Clooney isn't a great actor, he's likeable but lightweight and limited, and he doesn't remotely have the range or body of work that Grant left. Cary Grant made it look easy, he could be light in a light part, effortless, but he was still a monumental screen presence and an astonishingly natural actor. Almost everyone else from the 30s, 40s, 50s seems dated now, stylistic, melodramatic, a bit clunky - still great but of their time. Grant could walk into any modern film and fit right in. He is literally timeless. He's certainly the greatest British movie actor of all time. We shall not see his like again.

@@susanb2015 If you have not already done so, watch his earliest movies, then progress to his last. He aged gracefully.
Search google for a photo of him at 62, holding his newborn daughter. Decide for yourself if he isn't handsome.

This is an era that was closing in time a golden era wrapped in all the joy of a new day. To look at cinema or TV today is a true shame to these actors who showed their generation their films in ambiance of days gone by along with the hope and promise they believed would evolve into the social media nightmare as of now. For what we should have become we as nation DID NOT evolve to accept with same character as the golden years of cinema. Collaborative medium privileged glorious years ahead he says what a beautiful vocabulary is not used today. Cary would not joke with Sinatra's innuendo as already in 1970 we were losing our national global character as a nation. What a shame I do not know how to make the youth of today see promise of tomorrow while they plug into their minds daily the garbage we all watch and follow never thinking of God anymore and God is Only One to Help US ALL!

I was introduced to a Cary Grant movie by my father back in the 80's when i was a teen. Been a fan ever since. Btw that movie was Arsenic and Old Lace and is still my favourite movie to this day. Cary deserved praise for his craft and acting skills long before. Rest in peace Mr Grant knowing you still live on and give joy to those that watch your movies and inspire others to emulate you (your grace and poise). You were one of a kind.

They don’t make men like Cary Grant anymore. He had it all-biography, looks, charm, mystery, humour, humility, ease, accent, charisma, business acumen, wealth success, long life, men and women by the score-nobody comes close. He also had one of the greatest career runs in show business, almost bookending the studio system. His cinematic archetype had such resonance that was being lampooned by Curtis in Some Like It Hot and referenced by Connery in Dr. No. I still think ‘North by Northwest’ is Hitchcock’s greatest film, due in no small part to Grant’s otherworldly performance. The fact that neither ever won a categorical, competitive Oscar shows how Hollywood was/is driven by politics and nepotism as much as anything.

As Michael Caine stated in his recent film tribute to this iconic actor on TCM, Cary Grant provided all actors of Caine's generation, i.e. Sean Connery, Warren Beatty, Peter O'Toole, someone to emulate and to strive to become. No one did it better or made it look easier in so many films. Sinatra was, in actuality, a good friend of Grant and they came to like each other after working together in a forgettable Stanley Kramer film in the mid 50s.

What a class act! Cary Grant was one of the best leading men ever! He could do it all, drama, comedy and he even did a bit of dancing. Wow! When you hear the phrase "suave and debonair" there isn't anyone you can think of today that could come close to defining those words like Cary Grant did. If only the "so-called" leading men today could have an ounce of what he had.....well we would have what a real "star" is supposed to be!

Such a gracious man. I liked how he gave credit to great script writers, who are often overlooked in the biz. There aren't many good writers today, which is why films today are such crap that even good actors can't salvage them. Too bad Frank Sinatra tried his best to humiliate Grant before leaving the stage. I could see Grant couldn't think of any way to respond to Sinatra's crude and humorless "repartee."

Cassie Katz The reason movies suck nowadays has nothing to do with bad writing. There are just as many wonderful scripts (actually probably more than ever) today as there ever were. They're just not getting made cause the only thing Hollywood is interested in making is superhero action blockbusters.
