      Take a look at ‘Sadhak Sanjivani’ by Sri Ramsukhdas ji Maharaj (published by Gita Press); it’s widely regarded amongst the sadhaka-s and mahatma-s of various sampradaya-s as one of the best commentaries on Gita.

    I was an atheist since i was 18 year old (or maybe even earlier). However, over the years i have become an agnostic. I think atheists are as "assuming" as believers are. Atheists cannot prove that creation has happened randomly since something cannot happen out of nothing just like believers cannot explain who created the creator. Under the circumstances, the only rational view is to be agnostic. But yes i agree, Gita is one of the most profound book i have read.

    Ami has the right approach and her insight that Bhagwat Gita is personal depends on the person's personality, stage in life, age etc is very true. It depends on what one is seeking. Gita is a so valuable because it has the ability to reach every human who seeks to answer: How do I make the right decisions to live my life in the best possible way, and be at peace with myself. Conflicts arise for everyone internal as well as external but being able to resolve these in a just /dharma upholding manner is what Gita reveals. You can be an atheist or agnostic or monotheist or what ever label of your choice, lessons in the Gita are universal and not time bound!

    When it comes to Rig Veda, no one can understand it without reading commentaries because the knowledge is extremely metaphoric and hidden. It prima facie looks like just normal hymns but Sayanacharya's commentary was mind blowing. A normal hymn was turned into explanation of how water cycle worked and rain happened. There is a whole hymn on antidote of poison and which bird was used to remove poison from scorpian or snake bite. Also Swarg word is not in Rig Veda, its Divah Loka, so probably there was a concept of home of devas but not heaven.

      @@varunkhugshal9049 The book is English translation of Rig Veda by H.H. Wilson with commentary of Sayanacharya. If you wanna read Rig Veda , don't read it without commentary explaining every hymn. Otherwise it would be useless as it would look like you are reading Rishis asking for things from Gods but it's not. Every hymn has a hidden and a very deep meaning. Agastya Maitravaruni properly explains antidote of poison but when you will read it looks like he is rebuking a mongoose. Only after reading commentary I understood what he actually meant. That's why Vedas couldn't be read without a Guru.

      @BhagyalaxmiKumari-vb4ub ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@varunkhugshal9049 one super fun fact is that Rig Veda's first hymn is of Madhuchenda Vaishwamitra who in Valmiki Ramayana is called eldest son of Vishwamitra Gadhi (Menaka's husband and composer of Gayathri Mantra). Gayatri Mantra is the last hymn he composed. Vishwamitra cursed his sons including Madhuchenda for them not supporting his decision to sacrifice themselves in place of Sunahshepa. Vishwamitra is the one who tried to stop human sacrifice and saved life of Sunahshepa Ajigartha and adopted him and gave him the name Devarata Vaishwamitra.

    One of the best commentaries on Geeta is bhavarth Deepika or dnyaneshwari as it is famously known, narrated by 13 century maharashtrian saint Dnyaneshwar. In his commentary he gives day to day examples from our life (although from his times but most of which are observable even today). To read it in its original form is a literary and philosophical delight and it has become a major part of Maharashtrian social, spiritual and cultural life.

    There is an interesting sculpture on one of the walls of the shiv temple at Toke village (Pravara sangam) in Mharashtra. The sculpture depicts five pandavas which you can identify with their physique and other attributes. Interestingly among them, only yudhisthira wears holy thread (yadnyopavit) which has been interpreted as an attempt of the artist to show he only was the one among five who did know the dharma well. This temple was probably built during the Yadav dynasty and was renovated around the mid 18th century by Marathas.

    Bhagawat Gita has both Sakara (Vaishnava) and Nirakar ( Shaivite) concept. Iskcon teaches both but follows Sakara concept. Srimad Bhagavatam 1.2.11 says "Param Sayta" has three manifestations-- Brahm, Bhagawan, Paramatma. Without a bonafide Guru, Guru deeksha you can't understand much. Without following Yama (no meat eating, no intoxication, no illicit sex, no gambling) and Without following niyama (scriptural study, Guru deeksha (association of devotees), deity worship, Hari nama japa ) --- progress is difficult. Many worldly scholars don't follow this yama and niyama-- hence understanding this divine concept is difficult.

    One of the major takeaways I find is that there is no one way to 'know' the truth (brahma). A 'drop' in the ocean cannot know everything about the ocean in which it exists. Similarly, every drop in the ocean only has a partial knowledge of the ocean, potentially in a different light. Think of the truth as a statue in the middle, surrounded by artists painting it from all directions. Everyone believes he has captured the statue in his art, but they are all different from one another and even when combined together the statue is something more than the sum of all the arts.

    Good podcast bro. The only word that kept bugging was the expression "Hindu" as a "religion". My limited knowledge tells me that this word Hindu was associated with the physical location of the people who lived with this philosophy. Moreover, if I'm not wrong, it's actually the "Sanatana Dharma" which was followed, again, that's a philosophy of way of living or understanding the universe "Nirguna Brahamana" & "Saguna Brahamana" and so on, of which Bhagwat Gita is one of the scriptures.
    So, in this whole concept, where does "religion" come 🤔
    Sorry, if it sounds a lame question because according to me, Hinduism is not a religion, a way of life.
    Is that wrong?

    Modern minds mostly have Protestant bias where they try to shun away from commentaries and interpretation. We don’t like to have intermediataries. We believe we somehow have the capabilities to directly reach our Ishtha deva or moksha.
    At the end of the day we will have to be admit ourselves that far greater and more intelligent people have pondered over Geeta. Thus following traditional sampraday and their commentaries is more appropriate way to understand Geeta.

      Ah yes I see, personally I also don’t agree with that. But given the general sincerity to follow a traditional approach I guess it is fine given amount of external threats to sanatana dharma.
      Most insidious type of interpretation are actually done by the likes of Devdutt Patnaik and other vested groups which will erode the society from within.

      I understand where you are coming from but most of these so-called gurus have hurt our scriptures tremendously. Geeta is primarily a warriors book. It is not for the modern bhakti margis who portray Geeta as some supreme aadhyatmik book. Geeta makes you brave, not cowardly.

    These people are confused about sthitpragnata as well. Bhagwan says that stjitpragnata is a symptom of a gnaani. Whose those actions are 'expectation-less" and who does not feel any negative/positive emotions regardless of outcome of their actions are Sthitpragna. It does not mean 'khush' aur 'Santusht'
    Best way to understand Geeta is to try and translate the exact saunskrut shloks without adding anything else.

      Both Monier and Williams give content and contented as English equivalents of स्थितप्रज्ञ. So from that point of view, simplifying स्थितप्रज्ञ to संतुष्ट is not wrong. Besides, if you are स्थितप्रज्ञ, you are automatically content as you have already gotten rid of everything that can make someone unhappy. Remeber that according to "Hindu" philosophy default emotional state of human beings is आनंद.‌ And then we fall from that state due to our attachments.
      On the other hand, if you object to simplifying स्थितप्रज्ञ to संतुष्ट it would imply that ज्ञानी individuals are असंतुष्ट. Then why would anyone want to be a ज्ञानी to begin with.

    Also, purpose of Geeta is not self improvement, its not an self-help book, its a guide to way of life for the people, who are on spiritual path. People are free to say anything but Geeta was, is and will remain a spiritual book, you can not bring it to the level of self-help type of book.

    I feel before you get into the great scripture like our Bhagwad Geeta,we should follow as advised by Adi.Start with VISHNU SAHASRANAMA ,IT WILL GIVE ONE INITIATION ON THE PATH. THEN COMES ATMA BODH, ETC. ANYBODY WHO CONSIDER HIMSELF AN ATHEIST IS LIVING ALSO IN ILLUSION.

  • @RanjivKurup
    @RanjivKurup ปีที่แล้ว

    One problem. Since there is no concept of a "god" or "theos" (it is dyaus misinterpreted) in Hindu traditions, why have a discussion around the binary of theism-atheism? Darsana are perspectives on the nature of reality, one doesnt belong to one or the other, you merely take inspiration from them to guide your quest. Guna in 9.13 is "propensity", the sum total of the qualities with which we are born, the ones we acquire, and the qualifications, knowledge and experience we gain thru life. It is an evolving predisposition. And in 9.32, it is striyo-vaishya a street-walker, not women and merchants; shudra are those who are not scholars of any tradition, hence ignorant of the nature of divinity, though their talent and dedication leads them there (bhakti). Varna, after all, is the way we are wired to seek divine perfection.

    Aim of Bhagawat gita is " brahm gigyasa "-- ie going back to Vaikuntha/brahm jyoti. Ask the saints (self realised soul.) If you can't answer ( till you are enabled) without a Guru-- you can neverunderstand. There is no difference of opinion its Nirakar vs Sakara. Thats all.
