick 2017)

    Did he really say the number of "awful" picks was "astonishing" from Parishs' draft class? Really? Aside from the highlighted hall of famers there was some very good players in that draft. Lonnie Shelton, John Lucas, Larry Wright and Mitch Kupchak (champions on the Bullets), Ron Lee (great defensive player), Quinn Buckner, Earl Tatum. I guess we didn't see the same draft because those guys were all very good and you have drafts where you don't get anywhere near that many even serviceable players.

    Golden State had come to see Parish as a good but passionless player who didn't inspire his teammates or rise to the occasion in important games. It eventually came to view Carrol the same way. I've often wondered if this was a matter of circumstance. Minus the trade, would Parish have had a slightly disappointing career and Carrol become a Hall of Famer?

    Were the GSW winning during Parish's years there? I think he had said in an interview that he was happy to leave GSW for the Celtics. Also research what Red had said about Mchale. No, Auerbach added a hot prospect and the center of the 2nd worst team in the league, who happened to reach the HoF level later on. Why the Warriors did it? Well, having Parish on the team didn't do much for them and JB was rated very highly coming out of college, that is pretty much all there is to it.

      Please. Danny isn't one-tenth the GM Red was. Danny would've taken the #5 draft pick in '07 & done nothing else if ownership hadn't prodded him. After that big three run, he's made a lot of moves, most of which didn't work well together. Among several other questionable moves, he traded a starting center for a backup forward. When the team was finally a piece or two away from contending after last season, he blew it up completely.

    Anyone actually believe that 1980 Celtic trade was a legitimate steal must have a gullible pull me chain on them.
    There is no way a aging Bob MacAdoo was worth 2 first round picks. There is no legitimate reason for the warriors to trade Robert Parish who was worth a #1 pick for a 1 and 13 pick in the draft. The Celtics would get a 3rd pick also in that trade ! Obviously NBA is rigged allowing these trades to go through.
    NBA wanted two historic winning franchises to have the best players on each team ,Celtics/Lakers. This worked wonders for the NBA however the NBA is and still is corrupt!

    • @BBall0027
      @BBall0027 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Phares1225 You can't say the NBA is rigged because some GM's (regardless of sport) are just plain stupid and overvalue players. I think some GM's (not all, but some of the "lesser ones", for lack of a better phrase) just get into "shut up and take what you want" mode when offered the #1 pick in the draft, especially when "what they want" is a player with no All-Star appearances (which Parish was at the time). Conclusion: Dumb GM in Golden State. Anyone who thinks the league is rigged should either keep it to themselves or only say it to like-minded people and keep it away from the rest of us.

    • @dmichael100

      What is often forgotten about this, is the Robert Parish in Golden State was not the Robert Parish of Celtic lore. All anyone had seen by 1979 was a talented 7 footer who had made decent progress but didn't seem to have the heart to be dominating. He was something of a project and disappointment when Red Auerbach took the gamble. Amazingly, in 1979 many thought Robert Parish was...well...Joe Barry Carroll (Joe Barely Cares- Just Barely Carrolling were some of his nicknames.)
