    Very nice end result. I like the history of the aircraft and its missions as you build as well - great touch. Biggest disaster - building a small diorama, adding my carefully built Schwimmwagen, then pouring the resin for the water it was driving through. The resin went crazy, bubbling up and generating ridiculous amounts of heat. Luckily I was able to paint over it with brown to simulate dirty water.

    The Swordfish was a classic example of the RN Fleet Air Arm approach to the North Atlantic campaign. The armament was not a Lewis Gun but a Vickers K gun. Both guns appear very similar with their top mounted round magazine. I really enjoyed your voice over regarding the Bismarck while working on the model.

    I find that my modeling sessions are not so much about accomplishing a great build, as much as they are about fixing my screw-ups. After a month of steadily repairing, repainting and resanding, I am left with something that kind of resembles the model on the box top! Love this video, I also have a Swordfish in my stash that I haven’t managed to work up the courage to tackle, but after watching this episode I am filled with hope. It will be my first rigged biplane as well. Great job! Marty

    My modeling disaster was a model boat whose hull simply wouldn't glue together. If I applied pressure to any part of the boat, such as the when I was gluing some detail parts to the deck, the hull would split. I tried fixing it with Tamiya putty, but that didn't hold either. I didn't have any apoxy putty like mjlliput on hand at the time or I probably would have been able fix it that way, so I ended up just tossing it aside. I might go back to it one day but I've mostly been ignoring it.

    Excellent build, I think I may try to pick one of these up. Nasty fit or seams are always a mojo killer for me, especially when you know you're going to remove a tonne of detail in trying to sand it all.

    Here's my modeling disaster: As a kid I read "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" to TATTERS. I was -- am -- nuts about the B-25. When the Accurate Miniatures B-25B came out I was in heaven. I was nearly done with my nearly perfect Ruptured Duck when I ripped the decal of the nose art.
    To this day that model sits in my stash. And yes I know I could have asked for new decals. I actually bought the Italeri rerelease so I have new decals. I just can't face it. I don't know why. Maybe some day.

    I built Revell's 72nd scale "Memphis Belle" B-17. I built mine as Yee Olde Pub. In the build process, I ran into one hell of a snag where, the 2 halves of the fuselage were WAY off allong the top spine. I spent HOURS sanding internal assemblies to close the gap. By the time I called the ball and went with "looks good enough" I had a ton of hours into fine tuning and I STILL don't know what went wrong. I had to have done something wrong with the internal assemblies. Revell put together a beautifully detailed kit and I may have a go at it again. Thats my story for "the one that almost put me in the nuthouse". :)

    • @TheModelGuy
      @TheModelGuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also built that 1/72 Memphis Bell and it was horrible. I had so many warped pieces and bad fit it put me off Revell. I only touch their reboxed stuff.

    One that really killed my mojo for long time was the ICM Dornier 17Z. I spent hrs with Eduard PE in cockpit, masking canopies. I should have twigged something was up as the bulkheads wouldn't fit correctly and I had to trim one and fill the other. When I went to fit the wings together I found the upper and lower halves were warped as were the fuselage sides, hence the bulkheads not fitting. I tried and tried to straighten thinks out but in the end all I have left are two engines. They were the best part.

    Great build!
    Here's my modelling disaster: I had sprayed Revell acrylic gloss with a spray can on an Airfix 1/48 BF109 after applying all of the decals and had left it overnight. It felt dry and hardened so I went on to do a pin wash with oils. I was using cheap white spirit I got from a 1 euro store and everything seemed to be going well at first. But as soon as I was wiping away the oils all of the paint layers were suddenly peeling off completely and dissolving and it was even eating into some of the glued parts. Thankfully I always wear gloves when handling models. I put it down for a bit to see what would happen, and the model was totally destroyed by the stuff after a few hours. Peeling all over the place and strangely a lot of glued parts were letting go even though I used Tamiya extra thin and the like. So I tossed the model. Apparently, the white spirit I used was a bad batch that was super aggressive, even though it stated it was odourless. The fact that it wasn't odourless should have tipped me off.

    I am currently working on a 1:48 scale Hawker Hunter, which I am painting in the old Rhodesian (now Zimbabwe) camouflage scheme that consists of a brown base coat, and then green for the camo. Using Tamiya paints. I've found that the Flat Brown colour I've been using is too dark, so I've used Tamiya's Flat White to lighten it a little. Still playing around with it a little to get the exact shade I want, but at the start of the build, it was something I REALLY struggled with. When the project is complete, I plan on giving it to my Dad, as he worked on these aircraft during his compulsory military service in the Rhodesian Air Force during the Rhodesian (Bush)War.

    What I find is I spend at least half my time when modeling repairing my mistakes. AK Extreme metal paint is wonderful for illustrating the limitations of my modeling skills. So many little scratches. So much time to fix. Then it is fiddly bits and little parts, gear doors, stuff like that breaks off so easily and it always upsets me. I can look at kit parts and know instantly what will break where no matter how careful I am. I am forever trying to get better at protecting the kit mid build, you really need to protect it when ya walk away when you own cats. What has made me walk away from a kit for months and years at at time is my frustration with my poor modeling skills. Recently I forced myself to finish 2 that I had been wanting to see done and now they are finished. I am now trying to teach myself how to work as efficiently as possible and reduce the mistakes. Not an easy task, but I am trying.

    My current modelling blunder has to be when I was applying more layers of paint (as I'm brush modelling) and I took too long so they layer of paint beneath reactivates and I get this congealed mess of pigment that I need to try and flatten out, that mixed with a bodged attempt to pronounce the panel lines has really killed the mood for me to finish that model, a shame but I might try purchasing another model and completing that before going back

    My mojo was killed twice, quite recently, both times by using AK 3rd Gen varnish before chipping. I sealed both my South African Oliefant tank, as well as my Dutch YPR-795 a year later with the varnish. On the Oliefant I used hairspray, added the top coat and finally used water to do the chipping.
    On the YPR I wanted to do Salt chipping, to circumvent the hairspray. So I added water as well.
    Bad idea in both cases, as the varnish turned into a slimy film that separated from the model. But of course impossible to remove it from the hard to reach areas. Incase of the YPR the slimy varnish even "swallowed" the salt crystals, so now the tank sparkles.
    Both times the mojo was killed completely and I haven't touched either model since.

    Incident 1 (not too bad) - I accidentally used Micro Liquid Decal Film instead of Micro Set when applying some decals to a kit (it has nearly the same blue lettering on the bottle). Needless to say this made a mess & trashed the decals. I walked away from the kit until I decided to mask/paint in lieu of ordering new decals.
    Incident 2 (pretty bad) - Quite a few years ago I decided to try Alclad (polished aluminum) & it was recommended I use their gloss black base before applying the metallic paint. When I removed the cap to the black base the rubber stop got stuck in the bottle. Being a real newbie I hadn't seen this happen before and at first glance I thought hmmm - this looks like a squeezebottle.. so I turned it over to squeeze some into my airbrush cup. Well... the stopper shot out with all of the gloss black fluid covering my model, my model table, my airbrush, decal sheets, and countless tools & supplies. It got into places inside the airbrush that I couldn't clean & to this day I still find little splash marks on various objects in the room. I almost quit modeling for good that day -- but I kinda laugh when I think about it now. Would have been a priceless TH-cam video...

    My issue ended up with the model in the trash. I was building a Tamiya F1 Ferrari model. I had finished painting and decaling the body. I sprayed the body with Tamiya X-22 clear but it didn't look quite gloss enough. I then bought an aerosol of Humbrol enamel gloss varnish and did a test on some plastic and got a very wet look gloss. I then sprayed the model and to my horror the paint started to crinckle. If it had just been the paint I would have sanded it flat and started again but with the decals ruined as well I just binned the kit. The lesson is never trust paint compatibility, especially aerosols. Do a full test if you are not familiar with the paint you are using.

    Oof, that was a nasty spanner in the plastic works. Good workaround but ultimately, one of the reasons I don't build biplanes. As for my unfinished kits and disasters...
    HobbyBoss Mig 15 - Sanded through the air splitter trying to resolve a fit issue. Didn't walk away nor did the kit survive.
    Airfix TSR.2 1/48 - Mojo stall after a paint issue
    Airfix Dakota - Fought me all the way then lost a window
    Airfix Tucano - Mishap with superglue and noseweights. Easy fix but no acetone to hand.
    Arma Hurricane - Mojo died

    the usual ExtraThin fingerprints on very visible bits (leave it! don't try and wipe it off! just let it dry out for a day and carefully sand it out. Ask me how I know(=)
    By the way, the front cowling ring is actually the exhaust collector ring. The discolouring is because of the heating of the steel. So beware of instructions telling you to paint them copper !

    The actual problem with the Bismark's fire control was that they were calibrated for more modern, faster aircraft. Obviously they were accurate enough to take out the Prince of Whales quickly Enough.

    • @PeteCourtier

      FlyBaby I think you meant HMS Hood. The Prince of Wales was sunk by Japanese aircraft along with HMS Repulse.

      There is missing context for poor German AA gunnery against the Swordfish. The attack happened in low light ( evening getting on for night), and in bad weather ("driving rain, low cloud and a Force 9 gale"). Bismarck's light AA were not distributed with good arcs of fire, the heavy AA was not good for low level attacks, the rear directors were not stabilised. Swordfish were hit by light AA returning with damage but insufficient to bring them down.

    I got my hand on an Airfix Wellington from the 1970's. I thought I would do the challenge of putting it together; knowing full well it was a horrible compared to today's standards. What made me give up was trying to mask off the clear parts of the different windows to airbrush the spokes. I learned that clear parts from the 70's were something completely else, in a bad way, and gave up.

    Listening to the commentary it was mentioned that an American coastguard ship was involved in the action on the Bismarck, as the Americans didn't join the war until after December the 7th 1941 I fail to see how they could have been there at all. A list of ships involved is on Google and only mention British and Polish ships, not the Yanks!

    • @hadynthomas6197
      @hadynthomas6197 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Jonah Whale I stand by my statement:--- The American Coastguard was NOT involved in the sinking of the Bismarck or any action that led to the sinking. Another case of the Americans re-writing history to suit themselves. The Americans lay claim to the capture of a German U-boat, U-559 and its Enigma machine in the Mediterranean. This again did not involve the Americans it was LtCom Mark Thornton of HMS Petard and his crew who captured it. I believe the Americans made a film called "U-571" claiming they got the machine, this is, of course, a lie and again the Americans trying to big themselves up.

    • @hadynthomas6197
      @hadynthomas6197 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Jonah Whale Whilst I know the Americans had ships in the Atlantic and one may have seen the Bismarck but again my point is they took no active part in its sinking.
