I only did one cruise so far, and the second is on the way in 2 month. I must say what really helped me not to be disappointed, is simply to have looked at many many MANY youtube cruise channels like this one. It helped me understand better what was to come, and basically every aspect that Matt brings up here.
I chose a really recent ship the first time, and a older one for the second. I do know what to expect, I know what I will get free and what I will have to pay, and I know what could go wrong eventually.
So my advice : don't go on a cruise (or anywhere else) without doing some research first. We have the chance to access a huge amount of infos on the internet, so use it 🙂

Insurance is so important. You hope you never need it, but as someone who had 2 emergency visits to the ship’s infirmary on a cruise, I was sure glad to have it.

I would not say I have ever been disappointed, but for the time being I have sacrificed cruising Oasis class ships and some itineraries so I can frequently sail from a port that is about a 1 hour drive from home. As a result of sailing on the smaller ships, I have been able to budget for several cruises, albeit, some of the itineraries are repeats...but that allows me to do things at ports I was not able to do on a previous trip or remain on the ship on port days.
I have also been able to experience back to back cruises which is another dimension of cruising. So far I have done 20 consecutive days on board a ship and I have achieved Diamond level in 15 months. Now with Diamond status, cruising on the Oasis class ships should be a little more interesting! Many of these cruises I have done as a solo traveler, but I always meet very nice and interesting people. Being retired helps a lot as well...I never have any issues when I request my days off to go on a cruise! And I am, for the most part, Loyal to Royal! 😎😎😎😎

@RCCL My biggest disappointment is the entertainment quality (theater). From Broadway to almost a school play. Ok, not all of the shows. What's up with Coco Cay prices? I wish this as well, but it makes the price look more attractive for customer facing advertising, so I doubt it'll change.
A cruise posted for $289 for a 4-night sailing is going to look a lot more appealing than the same cruise for $550. It's almost dubious the way it works, but it gets us in, clicking around, excited for the cruise, then we negotiate with ourselves that the extra few hundred bucks "isn't so bad" 😂

I have NEVER been disappointed with a RCL cruise. I done 8 different ships, the bigger the better. The ports of call is always a secondary consideration. The ship is THE draw - so much to absorb. Water slides and the pool bars allow me to meet lots of new 'friends.' 😃

Im about to do my 2nd cruise, a week long. Then first we did only 3 nights because we were not sure. And we actually experienced a sense of grief departing because it was like "Eden". Everyone could get the food and entertainment that fit them. I could be my fat self reading a book on a pool chair and my husband could take his stick self to the rock wall and physically challenging activities. He even injured himself a few times with scrapes and a bruised and jammed toe and was thrilled to have "battle scars".
This longer cruise he booked a huge hike and climbing excursion while i check out the markets and culture. We will meet up in the evening and share stories and pictures.

The biggest benefit of a travel agent, particularly with Royal is their ability to keep track of prices for you. When prices drop, they can save you a lot of money because they have better aggregators and it's easier for them to keep tabs on it. If you know more than them, then that just allows you to be hyper specific about what you want and have them do the leg work for you.

The thing about my last cruise that left a bitter taste in my mouth, was the number of excursions that were cancelled, and we were only told about once we were on board. It left us with only one or two options left, and we had to pay up front for those, while the company took 45 days to refund us on the cancelled ones.
One excursion itinerary was changed, without is being informed until we were 2 hours into the bus trip. A town on that excursion that we were really looking forward to was dropped. Annoyingly, there was a different excursion with that same town. Had I known, I would have swapped.
With all of the above, the excursion staff didn't seem to care. They just kept saying that its up to us to check the itinerary ourselves. But we did! We did it months in advance. How are we supposed to know they're going to change things last minute? And why do they not inform us, but wait till its too late?
Now, I know some passengers don't care about the destinations, but we do. That's why we chose that ship and that itinerary. In some ways, the whole cruise feels like a waste of time and money because the very things we planned so well, we missed out on, purely because the cruise company doesn't bother to inform us in a timely manner.

I have been cruising for only 8 years, but I have gone on almost 40 cruises in that time period. I have cruised on 4 different cruise lines and have actually enjoyed every one of those cruises. I will admit, that my first cruise I was surprised my the charges, fees, prices, and procedures which are mostly just first time cruiser mistakes. I have had issues on these cruises where things went wrong or wasn't happy with an outcome on a issue, BUT I never let those issues ruin my cruise, nor will I let that happen, but of course, unless I'm on a cruise like the Costa Concordia for instance, which was tragic. If people are letting their failure to do research of any kind, then it is totally on them, not the cruise line. My "worst" cruise was on a NCL ship on a 11 day cruise last January where I found that the toilet did not work in my cabin. After 4 days of contacting guest services and getting no where, I then talked to hotel manager, and to be honest wasn't helpful either. I was eventually moved to a mini suite for the remainder of cruise which was a major improvement, not because of the cabin, but I had a cabin steward who was amazing versus the other one, who was lazy to say the least. I wasn't looking for a free cruise, but some OBC for the inconvenience, which they did give me, but with all nonsense I went through for 5 days, I still wasn't dissappointed with cruise, cause I still had a great time and I wasn't going to let that ruin my cruise.

I am researching a little less than a year on my Greek Isles cruise next early summer (despite already doing some of it (2 of the same ports ) with my parents on a different cruise line) Its amazing how the pre-cruise package pricing jumps up and down daily and how its so easy to do a litle research to find ths must do's in port to plan our perfect port day. I always do DIY port tour plans unless the cruise offering is better which is rare .I love this pre-cruise time to get the best deals and make the best time-based descisions in ports and pre-cruise stay. its fun when you have almost a year to go as every day is new info. Research is half the fun of the vacatioin itself for me personally , I've missed it since my last cruise was 2 decades ago as of next sailing. Can't wait to see the 20 year changes in cruising with RCCL. Almost emerald class after this one .

I want to add another reason people come away from their cruise unhappy... Not being flexible with your plans. Sometimes crew on a ship have to make the decision to cancel or change ports for a variety of reasons one big one is weather and sea conditions coming into port. Excursions also can get cancelled or the reservation time gets changed on you. For example on our last cruise we booked a morning snorkeling excursion at one port which got change to an afternoon time because it happened to be Good Friday and the port area and shops were only gonna be open the first part of the day closing down at noon. So if they hadn't changed our excursion time we would have missed out on exploring the port area (of which was our first time being to this particular port) and shopping. It all worked out even though the seas were rougher in the afternoon for snorkeling but we got to get in the water, see some fishies and have some beers! :)

BUT, we went with my Mother in Law who is in a wheel chair and it would take 15-40 minutes to get on an elevator because they were always packed! People were not willing to get off and walk 1-2 flights to make room for someone who physically cannot! It was so frustrating and honestly heart breaking. I’m not saying everyone who can needs to always take the stairs. But if the elevator is full and you see someone who needs to take the elevator, get off and take the stairs! Or wait for another elevator!

You keep saying that My Time Dining will be put where ever there is open tables, but last August they wanted me in the same section each time. I show up at 8:00, they tell me to have a seat on the bench and they'll seat me, and 45 minutes later I'm still sitting there. I was always put in that section, reservation time be damned, open tables be damned.
I mean, I'm patient, but the dining room closed at 9:00 a.m. I'm hungry, and still waiting.

Agree with everything here, especially about managing expectations. I also find that a lot of people make blanket judgements about a cruise line based on their experience of one ship. Cruising on Wonder or Harmony is different than cruising on Anthem or Odyssey which is different from cruising on Navigator or Mariner, for example. So many varied experiences available within one cruise line. In addition, food, service, etc., can vary between ships so I always try to not give up on an entire line just because of a poor experience on one ship.

Do not purchase travel insurance with the cruise line, purchase it independently. I typically get travel insurance with the same or even better benefits than what the cruise ship is offering for half or a third of the price of the cruise line. It's very easy to do a simple internet search to find reputable insurance providers. The biggest difference between cruise insurance and other types of travel insurance is emergency medical evacuation. Make sure you have at least $250,000 in coverage because if you have some kind of medical event and have to be air-lifted from the ship or an island, most traditional travel insurance will not cover that. Do a little bit of research and you'll save hundreds, possibly thousands of dollars.

#MSC price the suites since you can get VIP service allowing you to avoid the crowds, and access events.
#Norwegian you can get very affordable cabins, so consider splurging on Specialty dining to avoid the mediocre food options in the buffet and MDR.

Went on a first time cruise ship trip and instead of enjoying the experience,I end up becoming a lifelong hero for the cruise ship by reporting a note problem before it happens, as first time passenger I just had to see everything I could including the morgue where they kept dead bodies to the brig cells ( passengers kept locked up and turn to police at next port of call. Even the medical Center where dr and RN work on 24/7 and infirmary where it’s like a hospital on boat. And the event I had ran into medical emergency 🚨 ( father was check by Dr ) and rush to the hospital ( Mexico City Hospital and was 1 one off the ship and 1 one back on the ship 🚢. The issue I found was the they left the door 🚪 opened before sailing and nobody noticed it until until I saw it and asked the doorman to verify it and he said or god security breach issues ( 🚨 was triggered by the security and safety of the ship was caught in time. That same day while I was nosing around ( eating all day, and getting lose ) the captain 👨‍✈️ had personal dropped by and put a cruise ship winery ( expensive type ) for the hero treatment I did for the cruise ship ( in engine room ) by the time I was home ,family members were on their feet saying ( wow ,you did a 👏🏻 saving the cruise ship 1 time out. ) u got a wine bottle for your efficiency deed. 6 month late that same ship caught fire 🔥in the engine room same place where happened before ( tv report says earlier this year this issue was resolved by a passenger for hero issue . That I ship got fixed up late on

we've been disappointed over the years and each time it's because of something different. That said, we still love cruising. None of those disappointments were deal breakers. Well. Actually, that's not true. My kids no longer are willing to cruise on DCL. They're adults and were disappointed on 3 consecutive cruises when disney didn't live up to its very high standard of theater entertainment. Given how expensive DCL is and that theater entertainment is such a large part of that high cost, it became a dealbreaker for us. As for Royal, so far so good. We were a bit disappointed last summer (on Rhapsody), but i think it had to do with covid after effects (not enough crew). But this summer, on the very same ship, we had a spectacular time. There seemed to be a lot more crew on board than there had been in 2022, so that may be the reason.
