Another element to consider is fitness. Grant looked great in anything he wore because he took care to stay fit and relatively trim throughout his life. A man with broad shoulders and a trim waistline will look better in a cheap suit than a fat guy in a tailored garment every time. Good grooming is also essential. Thanks for another informative video!

    • @Floorockous
      @Floorockous 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

To some extend you're right. But an ill fitted suit (or any ill fitted outfit for that matter) can make even the greatest physics look bad. Just like a well fitting suit can make a "big" guy look slimmer or a skinny guy look more muscular.

Grant was fit and trim, but man, they weren't much into weight training back then. Unless you were Steve Reeves and Grant was no Steve Reeves. Not impressive deltoid or latissimus Dorsi development by today's standards. I noticed the same thing about Jimmy Stewart.

I just heard that his wife, Diane Canon, said he never worked out/exercised. If he started to gain weight, he'd go back on salads till he slimed down again. He should have weight trained. His suits fit him like they were on a hanger.

Great video. The following is what I did. In my early 30s, I went to Brooks Bros. The company has a semi-custom shop. This means that whatever is on the rack can be made out of NY to FIT YOU. You can also choose better materials. I would choose two and sometimes three pair of pants. I would also chose functional button holes. You could also delete what you didn't want. I run a bit warmer than most people, so I would eliminate the vest and also save money. You don't constantly dry clean. You press and air! Every repair was done immediately. Shoes were from Church's shoes until it went out of business. Multiple pair of the same business shoes. Also shinned and in repair. I still have suits that are 30 years old and appear new. Quality and fit never go out of style.

My favorite bit of inspiration from Cary Grant's sense of style? Not following current fads - opting for style over fashion. Today's fashion, at least as far as men's fashion is concerned, is a bit too tight. I personally wear "slim" clothing, but most critics obsessed with current fashion seem to gravitate toward almost skin tight clothes, rather than just slim cuts. In my opinion, they look more like trapeze artists than gentlemen. I am confident that my choices are much closer in line with what Cary Grant would be wearing today than those current "experts" on today's men's fashion.

Great video. I've been a fan of Cary Grant, both as an actor and as a model of classically sophisticated style, since my youth (which was long ago). As with Grant, I have a tall, relatively slender build, and therefore, like Grant, I can often buy "off-the-rack" clothing that fits me very well. A key point, I think, is that Grant found ways to adapt elements of classic style to his individual physique and persona. I attempt to do the same.
As I lack Grant's full head of hair, I'm much more into hats than was he. I've a decent collection of fedoras and flat caps. Also, as I'm slightly less handsome and charismatic than was Grant, I tend toward bit bolder ties and accessories than did he. But, he is certainly an icon that influences my choices.
One amazing thing about the movie North by Northwest is that Grant wears one simple gray suit throughout most of the film and makes it look stylishly appropriate in a variety of very different scenes. I can think of several other mid-twenty century or contemporary film stars who fashion choices might be worth a video: Fred Astaire, Gary Cooper, George Clooney and Denzel Washington come immediately to mind.

Good one! Preston. Every fail is a step up, so don’t worry, everyone of us has much to learn.
By the way, you are a great host. Keep up the good work. Cheers 🥂 from Colombia

If this is a start of a new series - please do one about how to dress like Tom Ford, or rather how to dress like his (male) models.
I don't like the guy cause he seems arrogant, but he definitely has a very practical and modern style.

Excellent! My favorite movie with Cary Grant is "To Catch A Thief". I like his clothing and especially shoes in that movie, it's very romantic and Grace Kelly melted in his arms!:)

Excellent style dissection! He was always very fussy about his cuff length, at least at J. Press. Ps any chance to do a mens' neckerchief video? How do you think he tied the one at 11:20?

Nice job fellas. Love to see you stretch yourselves and do a video on the style of Steve McQueen. Baracuta Harrington, desert boots and jeans, to perfectly tailored suits. The King of Cool created a style for the latter half of the twentieth century.

Being a weight lifter for years i used to get athletic suits no longer available. MTM and than bespoke have made a world of difference. Better quality in all my clothes and fit are key.

Sadly, this kind of classic style in suits and so on is now impossible to find off the rack. Everything is loud design in tailored, slim fit, thin lapel, high gorge, skinny-low-rise-off the hip pants and tight jacket. It's depressing trying to shop for a suit.

One of Cary Grant's best films and performances was in Alfred Hitchcock's film "North by Northwest." His clothing was stylish, even today.

Great video! I have always enjoyed Cary Grant's films and believe he was a good looking guy. However, I have never considered him a style icon. But now your video has caused me to see him in a new light. Gene Kelly is a celebrity from that era that I also believe had a great sense of style as well.
