this episode reminds me of white bear. they make you feel bad for the criminal at first so you have to wonder at what point the punishment becomes a crime itself
I think the big difference between the two is White Bear poses a question of whether the lady being punished was innocent. Whereas this is more about perspective and plays on a big perspective shift.
This was one of my favourite episodes. A very simple premise and I like how the whole way through you feel bad for Kenny but then when it’s revealed what he was watching that sadness for him goes away very quickly. Very good writing and great acting.
The look on his face when looking at the children's coloring book and how he touches the crayons. It's so disturbing. Never caught that until seeing this reaction.
Yeah, I was hoping blind wave would maybe catch that since they started talking about the restaurant a little in the discussion, but I think Ultimately, that's not something people catch until a rewatch. But I agreee with you. Definitely in my top 3 favourite black mirror episodes
@@devinsingleton5242 i mean without the context it's just someone being nice to a kid. it would be weird to just see that interaction and then assume he's a pervert/pedophile.
The ending in a way trolls us the audience for even rooting for Kenny and it literally disgusts me in the best way possible because the whole point was to deceive you with the youngest looking actor. *Brilliantly performed!* 😂
Idk if the point was that sadism is cool as long as your victim has commited some awful crimes. I think the protagonist should be tried for watching CP and supporting this monstrous industry but assaulting them (even indirectly, by blackmailing another guy into doing it) just tells me that the blackmailer just wants to hurt people and not feel bad about it.
@@syabri2342 It's definitely a question of "does someone else doing terrible things make it okay to do terrible things to them? Or does that just make you a terrible person, too?" Most people will say on instinct, from the ick factor, "you do something bad, then it's fine to hurt you" -- it's how many people justify torture during wartime, and war itself -- but is that actually moral, or just a way we justify our own need for control and justice?
You feel so betrayed for feeling bad for someone like that when you realize, I like this episode because it's not really about technology. It's unsettling because you really don't know what goes on inside other people's minds.
Ha, except it is really about technology, albeit just modern technology. The whole plot falls apart without technology. The 'inside the mind' part of the episode is present in a lot of black mirror episodes.
@Dexedus I didn't say it's not about technology, it's just not as much of a focus point as most black mirror episodes and more psychological. Just find it refreshing seeing an episode where it's something that could happen today and not crazy scifi concepts.

I mean you can still feel bad. The guy did not choose to have an attraction to kids. His brain is just wired that way. I don't feel hatred for any pedophile UNLESS they can't control their urges and actually go after kids. No excuse at that point.
Ah, ours was called "Field Day" where I'm at in the US. Idk if it's called that elsewhere in the US but it was here. Kinda figured it was basically the same thing.
It's so interesting watching 30+ adults react to this. "It's just getting shown jerking off on camera." Putting the reveal of him being a pervert aside....depending on your age, having that broadcast to everyone you know could be life shattering. Lol
I feel like it's also because they're, idk "public figures". they put themselves out on the internet everyday talking about whatever they feel like. I feel like it largely eliminates the fear of being embarrassed. It makes sense that it wouldn't bother them as much as like someone who doesn't even have any pictures of themselves online suddenly being shown jerking off to the world.
I think it's just a matter of having lived through very humiliating circumstances, or having perspective of much worse things that can happen to you from having lived through them. I'm 31 and yeah obviously I really wouldn't want a clip of me like that posted on the internet, but if anyone started blackmailing me for it I'd just tell them to go ahead and move on with my life. The Next episode is my favorite. Also uss callister. First ep of season 4. Aaron Paul and Jesse plemons reunited after breaking bad. Aaron Paul has a small voice acting part at the end but none the less
Oh come on, Eric and Aaron! As old Star Wars guys, Kenny is Andor's "Rebel manifesto" guy. At least mention it. He's the same twitchy, somewhat insecure guy. Just once he plays a terrible person and once he's an idealist against a terrible empire.
This episode messed up my brains. It makes you go back and look at scenes differently. The scene when Kenny gives the kid his toy is especially sinister on a 2nd watch. I kinda wish there was an Easter egg follow-up on his charges and sentencing. I hope you react to the USS Callister episode. It's kind of a pallete cleanser
The armed robbery could be argued it was carried out under duress since he was threatened to do it and the murder his lawyer would argue was in self defence. After googling around (which makes me feel like i'm on some list now) for laws related to simply "viewing" such images; since the police will access his laptop it seems like it depends whether or not he has the images saved or if he just viewed a site. If he saved one or more images that's considered ""making" the image, as it causes a copy to exist which did not exist before." - however "making" and "possession" carry a maximum of 10 years.
It's the most stressful one for sure, and didn't see the twist coming at all. Great acting too, saw that kid after in End of the world and he's pretty good
Best thing about this series by far. At some point, I feel like almost every episode I have seen someone consider it their personal favorite. Mine will always be 15 million merits.
I think the true core of Black Mirror is about mercy more than technology. And it's just that technology is so cruel and merciless on its own, that when people treat it as something authoritative or natural then it allows for a cruel and merciless world. Episodes like this and White Bear really lay it bare by tricking you into considering the need for mercy for people who "don't deserve it", and the societal cost from removing that possibility. Like how the troll has complete control over these people specifically because they feel they have nowhere to turn and can't afford people finding out their secret, which isn't that different from being trapped in Playtest and surrounded by your worst nightmare every day.
Still my favorite episode. They make you want to support kenny until the twist and it makes you think about all the signs throughout the episodes later on.
Funny, just this week I got a spam e-mail threatening to leak footage like that (minus the kid stuff to cast a wider net). Wouldn't be surprised if the scammers got that idea from this episode. Pretty empty threat if you don't even have a webcam connected, though.
