What a great overview. I always presumed that Durer was the first one to paint this, so the part about Van Eyck was an eye-opener. My favorite in the video were the works by Rembrandt. And I also love the work Triple Self-Portrait by Norman Rockwell.
As mentioned, Dürer was the one who really turned the self-portraits into a new genre, as there is always some uncertainty about the works of Van Eyck. And Rockwell's work is great. I love how he pays homage to the masters of this genre by including little self portraits of Dürer, Picasso, Rembrandt, and Van Gogh. I did not include this work in the overview as it is still protected by copyright, which is the reason I ended the overview at the beginning of the 20th century.
@@AmuzeArt The abundance and variety of portraits from Van Gogh and Kahlo makes them both very interesting. A personal favourite might however be Norman Rockwells self portrait for capturing the process very well. One gets a humorous feeling thinking about the many moments that an artisit will have looking at oneself, and probably making quite a few faces in the process.
Yes, I totally agree that Rockwell made a brilliant work there, showing it from different angels, paying homage to his predecessors, and adding the humor. I did not include it in the overview as the work is still protected by copyright..
You are right, some of the best portraits are more than just a likeness of the sitter, they look into the person's soul and create something more lasting than just a simple portrait picture. All paintings by Rembrandt sell for a lot these days! Two small portraits by him sold $14 million last week.
