I just had the exact same problem. First start of the year wouldn't go. I thought I wouldn't see carb problems this year b/c I used fuel stabilizer in all my engines before I put them away for the winter. I've come to the conclusion that the fuel needs to be drained from the tank and the carb at the end of the season.

Thank you for visiting & taking the time to comment. I find it the best way to store equipment as well. I will run it until it runs dry. I am not 100% sure but I think the stabilizer works better with non ethanol gas. I have just about the same thing but my mower will run for about 30 minutes and then die. It starts right back up and dies in about 5 minutes. It then keeps dying every few minutes. I have replaced the fuel cap, fuel line, fuel filter and air filter. could it be the electronics? It is a 2001 mtd yard machine with a tecumseh 15.0 ohv. Any ideas? I am about to replace the carb. Thx for your help

Long Hair Hippie Pirate, It may be the coil. When they are going bad but still produce spark they stop working when they get hot. Once cooled off they start again. Drove me crazy. If you can get the specs you can check the OHMs to make sure before you buy a new one. I do not have them or I would send them to you. Maybe a local shop will check it out for you if you cannot get the specs. Looks like you covered the fuel supply. Remove the fuel tank, make sure nothing is in it or the nipple where the fuel line connects to it. I have found debris & small bugs causing a clog .Change the spark. Also remove the kill wire on the magneto/coil. You will have to use the choke to shut it off if this works and if this works it means the that wire has a short in it .

I know exactly what you were talking about with the dirty outside of a carburetor. Normally before I start taking it apart I stop that my part washer give it a good cleaning and rinse it off with some water and either wait for it to dry or blow it out and then start taking it all apart. I've had a couple people who thought doing it that way would get water and cleaner into the carburetor and would stop it from working. Like I tell them when everything is taken apart all the parts go into my Sonic cleaner which is filled with water and cleaner.
I'm really glad I clicked on your video. I haven't had to work on any of the new carburetors. I don't work on small engines as a job I mostly do it just because I was forced to retire early and I get bored. So all my neighbors friends and family all bring their broken things here and I work on their things for nothing. The only thing I ever charge anyone for is if I have to order parts or doing oil change. I like how you show that little o-ring I would not have known that was in there and in all likelihood would have blown that out with my air compressor.
When you say that you found that o-ring at harbor freight tools did you find it in one of their kits that has a hundred rings in it? I'd like to get my hands on some of them just to keep in case I come across one of these carburetors. I have the red box kit from there filled with o-rings I just cannot remember if it goes down that small.
I enjoyed your video and I most definitely hit the like and subscribe button. I always figured that's the least I can do when someone shows me how to do something.

Most people do not realize the time & effort it takes doing these videos, even the ones that are a little lacking in video quality LOL. I started doing these out of a curiosity & then thought that this may be entertaining and or helpful for family, friends and others. Like you I end up doing repairs for family & friends. I always had an interest in engines & how things worked in general. If YT was around 45 years ago I'd be a genius today LOL. The o ring I used was from that red box from HF. I know it lasted over a year, I do not have that mower any longer. You can buy the o rings on Amazon if you do not have that size any longer in the kit.

How does one get the bottom black bowl off?
I have now bought 3 new carburetors from Amazon.ca via China and 2 had the choke butterfly flap stuck open. Cannot close it. And third one I got just today will only close 60% of the way and that is no good as I need full choke to start, hot or cold.
My lawn tractor, same carb as yours and same engine would start and stop in 15 seconds and that is it so I assume dirty carb after sitting all winter.
I am now thinking of taking the bowl of the new carb and attaching it to my old one as my old carb has both butterfly flaps open and close. Is often most of the problem in the bowl with old gas or the top part? Thanks and great video.

Thanks! I've been fighting a very finicky Techumseh engine for the last 2 years and this is hopefully the silver bullet it needs. I've gone through hell and back I feel like with this mower because a new riding mower is just way too much money. Currently only runs on full throttle. Moving throttle any lower kills it. Taken the bowl off and cleaned it each mowing season, replaced the fuel filter both times, did an oil change, new spark plug, new air filter, and nothing worked. The last step is to replace these O-Rings when they arrive because I know in the 15+ years my family has owned this mower it's never been done and this is the second video I've seen mentioning the O-Ring at the main jet was swollen shut. The only thing else I can even do is replace the gas cap because the rubber seal actually disintegrated into the fuel tank last year but didn't make it run any worse so doubt it was the issue. Now to await their arrival since I didn't want to risk not having the right part by going to Lowes or Home Depot.

TigerAceRay, You're welcome, I am glad this was of help .And thank You for watching and taking the time to comment.
Another item you should check is the fuel line. I have learned the "HARD" way LOL. In my area I cannot buy ethanol free gas unless I buy the premix, for 2 cycle engines at 5.94 a quart, yep if you are calculating that's $23.76 a gallon. Back to the fuel line, the ethanol gas will deteriorate the inside of the line causing it to collapse & slowing the flow. It is easy to check when the engine sits over night & is cold just remove the line & have it run into a safe container. If it flows you're ok
if it drips' out or has a slow flow change it.
TigerAceRay keep me posted on how you you made out,

@@JOEZEP54 Unfortunately replacing the O-rings didn't fix it as I had hoped. It does run better though but still surges every few seconds. Going to take a look at the linkages and governor next. Did some minor tweaking and it started to get run better but was too dark out. Might be as simple as the spring is stretched out too much, which is possible since it's 15+ years old.

    • @tigeraceray2757
      @tigeraceray2757 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Will Look at the fuel line as well and might as well replace it since it's fairly cheap to replace and that could also well be the issue since all of our gas here is reformulated and has a minimum of 10% ethanol.
