SawMill House, designed by Archier Studio and located in Yackandandah, Australia, is an innovative and sustainable home completed in 2014. This unique dwelling utilizes large, reclaimed one-tonne concrete blocks, anchoring the house into its landscape and giving the facade a distinctive character. Originally a rustic, bohemian abode, it has been transformed through a collaborative design and build process, leveraging the client’s skills as a sculptor. The project features operable elements like mechanized glass walls and an openable roof, allowing for adaptability to various climatic and social conditions. The use of reclaimed concrete blocks not only grounds the building in its historical site but also addresses the issue of concrete waste, creating a patchwork of textures and colors on the exterior. This house exemplifies how sustainable materials and innovative design can come together to create a functional, adaptable, and aesthetically pleasing home.
