Just a historical note-there actually was one cricket player who played major league baseball in the US. His name was Andre Rodgers. He was from the West Indies and played in the early 60's. He had a good, solid career as an MLB player, lasting about 10 years. I don't think he was ever a professional cricketer, but he was a cricket player first and adapted his game to baseball.

    • @RRaquello
      @RRaquello 10 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      *****
I think a good professional baseball batter would be able to adapt to cricket style batting with a little time & practice. I think the adjustment would be as much mental as physical because, it seems to me (not an expert) that batting in cricket is as much a defensive as offensive task while in baseball it's purely offensive. It takes a different mindset. I think a baseball pro could do it because they are something we aren't-elite athletes.
On the other hand, I don't think a pitcher could make the adjustment from baseball to cricket or vise versa. The style of throwing is just too different.
Bear in mind that my example of Andre Rodgers is an isolated case. He's the only one I know of (outside of the very early days of baseball-example, George & Harry Wright back in the 1860's) where a top cricketer became a top level baseball professional.
I would actually like to see a fair test of cricket batter vs. baseball pitcher, baseball batter vs. cricket bowler, both on a cricket & baseball field using the BEST players from each sport. It would be fun & interesting. Most of the "tests" I've seen here on YT are skewed one way or the other. My opinion is that while the sports have similarities, they are really very different, and to expect the players from one to automatically succeed in the other is like expecting drivers from one form of motor racing (say F1) to succeed in another (stock car racing). We've seen that though F1 drivers are considered the elite drivers in the world, the ones who have tried (including F1 champ Villeneuve) have failed in NASCAR, considered a lower level motor sport. The sports, for all their seeming similarities are different enough that the skills are not necessarily translateable.
I would suspect that, after some practice and adjustment, the baseball & cricket players would look competent in the other sport because they are great athletes, but wouldn't be up to the best professional level in the sport not their own. I have no axe to grind. I grew up a baseball fan, but I've seen a little cricket and what I've seen Ive liked and found very intriguing.

I played baseball through my teens. I started playing cricket because it was part of my rugby club. Hitting sixes if they were full tosses was easy; mind you, these are majestic. I ended up batting at number 5, 6, or 7 and averaged 29 runs over my 15 years. I threw my wicket away a lot when we batted first. In the late overs, I tried to hit nothing but boundaries. One year, I decided I wouldn't do that and ended up with 3 or 4 not outs. My average shot through the roof, and it didn't hurt the team. I did manage to get 4 teeth knocked out, getting a top edge to a full toss. It was very hot that day. I made the mistake of taking my helmet ⛑️ off because my glasses were getting fogging up. What a jolt, 23 years of rugby a lot of ice hockey, and it was cricket that gave me the most dental problems, haha. Great game cricket, unless you play in a two day game and lose your wickets early. Seventy-five overs in the field is torture when you only bowl a few overs. I learned that when I played in Australia for one season, We were in the A grade, but our team was the Bad News Bears right down to the yellow caps. I had never batted when a 4 seam ball was used. My goodness, the swing of the ball took some getting used to. It was a great experience, and I made many good friends and drank my share of tinnies haha

We had an American exchange student in High School here in Australia and he was focused on being a pro baseballer, he got a scholarship at collage for it later in the US but didn't take it further. Once he got over the fear of the ball being smaller and heavier he was such a good fielder. Never got the hang of batting or bowling but when he was on the boundary he took a catch off the bounce and threw it back to the keeper who got a run out and he went BALLISTIC as we all did. Once the adrenaline wore off his biggest complaint was his hand hurt so much he might not have been able to wank for a couple days!

@@user-nu3vf9py9w basically cricket is a game where you hit the ball and run in-between the wickets for runs. If you run twice you'll get 2 runs you run 1 you get 1 run. You can run 3 but it's quite rare because the fielders of the opposing side will get the ball in possession after its struck before you can run the third run. If you hit a "home run" where the ball goes OVER the ropes/boundary as in the ball literally flies over it, you get 6 runs the highest you can get in a fair delivery. If the ball touches the boundary or bounces before the boundary and goes over it, you'll get 4 runs. Basically what happened in this video is the bowler, the person who threw balls, threw it like how a baseball player would do, in cricket these balls are bad to bowl (they are called full tosses btw) as they are the easiest to put away for a six or a four, that's why some people in this replies section are saying what the batter did wasn't as impressive as you thought. It's the bowlers fault for bowling such easy balls to put away.
Tell me if you understand this explanation lmao hopefully i dont confuse you

The earliest definite reference to cricket is dated Monday, 17 January 1597 (i.e., a Julian date which is 1598 by modern reckoning under the Gregorian calendar). The first ever international cricket game was between the USA and Canada in 1844. The match was played at the grounds of the St George's Cricket Club in New York.
The first recorded game of "Bass-Ball" took place in 1749 in Surrey, and featured the Prince of Wales as a player. Baseball evolved from older bat-and-ball games already being played in England by the mid-18th century. This early form of the game was apparently brought to Canada by English immigrants, to the USA by Canadians of both British and Irish ancestry.

So I'm an American who played baseball for 13 years of my life (up through high school). I also just got back from a year abroad in England where I played cricket. Here are some thoughts. In general, I thought that batting in baseball is harder than cricket, but bowling/fielding in cricket is harder than baseball.
Baseball batting is harder since you have a much smaller hitting surface. A bat in baseball only has a relatively small segment that you can really hit the ball well off of. Whereas in cricket you have a pretty large hitting surface. Yes, some parts of the cricket back are better to hit than others due to thickness, but really it pales in comparison to the differences of a baseball bat. Secondly, once you figure out how to time hitting a ball off of a bounce in cricket, the bounce becomes nice because it takes speed off of the ball-- so in baseball you're facing generally faster balls being pitched (bowled) which makes it more challenging. Finally, in baseball you have fair/foul balls, so you have a smaller area of the field that you can hit to. Cricket you can hit anywhere and it's in play. Sometimes that's a disadvantage (since if you hit a ball straight backwards in baseball it won't be caught, it will just hit the netting behind home plate, whereas in cricket the ball can be caught), but I usually found it easier to get more hits/runs because of it.
In cricket, bowling and defense is harder. Defense for a simple reason-- no gloves. Cricket balls don't seem to be hit as hard as baseballs (I think because of the slower bowling speeds and because of the different ball), but they also are even harder than baseballs, so it's not always easy to catch them barehanded, at least for me. Then bowling is harder than pitching I think (although this may just because I'm used to pitching--more of a personal preference thing) because of the motion.
In cricket you can only bend at the elbow by 10 degrees, whereas in baseball you can bend at the elbow as much as you want-- pitching is a much more natural motion. Plus you have the running start and the fact that you really have to bowl on a bounce to be good as added difficulties to cricket bowling over pitching.
They're different games with different difficulties and playstyles. That's about it.

Good analysis. The only thing I’d say is that the ball bouncing it makes it harder to play imo because players in cricket are trained to dismiss full tosses pretty easily and every ball in baseball is a full toss basically. The fastest baseball pitch is similar to the fastest cricket ball ever bowled. Both around 100mph.

It's actually pretty easy. The bowler has to bowl the ball with one hand anyway he likes unless it doesn't go too wide or his foot doesn't go beyond the crease or the ball doesn't soar into the skies. There is a boundary around the ground. If the bastmen run , it's considered as 1 run . Similarly 2, 3 etc. But if the batsmen hits the ball all the way above the boundary he gets 6 runs in 1 ball. If it doesn't go over and just hits the boundary he gets 4 runs

Fantastic strikes by Travis Birt. I am sure just as exciting to watch by either a Cricket or Baseball fan.
For those unfamiliar with Cricket ... here is an old explanation of the game.
You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out.
When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game

I have played high level of cricket with very high level of baseball players (In Australia so not sure how that would compare to the USA). BUT the baseball players could hit the ball for miles IF and ONLY IF it was in their hitting zone. Anything else like a yorker or bouncer got them out 8 times out of ten.
They scored some good hundreds but very very few. I remember one guy scored 190 in like 9 overs could have been a couple more.
BUT all the baseball players side cricket is the harder game for a couple of reason:
1st because the ball bouncers and can do anything once it bounces. This can be totally different game to game because of the pitch.
2nd Cricket bowlers (or pitchers as they are called in baseball) seem to get more late swing on the ball so for instance it might appear to be going down one line the move totally to another. Then add to this the point on the bounce and pitches
Where baseball player are the best comes to throwing god the arm on them.
    Hope this helps people understand

Bret Lee had a trial in Australia once, overseen by Major League Baseball scouts without really intending switch from cricket. He did it for a bit of fun. He was throwing fast balls at 90mph and hitting the ball 100 metres. Remember this was a guy who had never played baseball before. Think what he could have done after honing his technique. Kieron Pollard went to Cuba and had a hit with Cuban national baseball players and he too was hitting the ball a long way after facing up to some pitching. Baseball players barely move. A batter swings at a few pitches (mostly swing and a miss) and he's done for 15-20 minutes, fielders are mostly stationary because the ball either does not come their way or when it does it's usually straight to them, barely needing to move. Pitcher throws from a spot. This is why so many baseball players are overweight. Some of them would look horrible in cricket whites (with their belly sticking out). Baseball is mostly a stationary game with occasional sprint to bases. It's a game for lazy people and if you watch you almost feel as if the lethargic and lazy attitude of the players will rub off on you. You are better off not watching.

There are no baseball players here. This clip is from the Australian big bash league. Both the batsman (Travis Brit) and the bowler(Clint McKay) are former Australian cricketers and the title was meant to be sarcastic because McKay was bowling poorly.

+Warren552011 cricket is a game of anticipation. Where will the ball be once it hits the ground? Baseball is a game of timing. When do I swing? Plus the motion behind cricket batting and baseball batting are enormously different. In cricket, you use your elbow more than anything. But in baseball, you use your entire body from your feet up. Plus I would love to see you hit a round ball with a round bat squarely. It's quite difficult for the average human to do it much less somebody that has never done it before.

    • @treymagathan847
      @treymagathan847 7 ปีที่แล้ว

+Warren552011 look up a certain baseball player named Bo Jackson. That guy was an all around badass. He was fast, strong, had a great eye, excellent fielding anticipation, had a cannon for an arm, the only thing he didn't have was a short memory. If he messed up once, he would probably mess up several more times. I can't even tell you how many bats he broke in his career. He even broke a bat as he was swinging and still hit the ball. And he also played American Football, a true symbol of American athletics.

    Borrowed this from *Well Adjusted*:
In cricket, it's called a ground, not a park. The numbers on the large scoreboard would show the current number of runs scored by the team in play, and the total scored by the opposition if their innings is complete, each of the batsman's order numbers, the numbers of runs each has scored, and the method how the previous batsmen got out. LBW, stumped, bowled, caught, run out or deflected onto stumps.
LBW means leg before wicket, when a player offers a stroke and the ball hits their leg when it would have gone on to hit the wicket and most likely removed the bails. It is the decision of the umpire, or he can offer it for review from the recording monitors. Stumping is when a batsman has the bails removed while out of his crease, meaning his bat is not grounded inside the white line in front of him when the ball is delivered. Running out is when either set of bails are removed before a player grounds his bat inside the opposite or his own crease, having left it. Either batsmen can be run out regardless of who played the stroke. If a player deflects the ball onto the stumps, he is only out if the bails fall. There are three long stumps holding up two bails.
Each team starts with 11 players, of which the fielding team have to get 10 batsmen out, before the number of fixed overs is complete in a limited overs game. The best, safest batsmen are put into bat first so that others can assist them progress the scoring. The batting team only have two batsmen on the field at one time.
Runs are scored by batsmen running between the wickets/creases, or a ball crosses the boundary rope. A 4 (4 runs) is scored when the ball hits the ground before crossing the rope, and a 6 (6 runs) is scored if the ball crosses the rope without first touching the ground.
Scoring highest after fewer balls is the measure of good batsman, scoring 4s and 6s helps. Fewest runs scored after most balls are the measure of a good bowler. Wickets taken are also a measure of a bowler's ability.
The caption, 1-43 OVER 4.3 3-203 shows comparative team scores and amount of overs played. 4 overs 3 balls. There are 6 balls per over.
D/L stands for Duckworth-Lewis, a complex scoring system that gets used when the number of overs has to be limited due to available light, time or weather conditions after one team had completed their innings.
    Simples.

Fun fact: the first ever international cricket match was between the America and Canada in 1844. There is a rich history of cricket in the US prior to the Civil War-from then onwards baseball became the main sport.
However, there are some enthusiasts and clubs who still play it (the same with rugby). For instance, there is a group based in Los Angeles called the Compton Cricket Club, who play to combat homelessness and gang violence (they came to my school back in 2011)

I'm a woman, born in England who also has lived in the USA and I love both cricket and baseball. You don't have to hate one in order to love the other. Both are great skillful tactical games. I really got into baseball it's great. Both games have lots of similarities and for those complaining about the baseball uniforms, they have been around almost unchanged in style since the beginning of the game (over 100 years) just like the normal white cricket uniforms have. It's tradition, don't knock it

Look up on Google a guy called Ian Pont. He was a cricketer (now coach) in English professional cricket. One American Spring (I think it was 1986) he trialled with six MLB teams, including the Yankees, and one of them (the Philadelphia Phillies) even gave him an extended month trial and even played one game during these trials. He pitched at 100 mph during these trials. Towards the end of the trials he got fed up and came back to England to continue his cricket career with Essex.
