Having been learning Norwegian, this was weird for just a moment. I wasnt paying attention when I clicked on the video. I didnt see the description or notice any indication that it wasnt in English. “Von Sydow was reported to be either an agnostic or an atheist. In 2012, he told Charlie Rose in an interview that Ingmar Bergman had told him he would contact him after death to show him that there was a life after death. When Rose asked von Sydow if he had heard from Bergman, he replied that he had, but chose not to elaborate further on the exact meaning of this statement. In the same interview, he described himself as a doubter in his youth, but stated this doubt was gone, and indicated he came to agree with Bergman's belief in the afterlife.” Quite interesting I must say.
But he did not elaborate. The "life" he may be referring to might just be what we are doing now - remembering him after he is gone. There are two deaths; the first is when we physically die, and the second is the last time someone speaks our name.
@@DATo_DATonian not really. The afterlife is a popular concept , and apparently Bergman believed in it. so when referring to a " life" after death , Ingmar Bergman definitely talked about the afterlife.

Though the film’s theme, the silence of God and the horror of death if there is no afterlife, is an essentially religious one, The Seventh Seal doesn’t really deal with religion or God as such, but with the place of God and religion in the human heart and human society. 1:11 Source: Decent Films

I just learned that my parents went to a string of Bergman films in the early period of their courtship. I like Bergman a lot, but isn't it INSANE to risk a relationship on a series of films that make a lot of people want to fling themselves off the nearest cliff? Mom: "Yeah.. well he's really cute and kinda sweet... but he took me to this dark movie about Death..... I don't know.... maybe I'll give Freddie Football a try...." Though I guess if you can make it through Bergman, you can make it through most of the troubles in life......
The more I watch this scene over again and studied the movie it becomes clear how well it encapsulates how human beings deal with their own mortality and that eventually death always wins. The only thing you can do is smile and say not today.
Like Death came for the last of the 3 brothers in the Deathly Hallows of Harry Potter and they went together as good friends. I hope to meet death that way, with a smile and dignity.

V.I.F.....Max...🇸🇪
Oh! I didn't know he was Swedish. It seemed like he always had German roles.
@@yngvebalmsteen9174 This is a Swedish film, though. They are speaking Swedish.
Having been learning Norwegian, this was weird for just a moment. I wasnt paying attention when I clicked on the video. I didnt see the description or notice any indication that it wasnt in English. I was just watching, and then...
- "Hvem er du?"
- "Jeg er døden."
It wasnt until after the first two sentences that I realized it wasnt English and that I still knew what was being said lol Im glad the Norwegian is sticking, and is also helping me with Swedish and Danish. Granted, the spelling in Swedish is different, but the meaning is the same.
Takk for video :D
Swedish and Norwegian is close relatives.
-Vem är du?`
-Jag är döden.
This reminds me of a scene in "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey". I wondered why death looked so plain in that movie, but it now seems like it was an homage to this movie scene. Nice! I'm glad you shared this.
What's Really funny is that in both movies death cheats

"DAMN RIGHT!!!"
In the same interview, he described himself as a doubter in his youth, but stated this doubt was gone, and indicated he came to agree with Bergman's belief in the afterlife.”
Quite interesting I must say.
But he did not elaborate. The "life" he may be referring to might just be what we are doing now - remembering him after he is gone. There are two deaths; the first is when we physically die, and the second is the last time someone speaks our name.
This itself sounds like something out of a Bergman picture.
Not really
Khalid AlAli thank you for sharing that I didn’t know. 👏🏾👏🏾
@@DATo_DATonian not really. The afterlife is a popular concept , and apparently Bergman believed in it. so when referring to a " life" after death , Ingmar Bergman definitely talked about the afterlife.

Death even has the right voice. Calm and collected knowing he runs the show of life. This film is a masterpiece. Thanks for posting.
“I want to confess as best I can, but my heart is void. The void is a mirror. I see my face and feel loathing and horror. My indifference to men has shut me out. I live now in a world of ghosts, a prisoner in my dreams.”
"ive already walked by your side for quite some time" - death
The lighting in this scene is beautiful. A high key lighting on an exterior scene.
The details in this one scene is just amazing; the beach scenery, the silence, the pauses, the tableau of the knight and Death playing chess, the close-ups, and the aesthetics of the black-and-white footage (even though it was probably done for budget reasons). Even the Swedish language has a certain charm to it
Nothing can be done in colour, that can not be done better in black and white.
it wasnt for budget reasons it was made in ‘57 tf
@SC O'Dubhlaoch it is a stylistic choice
SC O'Dubhlaoch i simply meant at the time black and white was conventional u pedantist
@@OrnamentValleyFilms Technically, movies made in '57 _were_ in B&W for budget or stylistic reasons. Technicolor existed far before that (The Wizard of Oz was 1939), and Eastmancolor came out in '50, which replaced its predecessor's 3-strip process with a single strip, only requiring one reel of film.
Never heard or seen this but this scene alone makes me want to watch it
Ever since 2 months ago(Corona crisis), I've been getting random recommendations of Chess videos and finally I have found the perfect video for chess.
Behind him stands a man in black. His face is very pale and he keeps his
hands hidden in the wide folds of his cloak.
KNIGHT
Who are you?
DEATH
I am Death.
KNIGHT
Have you come for me?
DEATH
I have been walking by your side for a long
time.
KNIGHT
That I know.
DEATH
Are you prepared?
KNIGHT
My body is frightened, but I am not.
DEATH
Well, there is no shame in that.
The KNIGHT has risen to his feet. He shivers. DEATH opens his cloak to place
it around the KNIGHT'S shoulders.
KNIGHT
Wait a moment.
DEATH
That's what they all say. I grant no reprieves.
KNIGHT
You play chess, don't you?
A gleam of interest kindles in DEATH'S eyes.
DEATH
How did you know that?
KNIGHT
I have seen it in paintings and heard it sung
in ballads.
DEATH
Yes, in fact I'm quite a good chess player.
KNIGHT
But you can't be better than I am.
The KNIGHT rummages in the big black bag which he keeps beside him and takes
out a small chessboard. He places it carefully on the ground and begins
setting up the pieces.
DEATH
Why do you want to play chess with me?
KNIGHT
I have my reasons.
DEATH
That is your privilege.
KNIGHT
The condition is that I may live as long as I
hold out against you. If I win, you will
release me. Is it agreed?
The KNIGHT holds out his two fists to DEATH, who smiles at him suddenly.
DEATH points to one of the KNIGHT'S hands; it contains a black pawn.
KNIGHT
You drew black!
DEATH
Very appropriate. Don't you think so?
The KNIGHT and DEATH bend over the chessboard. After a moment of hesitation,
Antonius Block opens with his king's pawn. DEATH moves, also using his king's
pawn.
A most appropriate scene now that Max von Sydow finally lost the final game against death. rest in piece you wonderful man and all those amazing roles you played throughout the years. Great love from sweden
I've always admired the timbre and cadence of Max von Sydow's voice. Thank God that many fine examples of the man's work were left to us.
I've never even heard of this movie, but after watching that short clip I want more!
It's one of the most famous movies in movie history. Ingmar Bergman.
_"Death gives meaning to our lives. It gives importance and value to time. Time would become meaningless if there were too much of it."_
-Ray Kurzweil
Though the film’s theme, the silence of God and the horror of death if there is no afterlife, is an essentially religious one, The Seventh Seal doesn’t really deal with religion or God as such, but with the place of God and religion in the human heart and human society. 1:11

@@Gurci28 only problem with that alleged quote is that Jesus is omniscient, so he wouldn't have to return, to discover what has transpired before his bodily return; he already knows everything. Nor would he "vomit", as if he were suddenly surprised at some people's actions during his absence; he foretold such behavior, during his first coming.
Thank you for everything, Mr Von Sydow. Now you may rest well.
I don't know.... maybe I'll give Freddie Football a try...."
It gives me the willies to think of how improbable it was that they would stay together and have me later. Though I guess if you can make it through Bergman, you can make it through most of the troubles in life......
I suppose that is true, haha
hahaha...good story for a short. I might steal it
Basically it's about that we are so unaccustomed to feel our feelings, be present in what we do. Therefore, the true art many times be a shock.
"courtship"
"the willies"

wut? I mean Bergman is great and all, but I don't think his films risk relationships.
One of the greatest films ever made, in my opinion. So ahead of its time...
The more I watch this scene over again and studied the movie it becomes clear how well it encapsulates how human beings deal with their own mortality and that eventually death always wins. The only thing you can do is smile and say not today.
You might be a king or a little street sweeper but sooner or later you dance with the reaper...
At last he has come for him, this time without the possibility to postpone with chess. RIP Max von Sydow.
V.I.F ...Max...
Like Death came for the last of the 3 brothers in the Deathly Hallows of Harry Potter and they went together as good friends. I hope to meet death that way, with a smile and dignity.
@Hoàng Nguyên Yes, that is what I thought when I remembered the 3rd brother and his cloak of invisibility. Glad I could help. Wish they would make more movies like the 7th Seal, better yet, have more actors like Max.
That awkward moment when you realize Death is a homie... He so chill, he gonna play chess and rob you of your life. I'd like to think there would be some kind of embodiment or an entity waiting for us all as our time comes. I'd like to quote a line from a cheesy movie if I may,
"Death is a gentleman too. He makes good losers of us all. I understand death. Men have always taken it too seriously. Life is more terrifying and more mysterious." - Proteus IV (Demon Seed) 1977
Old cinema and computer games are absolutely amazing because their technological limitation brought out the most intriguing writing.

Max von Sydow was a young guy in The Seventh Seal only 27 years old. He looks and has the aura of an older man . For a small country, we have some excellent actors and actresses.

Silly, there're plenty of contemporary movies with good plot and good acting. And since when was CGI a bad thing? Honestly, silly comment!
I prefer movies without CGI, bad actors, plots and scripts, and Gore. Not many today.

@@yandhi5016 I do, just not many contemporary, I prefer those that are 60 - 80 years old, the movie dealt with plot and acting, now a days some acting mostly CGI, I was born when the movies had lots of acting but little to no special effects.
Isaac Allerton the fact that you keep bringing cgi up, proves that you don’t know many modern movies, neither care enough to look just a little beyond marvel, f&f and transformers
I had a dream about death once and he was very kind.. it was during the time I lived in a high ceiling apartment, where you had to climb up to the sleeping mattres on some ladder.. so in my dream I was waking up at morning time, and heard some rustling noises from bellow.. I've looked down from above and saw death busy cleaning around the apartment.. so I asked if he came for me, and he said yes, but first we have to make the apartment tidy before we "go".. and that was it, lol
