Nordic gold, I still have a long ways to go before I try that. congrats by the way, they turned out awesome. I just got done doing my first brass melt myself
@@Metalstacker been welding for years but always with some one else welder. real pain in the butt. want to get my own. I have dozens of things to do and make, and being able to do them at home would be real nice.
I was afraid that when putting in the zinc from the start all would be cooked away during the melt of the copper. I think there is less zinc evaporated when adding it in at the very last bit.
Would this recipe work well with lost wax casting? Also would tin or pewter work well with small lost wax casting such as a tooth cap? Thanks for the vid man👊🏼
Hi there, I think this metal should work wonderfully with lost wax casting, especially when placed in a vacuum setup. Tin and Pewter I would not know, to be honoust I never did lost wax casting myself, only watched it :)
So I first saw this reaction with the zinc on another channel and they said it "boils away". I never got an answer so I'll ask it here too,, if it boils away, what is the point in adding it? Is there really zinc in nordic gold??
Hello there and thanks for asking! Yeah there is 5% zinc in nordic gold. As copper melts at 1083°C and Zinc had a boiling point of 907°C it will surely evaporate a bit of the zinc. I think the formula of nordic gold (89% copper, 5% aluminium, 5% zinc and 1% tin) takes into account that some zinc will boil off. (Nordic gold is a widely used alloy in real coin minters) I do not think all zinc boils off, what would be the benefit of adding it? When all metals are mixed, the melting point of the alloy gets much lower, so a future melt had almost no zinc boiling off as the temperature is just below zinc boiling point. Whenever you make a new batch of nordic gold, the copper must melt so you will always have some zinc burning off. Hope this helps out a bit. I will also ask a guy on Instagram who studies metallurgics, maybe he knows a better answer :)
That's really good work! Nice job! What happened with the zinc? Why did it go up in smoke like that? That looked a bit scary, to be honest. Anyway....really nice bars!!!!
Thanks! As Zinc has a much lower melting point than copper, it will react violently with the molten copper. I had done this a couple of times before, looks kinds scary, but with good PPE it is just fun :)
@@Metalstacker I appreciate your reply! I'm very anxious to make some Nordic Gold. Its so pretty but I'm also nervous because of that violent reaction. However, I do have leather boots, long leather apron, respirator, face shield, thick leather gloves and sleeves. I'm pretty confident that I have suitable PPE because I'm very serious about safety. I did my first ever melt last week. It was just some scrap aluminum but I'm happy with how it all went.
@@mountaindewdude76 Sounds like a proper kit for safety, good job mate! Good to hear you melted some metal. If you do not want a violent reaction (and toxic fumes) you could first try aluminium bronze, or bronzal. It is made of 11-9% aluminium and 89-91% copper by weight. It will look kinda like nordic gold. Make sure to stir it well after putting in the aluminium.
@@Metalstacker I appreciate that input! I've been following bigstackd, VOG, IngotJoe, ArtbyAdrock, and swdweeb for many months. I've been following your channel for a few weeks now. All of the above sources have been encouraging, informative, and entertaining.
When I melt copper or aluminium I will not wear a mask as there is little to no toxic fumes. You want to wear a respirator when zinc or lead is involved as they give off toxic fumes. Not sure about tin, but from what I saw, tin casters normally do not wear masks.
Not yet, that will defenitely change the metal into something else! There are some recipes out there with lead or bismuth. Might try to make an alloy one day with lead 🔥🔥🔥
Very cool thanks for sharing I will be posting soon should keep a eye out for my video unfortunately taken me longer than I expected to post coming soon but
Great looking bars, like you I love the whole process of making Nordic Gold. 👏👏
It looks like a lovely metal, I sure need to test it with a sand cast :)
Very cool. looks like real gold.
Thanks! I wish that was gold :)
Nordic gold, I still have a long ways to go before I try that. congrats by the way, they turned out awesome.
I just got done doing my first brass melt myself
Great to hear buddy! If you have all the ingredients, just go for it, make sure to wear proper PPE as the reaction is quiet violent :)
Nordic Gold is awesome, one of my favorites. I need to make more of it myself, getting low. I need to make some bronze too.
I made it especially for a coming project as you might know ;) Really curious how it will cast in sand :)
@@Metalstacker It usually works awesome, I don't have many failures when I use Nordic Gold
The welding is looking good
Thanks a lot! And I am getting better and better :) All the new possibilities that open up now are so cool :)

Now you got me wanting to make some of that N. Gold. I need some tin and zinc I guess I need to head over to eBay. Really nice job MetalScraper. 👍
Thanks! I was lacking tin, luckily I got it from a subscriber :)
@@Metalstacker a good source of tin is plumbing solder. Check in with the oldest small hardware store you can find.
Another great video my friend.
Thanks a lot buddy!
Hi, great video! May I ask, if is there a reason for putting tin and zinc in the end? Asking because of the zinc flash🤔

@@Metalstacker great, thank you!

Thanks :)
Im just learning about Nordic gold is it profitable if so what is the worth i cant seem to find anything about it?

(1) copper+( alu)+(tin)+zinc. Right ,but in what ratio?
I said thst at the begin of the video 😉 89% copper, 5% aluminium, 5% zinc and 1% tin. Ratios are by weight
Nice. Made the middle of my day. Ever think of putting a gopro into the cool down pot?
Thanks! I might do that once, I still need to buy a proper go-pro once :)
Great video and lovely welds
Thanks mate!
Thanks for your time grate job 👍
No problem buddy, thank you for the support!

لا، هذا ليس ذهبًا حقيقيًا، ولا يمكنك بيعه على أنه ذهب. إنها مجرد سبيكة من النحاس والزنك والقصدير. نأمل أن تكون هذه إجابة جيدة لك
Plz show for me, drop few drops of nitric acid on your bars, whether or not nitric dissolve the gold bar
I do not have such acid. It is not real gold 🤣
@@Metalstacker what else is it useful
@@RBN181 it's a beautiful alloy, it is mostly used in coins. I will use it for sand casts
Nordic Gold
....and by the way, the welds look great!!!
Thanks dude! Just got my 9th lesson, getting better and better :)
