      The fact that our politicians have shipped most of our manufacturing overseas or have brought them to leave the states because of their high taxes... To reverse this, there will need to be tax cuts and incentives to build and manufacture here, as well as there will be growing pains in the beginning to go back to making our own stuff, but it can be done

      That’s not a monopoly. Monopolies apply to businesses or enterprises. Not workers.

    • @jamesstrain9283
      @jamesstrain9283 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Labor unions were in fact sued for anticompetitive practices shortly after the Sherman Antitrust Act was passed in 1890, but the US Supreme Court ruled that unions were exempt from the act. Later antitrust laws ("trust" in this context means "monopoly") specifically exempted unions (and other organizations, including Major League Baseball) from their provisions. Furthermore, a number of federal laws and court decisions in the early-to-mid-20th century strengthened unions' monopoly power over labor markets, including the Clayton Act, the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), and the Norris-La Guardia Act. The NLRA is the most important of these in the context of your question. It requires the Nat'l Labor Relations Board (or some labor commission) to certify an "exclusive bargaining agent" (a union) to represent a given "bargaining unit" (a group of workers who share a common employer and trade). This provision grants a monopoly privilege to the union that is duly certified to represent workers for any given employer. It's why, if you work for a port employer in, say, New York, you can't just start a new union to compete against the ILA there. The ILA is the legally certified bargaining agent and it possesses the exclusive right to represent dock workers there (unless and until it does something so corrupt that it gets decertified).
      The NLRA also requires employers to engage in collective bargaining with the certified union, and this empowers the union to win compensation and benefit settlements that are often far above competitive free-market rates. Also, union-friendly states force workers to join the certified union if one exists, which further strengthens unions' monopoly power. Right-to-work laws attenuate union power to some extent, as they give workers the freedom not to join the union. This makes it harder for unions to organize in right to work states, although some unions do exist, particularly with municipal employers like public schools and ports. Texas is a right to work state, but its schools and ports are unionized.
      The ILA, like other big unions, got itself certified as the bargaining agent for many different employers in many different states through a variety of tactics. Have those tactics included illegal activities like extortion, bribery, protection racketeering, assault and battery, election fraud, or other corrupt interactions with local politicians, port commissioners and workers? Well, numerous union officials have been accused of such tactics over the last 100 years and there have been a number of criminal convictions, but I certainly don't have any evidence that any ILA official has ever committed such crimes. Anyone, however, is free to watch the recent videos of Harold Daggett promising to cripple the American people with ILA's labor strike, and then form their own opinion of his character and tactics. Again, I have no evidence at all that he has ever crossed the line and done anything illegal, and I am certainly not suggesting that he has.

      No you are wrong. I’m not a union guy and I’m mostly on team red but these guys are doing what every American should be doing. Holding out for better conditions. Are you telling me that working class people should bear the brunt of inflation while corps continue to push their earning and profit up? No way in hll does that make sense. Conditions are dwindling for most Americans and you are suggesting they accept that.

      I picked up an entire strip loin for $6.30 /lb thanks to my 10% senior discount. That works out to a $4.70/lb savings for ribeye steaks vs the $11/lb at Sam's Club. nYou can save money if you are willing to put a little work in. You can buy a whole Top sirloin and cut it up for steaks, stew/chili meat and ground beef and pay around $4.50 a pound.

Our team has been working with suppliers for weeks to serve Texans. Most products are not impacted by this strike. Our stores are receiving shipments and are in a strong position that allows our Partners to continue to restock shelves throughout the day."
