Elvis actually fought his manager and record company to record this song. He wanted to draw attention to the issues that society was facing especially for black kids growing up in the ghettos and the lack of opportunities and support for them. Elvis understood the struggle and had friends as well as many members of his team that were black and he witnessed their struggles despite their success in their professions through their work with him. Nice reaction! Elvis was no stranger to poverty. He grew up extremely poor. Once he was rich and famous, he gave away most of his money to friends, family and charities. He bought homes for people, gave away cars to total stangers. All for the joy of giving, just making people happy. A very unselfish man. After you’ve reacted to “If I can dream”, I recommend “suspicious minds”, live in 1970
This song changed the trajectory of my life. I first heard it in 1969 in my teens, growing up in Germany. The fate of this li'l boy (back then I had no context at all, but somehow assumed he was black) hit me so deep, I came over from Germany after finishing high school to volunteer on St. Louis' Northside in a "ghetto" community center (with a pretty patronizing attitude, I must admit). It set me on the path of returning 25 years later to the "angry young man", back in the day on parole for CCW, who had escaped being gunned down (could have been the police, by the way, because the young man in the song is running!) who in the meantime had seen so many of his friends and family members die he suffered from PTSS (I call it: Permanent Traumatic Stress Syndrome) that he self-medicated with crack cocaine, got eventually caught when his 'hood was slated (and wiped clean) for gentrification and prematurely died in prison. And still the vicious circle continues because mainstream society does not give a f*ck.

At the time of his death, Presley's net worth was around $4.9 million, which by today's standards is equal to $19.6 million. When he died, Presley's ex-wife Priscilla Presley took control of his estate, the entirety of which was left to her and Elvis Presley's only child, Lisa Marie Presley. A few years after his death, Lisa Marie’s mother and the rocker’s ex-wife, Priscilla Presley, took control of the estate. By 1989, she grew it to more than $75 million, with approximately $15 million in gross income annually. When Lisa Marie turned 25 years old and inherited the estate in 1994, it was worth an estimated $100 million. Today, Elvis Presley’s net worth has risen to an estimated $300 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth. Forbes cited his 2016 earnings at $27 million, which is certainly impressive, but nearly half his 2015 payday, which totaled $55 million.
@real american I don't know if "Connie Whittington" lives near Tupelo or not. But there are people who live in the same area he grew up in. That is just a fact. And the part of Tupelo Elvis grew up in was then dirt poor area where poor whites and blacks lived in the same proximity of that part of town. Her comment was accurate on that count. No I am not from there, but I have driven thru all those areas of MS going to SEC football games in nearby Starkville, MS, Oxford, MS and nearby Tuscaloosa, AL all within 1 to 1.5 hours from Tupelo.
I just saw this today. I'm 60 and know the song. Elvis is king for a reason. But it is so sad to think about how the truth to this song was not only before long before it was written but very sadly is truth to this very day. I pray when day can happen where colors of skin are an after thought when getting to know and respect each other. A time when I can see black Americans not have to cry or relate to a song like this. I believe elvis had the same belief. Come on america let's make it happen!!!.posted by a white man that has seen enough death, and racial decension. Peace out man! And love thy neighbor.
The man who wrote this song wrote it because as a kid one of his good friends was black. He did not understand why his friend could not live next door to him, in a white neighborhood. He saw what the cycle of poverty did. So he wrote a song for Elvis, who was raised dirt poor. He talks about it in an interview. I am 49. when I was about 5 I found some OLD 45's (vinyl record) my mom had. This was one of them. I fell in love with this song. I didn't really understand it. I knew it was a sad song about someone dying. I fell in love with his voice and to this day this is one of my favorite songs of all time. Sadly it is just as relevant today as it was in the 50s.
He understood abject poverty, sometimes not having a meal to eat. This song was ahead of its time and unfortunately still is happening today. Stay safe in this horrific time.
As others have mentioned, as great as this performance is, you must listen to the studio recording to get the incredible feelings and emotion of this amazing song. My heart goes out to anyone that has given a thumbs down to this, they must be in a real bad place.
I can't take anything from this song outside of deep empathy and a man that exposed true in real life in the 60's . I'm literally blown away about him speaking out on a world wide level for unfortunate people . How would he be so empathetic to this ? He felt for others . Period
“If I Can Dream” Elvis did it in memory of Dr King and Bobby Kennedy. He wanted to say something at the end of his 1968 tv special. He sat down with some songwriters and they came up with it. Keep em coming brother👍🏻
Hi Elvis Grew Up In Mississippi. Dirt Poor. Lived in a 2 Room Shack that His Father Built. And Borrowed The Money For The Lumber. Sang in Black Churches. He Never Forgot His Roots. Didn’t See Color. He Loved Everyone. The Song IN THE GHETTO. People even His Manager Did Want Him to Sing The Song. But He Did. He Lived It. Check out The Original Studio Recording. Slower. Loved The Guitar Riff. Also another Song. IF I CAN DREAM. From His 1968. Comeback Special. Thanks.
I’m white as a marshmallow, but this song always brings tears. Devastatingly beautiful song. Hard to believe this was released 1969 an nothing has changed for the poor.
Elvis grew up very poor, lived in a 2 room house with no electricity, no plumbing, no running water n not much food. He worked hard to become the best ent of all time. His income was around a billion dollars which he gave most to many charitys n people in need. He never forgot his roots. This man sang rock n roll, ballads n Gospel songs. And he read the Bible everyday of his life. His life was not perfect but no one's life is. He died a lonely man with many health issues such as glaucoma which is very painful, hypertension, twisted mega colon which puts ALOT of strain on his weak heart. He had an enlarged heart n clogged arteries. I could write a book about him but there are at least 40 books written over the years n some filled with lies. I saw him in Hawaii concert 3rd row seat n boy he was handsome. RIP my friend. Suspicious Minds, Polk Salad Annie, Patch It Up, I'll Remember You, n some gospel songs Take My Hand Precious Lord, Who Am I, Bridge Over Troubled Water. These are only a few of around 400 songs he sang
Loved the way you just listened. Didn’t pause it 5 times. Elvis could tell a story with a song Like nobody’s business. Canada. The. M J. Of the 50. 60. 70.
Elvis grew up dirt poor in black n'hoods in Tupelo , knew what it what like. Elvis just saw people , not in colours. He saw so loving & didn't judge ! No he sings with the angels 😇
Great reaction, thanks a lot! Elvis devinitely knew what he was singing about! A lot of his songs were really deep! But he also had a great sense of humor, check out " Suspicious Minds " live in Vegas 1970. Unbelievable perfomance! He was not only the King of Rock'n'Roll, he was the King of music. He could sing everything: Rock, Rhythm and Blues, Country and most of all Gospel!
What I love most about this is that the song neither blames the mother nor the son, but blames the general "people". The opposite of modern politics really it sometimes feels.
Elvis grew up extremely poor. This is why he sang so passionately about this issue. Also if you haven't already, check out his song "If I Can Dream" ...tribute to MLK..It's powerful, too.
Great reaction video. Even Kanye West and Jay Z understand, Elvis Presley had more talent in his little toe than the 2 of them combined! Just as Either of them...they will say 'yes!'
Elvis was born dirt poor down south. He loved his mama so much that after she died he was never the same. 💞✌
Now it’s your turn to teach everyone around you! Never let this music die.
And that is why he’s the KING! I think you would like American Trilogy by Elvis!
James Brown cried openly at Elvis' Funeral. Two incredible men who were incredibly close.

Connie Whittington I grew up in booneville !! Wow
The backup singers give me chills
Elvis. Is. The. King.
Gave me goosebumps every time I hear this song......loved watching you! He would be so honored 🙌
Elvis grew up singing Gospel in Church, with the local Black community .... Hence the Soul in his voice and music.
This song was passed around..no one would touch it. Elvis wanted it. He knew this needed to be said.
He understood abject poverty, sometimes not having a meal to eat. This song was ahead of its time and unfortunately still is happening today. Stay safe in this horrific time.
Elvis didnt have a racist bone in his body .and was a very generous person ..and the king of rock an roll..thankyou. Very much😁
As others have mentioned, as great as this performance is, you must listen to the studio recording to get the incredible feelings and emotion of this amazing song. My heart goes out to anyone that has given a thumbs down to this, they must be in a real bad place.
beautiful song the king forever
I love the warm tone of his voice. Amazing singer.
Elvis was the MAN! He could sing anything.
Mac Davis wrote this song, but Elvis liked it enough to sing it. ♥️
His people told him not to sing it...but Elvis don't forget his roots.
Thanks.
If I can dream gives me the feels every time.
I’m white as a marshmallow, but this song always brings tears. Devastatingly beautiful song. Hard to believe this was released 1969 an nothing has changed for the poor.
Elvis showing his gospel roots
Have never heard a more real, sadder song in my life
Every time I hear this song it makes me emotional
Sounds like you had an awesome mom! God bless you. 💜
This song come out in 1969 and it’s now 2020 and it’s still happening in the ghetto 51 years later.
The sad fact that this was recorded in 1969 and Is still relevant today.
Elvis forever king
This is one of the reasons that he is the king!
I lived in Chicago in the 1960’s and today that is one of my favorite songs he sang..
Loved the way you just listened. Didn’t pause it 5 times. Elvis could tell a story with a song Like nobody’s business. Canada. The. M J. Of the 50. 60. 70.
The issue still remains today and nothing has changed!!
Elvis grew up dirt poor in black n'hoods in Tupelo , knew what it what like. Elvis just saw people , not in colours. He saw so loving & didn't judge ! No he sings with the angels 😇
Thank you for playing Elvis Presley love It 🤩😍🤩😍
Great reaction, thanks a lot!
He could sing everything:
Rock, Rhythm and Blues, Country and most of all Gospel!
I pray for change God !!! Elvis stood against racism and had an African American nanny whom he loved and was close to so hated racism
This song was written by Mac Davis, a country singer.
I remember Mac Davis. He was one of my favorites back in the day; very talented. I had forgotten he wrote this.
Yes, he did! Great writer!
Mac said in an interview that Elvis added the final "And his mumma cried".
Mac Davis was a great song writer and singer.
This is one of Elvis' songs that makes me cry every time I hear it. The others are If I Can Dream and You Gave Me a Mountain.
Same here
This song makes me cry everytime i hear it.
Great reaction video.
Even Kanye West and Jay Z understand, Elvis Presley had more talent in his little toe than the 2 of them combined! Just as Either of them...they will say 'yes!'
This is awesome that not just you but many of your generation are discovering Elvis. His memory will live on because of you guys! Cheers! 👍
Yes Elvis was the man If I can dream suspicious minds you gave me a mountain all great songs he had such talent and he was gorgeous in his prime 😍😚💖👍👍
