Gapanbulu Yunupingu plays Djaṯpaŋarri
Gapanbulu Yunupingu is a respected and ceremonial yiḏaki (didgeridoo) player of Gumatj clan of Yolŋu people from northeast Arnhem land, NT in Australia. He was trained by the late Mr Munuŋgurr to become a ceremonial yiḏaki player with some other boys from a very early age. He was one of the yiḏaki players of the indigenous Australian band "Yothu Yindi". Some might remember when he played yiḏaki as a member of the band at the closing ceremony of the Sydney Olympic in 2000.
Filmed in 2006. Here he plays a very popular song among Yolŋu people called Djaṯpaŋarri (informal song and dance) with yiḏaki.
This is a 5 beat song and its basic phrase is "dhirrḻ(1/5) ḻo", "dhirrḻ (2/5) ḻo", "dith-dhu(3/5) ḻo" or "ḏith-dhurrŋ(3/5) ḻo" in faster tempo," dhirrḻ (4/5)", "dhurrŋ dhurrŋ(5/5) ḏith-dhu" in his language (Yolŋu matha) pronunciation. Take a beat with the finger click or biḻma (clap sticks) at the beginning of each "dhirrḻ". So, it clicks 3 times (at 1/5, 2/5 and 4/5) in 5 beat (the numbers indicate the beat).
Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge and skills, Gapanbulu.
