    Good job for us that you didn't listen to Sandra! That welding looks pretty good (well at least the 1st one did) :-) NOW for up & down and back & forth ... can't wait! Well done, Tim!

    That looks like some fun!! And very useful too. When I had a little property many years ago, I'd call that type of home-made manufacturing "Recreational Engineering", and it always gave me a big thrill when something worked.

    Tim. Please note. Used, or had used, many of these (known there as C4's) in Southeast Asia, particularly Vietnam.
    One is almost as keen on health and safety rules as the average Vietnamese. However, even the Viets consider a crude, sheet metal blade guard to be ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL.
    When a wider (also advised for dimensional accuracy. ) blade lets go, the results can be truly horrifying, wherever you're standing.
    I'm sure you're aware of this, but sometimes a wee nudge can help us stubborn old farts back on the rails.

    I watch a lot of builds, and honestly this one had my jaw on the floor trying to figure out who would need such a thing. Then you mentioned logs, and it snapped into place. I'm a little surprised you didn't clean it up a bit, as it would slide much better. This thing is cool, however I can't help but think there's a reason you don't see many saws running on inflated rubber tires..... Cool and scary as hell.

    Nice job! If you'd cut the wheels off the other end of Mike's car you could have driven the wheel by way of the drive shaft and even used his engine. He probably would have noticed their absence a bit sooner though. Also, after watching the blade spin down, those brakes you cut off might have been handy to have. One last suggestion, if you release the blade drive before you try to start the engine, it will be much easier for the engine to start.

    • @WayOutWestx2
      @WayOutWestx2  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right on all 3 counts, Gary. But the engine/gearbox/clutch/fuel-tank/radiator collection would be just too big, I think. The belt slipped off a couple of times - I think that's why we started it under tension (not sure why the blade was too). It started anyway. I need to put a belt guide on for when it's slack. Yes, should have kept one set of brakes on..

    The best wheels to use are the "Donut spares". They inflate to 90 pounds and so you can put a lot more tension in the bands. They are available from junk yards for a few bucks apiece. They get one for every junker that comes in and they never wear out on the car. Therefore there are hundreds that they can't sell so they go cheap.

    Hi Tim
    Enjoyed this very much indeed... but how can Sandra ever think no one will be interested?! After all, what would you do with the results of the horse logging if you didn't have a means of milling the timber?
    Is there a particular reason why you don't have a tractor? I've run an old one on a shoestring for many years, and it has been endlessly useful, both for traction and as a static power source. I have made, renovated and modified many tools for it. All that said, I love your clever innovations to make the most of human and animal power, especially the narrow gauge rails.
    Good luck, and thanks for sharing all this wonderful material.
    Chris

    • @WayOutWestx2
      @WayOutWestx2  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Chris. For many years there was so little money around I couldn't have afforded even a broken one. And the fields are so wet for most of the year that a tractor would just have made soup. But I could really use the engine and the pto from one!

    Claims he isn't a very good welder, then proceeds to lay down some pretty decent joints with a TIG (notoriously finicky unless you've finesse)......
    I should think the tire/wheel combo add a fair bit of inertia to the overall blade momentum, so hitting knots shouldn't be a problem. You could also put a sticky rubber wrap on the tire where the belt runs to give it a bit more traction.
    That said, I hope you've got the tires pumped up quite high so hitting a knot doesn't cause the tire to briefly deform and cause the blade to jump. For the same reason, you might want to get a pulley with extended (higher?) walls so the belt can't jump out the channel and run amok.
    Nice little shadetree build, even if the health&safety people wouldn't approve.

    I really like the simple way you made the transmission! I think a centrifugal clutch would be good to have on the engine, but the pulley needs to be larger than on the clutches I've seen. So maybe weld on a bigger pulley to get the meter per second you need. The size of the car wheel does not influence on band speed if I 'm not mistaken?
