    I must say you do a very good job explaining the differences between fake, glass filled, etc. I find your videos informative and extremely useful, they have been helpful to point out all the flaws right off the bat to my lady friend that her online purchase was a big mistake. My thanks.

    2 factors plays in the quality of a ruby or sapphire crystals, clarity and color. Today in the market you can find rough corundum of low quality, stones looks translucent to opaque (yes they show a hexagonal shape, pyramidal for the sapphire and flat for the ruby). Usually they are heavily treated to improve clarity or color or both. A natural ruby crystal of 10 carats clean with good color is very rare nowadays. Less rare for sapphire but still expensive depending of the color.

    Hello, first Zircon is not easy to sell because of the name that is close to Cubic Zirconia and many people think it is the same stuff. Important point is that, Zircon is brittle and you have to take care of it. A Zircon will alway be alone, never with other Zircon or any other stones.
    For the price all depends if the Zircon have been treated or not. Most of the blue on the market are treated as the golden and the colorless.
    Depending where you buy the price will range around 100$US per carat.

    LOL Yes I'm Swiss from Origin but I am working in Mexico City where there is so many tricks, synthetics and imitation gems. So better know the matter when you run a lab!

    Today it is not so easy to find natural rough ruby crystal well formed of gem quality. You mostly find the rough in "Placer". Again very rare when you can find a rough clear and transparent. I am not a specialist about the rough market, but I'll say that more than 90% to 95% of those are not clean, translucent to opaque of commercial quality. Most of those rough are now treated with glass to improve clarity and color. Price is going for few $ per carat in Bangkok market. Clean ruby is priceless.

    The best advice I can give when people are looking to buy a gem is to check if that stone is talking, have brillance, luster. Does it talk to you. If yes, then you have to ask the dealer if the stone is natural and if the stone have been treated in any way. Some treatment are accepted on the trade, but all treatment MUST be disclosed. If the dealer hide something, it's a bad signe. You have to protect yourself and ask to be refund if the stone turn to be a fake, a synthetic or heavily treated. Take your precaution. Please, remember that, crystal is a rare piece made by geological process and some are rarer than other (like ruby). With the very strong demand on the mondial market there is not enough for every one. Then some smart people invest money every year to find some new ways to treat very low quality crystal to make them looking better and they sale at very high price piece of junk. Tons of that composite ruby have been sold and tons of new composite sapphire will be sold too in the next few years. Just imagine with the opening of the market of China where every woman wants a ruby, a sapphire or an emerald... Dealer need a lot more fake to supplie and all the nice stuff will be just more expensive for common people. Best regards.

    Price will go from 10 to 10000$US! Price will go with grading: Color, Saturation, Clarity, Cutting, Treatment... To fix a price for a stone, you have to go through all the grading process and then you'll have an idea about the price. Now, price for colored stone depend a lot on the demand on the market and where this market is located.

  • @MrFracknight

    Fine quality natural ruby (with no treatment) is going from 500$ to 1500$ for a one carat stone in the market today, if you have good connection! Retail can be the double. Fine ruby from Burma is around 5000$ for one carat fine quality, extra fine can reach 10 to 30.000$... So, when someone sell a 2 carats ruby for 100$, you know there is something wrong. Always ask questions before you buy.
    If you want to make some business, try to check directly where the stones are made...
    Good luck!

    Hi, it will be very difficult for me to do this as the Afghan ruby is not easy to find in the market and I do not have any in my collection. The best is to check the internet.
    the Afghan ruby are usually very included and mostly sold as rough. Fine gem quality specimen exist but are vey expensive and not easy to get.

    Rough ruby can be seen on the Internet to mineralminers. It is not so easy today to see rough ruby of gem quality, most of them are broken. You can easily google to check it out. I have seen beautiful natural no treated opaque ruby cut in slice, so all depend of the test of the people.
    What ever it is, I like better an opaque natural ruby no treated, than a nice looking composite ruby full of glass.
    Best regards

  • @MrFracknight
    @MrFracknight  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Checked that website and I can tell you all the rubies are new generation of clarity enhancement using glass filler. In those stones, sometime you have more glass than corundum, then the hardness is not 9 everywhere like they said and the durability is not the same as a real ruby. Those stone in Bangkok goes for few bucks as a wholesale per carat. I have seen some pieces better than others, with better color and better clarity, 2 things that is very difficult to evaluate online on a picture.

    I buy lots of uncut rough saphires and rubies for a few pounds each they are hexagonal in shape. Are they low quality aluminium oxide crystals? The rubies you talk about must be high quality rare crystals, is this correct?

    Thank you for all of your insights! I understand that buying online is not advised, but I'm wondering if I found an exception to the rule. I found John Saul rubies online at Liquidation(dot)com, and I'm wondering if it's worth buying and reselling.
    What do you think the fair market price per carat for these? They say that the rubies are real, but they seem to have a lot of inclusions.

    • @MrFracknight
      @MrFracknight  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      All the Ruby over 4 carats on the market today are treated with the new process of lead glass filing. That mean the trader are selling at very high price corundum that have a lot of glass inside the stone (Not really a crystal for me anymore). Usually it is easy to see that the stone have no life and they usually very included. A natural ruby of this size is very very very rare and are traded from 1000$ (commercial quality) to 40000$ US (extra fine) per carat depending on clarity, cut and color. This is the price for a heat treated one. No treated rubies are even rarer on the market and reserved for rich people and nearly never reach the open market. If you buy a stone for this price, you'll pay for glass and the hardness of glass is not very high comparing to corundum (Ruby) and you'll have some surprise. Better buy a synthetic...

    i like but i still don't understand much how do you can tell it's true ruby and man made when you use torch and magnifier.

    • @MrFracknight
      @MrFracknight  10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It is very very rare that a natural ruby to be perfectly clean, I mean with no inclusion. Synthetic ruby are usually very very clean so easy to spot with a loupe and torch. Other point is that flame fusion ruby show curving lines that is diagnostic for synthetic and that can be spotted with a loupe and torch. Some flux ruby can be more difficult to check out because of the flux inclusion that can be misleading for people with no experience. But today most of the synthetics are Flame fusion made because of the low price and easy technology to grow them.

      NOT AT ALL. I never trust any online business online. It is to easy to cheat people. I did buy online but only with people I know from long time and that I made some trade before. That's the only exception. Miracles on the gem market today do not exist.

      Unfortunately there is little chance. Could be natural with that new glass treatment they are doing in Thailand (Bangkok), or could be a synthetic. All depends on the inclusions into the stone. Could be glass too... Send me pictures if you want. servicio@suizomex.com
