  • Kuu (空) is a Japanese word that describes "void", "emptiness" and "sky". This is one of the 5 elements of Japanese philosophy, Godai (五大), originated from Japanese Buddhism.
    EARTH (地 chi),
    WATER( 水 sui/ka),
    FIRE(火 hi/ka) ,
    WIND (風 fuu/kaze)
    VOID (空, kuu/sora)
Kuu (空) is the "empty space" beyond our "linear time & physical space". This is the eternal space, where we can connect to our unlimited potentials and possibilities. Creativity, Inspiration, Mystic experiences are born. We are in a state of bliss and peace. It is the state without our conceptual thought.
How can we be in this state of Kuu, void?
I explain this further in this talk.
This is the sevens episode of "5 minutes on Japanese Wisdom" by Azumi Uchitani, once a week, introducing the Japanese life philosophy that brings inner peace.

I am reading several books about Japanese Art right now, and there appear to be a vast variety of categories of emptiness out there. Unfortunately transcription rules changed over time and Kanji weren't always accessable for printing which is why I am at a loss with some terms, and maybe you could help enlighten me in regards to some of these terms.
In reference to "Yohaku" or "Yohaku no bi" Kenji Moriya writes (he wrote his book in German, so I have to translate from there): Yohaku (empty space) is one of the most important compositional elements in East Asian art. It means in the overall picture the sky, water and the endlessness of the world, but it can also express the atmosphere/mood of the seasons. Thus it is actually a negative means of expression, but it is based on an Oriental wisdom - the concept "Taikyo" (a mysterious emtiness) or "Mu" (Nothing): it is symbolized here by means of painting technique.
From the looks of it, Taikyo seems to have some things in common with Yūgen at least in the sense of the mysteriousness. And what about Kuu and Mu?
Sorry for the long comment and all these questions.

Your video is excellent. I am happy to have discovered your channel. The discovery of this silent and timeless Self during meditation as well as the teachings of Eastern philosophies have literally changed my life.

Thank you so much for your videos. Can I ask the following, to me, it seems like focusing on say, the warmth of the coffee, is still an active thought process, which may bring calmth, but it doesn't bring me into the "void", how do you experience this?
Also, the emptiness will bring calmth and happiness, but lately I have been thinking that too much calmth might suppress the fact that I want to achieve certain things in life... Since if we are all perfectly calm, there kind of is no reason to achieve anything.... or is that a wrong thought?
    Regards,
    Juan
I was in the gallery a few months ago :)

      Hi, Juan, Thanks for commenting here! Below I answer your two questions;
1.feeling of the void through "the warmth of coffee"? - it is about focusing on feeling and to stop our thought process. When our mind is occupied, our feeling could be conditioned by our mind. So it is a simple practice to be at the point Zero, no positive, no negative, and feel the "truth" of the warmth bring our awareness to the present moment and not in the past or future. You will experience that your mind is quiet, feel the emptiness, but the connection to your pure essence.
      2. Calmness vs Achieving ?- They are two different types of energy. But, you can still be calm and you can still achieve. It is all about being in the balance. We all have feminine and masculine energy, like the moon and the sun. In this emptiness, in stillness, without conceptual thoughts, without any manipulation, we would tune into our pure essence, our potential, we would be downloading inspiration, which will allow us and guide us to where our true essence desires, not our ego, nor, our conditioned mind desire. When we are on this path, we are ready to use the "achieving" energy to take action with a flow.
      Is that clear to you?
Simply, Let's give our hard-working many "coffee breaks" throughout a day :-)
      Best wishes,
      Azumi

I really like the Chinese Tiantai understanding of 空 as opposed to the Madhyamika understanding of 空! From what I understand, the Madhyamika 空 is probably best characterized as any description or view you use to describe reality out there cannot ever be true. Whereas the Tiantai understanding of 空 is that any description or view you use to describe reality out there can be true.
There seems to be this idea of Tiantai 空 even in the Nikaya Pali Canon versions of Buddhism. I remember this story where the Buddha is asked by a young man named Vasettha how he can unite with God (Brahma) after he dies. Instead of the Buddha telling Vasettha that ultimately there is no God in a monotheistic sense, he acts as if it is actually true. The Buddha even goes so far as to not discuss nirvana, the eightfold path, or the four noble truths. The Buddha chooses instead to tell Vasettha that he should meditate on good intentions and actions, and that after he dies doing those things he will be with God in Heaven.
Does Japan interpret 空 more like the Chinese Tiantai, such as in Zen and Pure Land Buddhism?

    THE SUN HAS NO HEAT
    CHAPTER 7
    AIR.
    75
The essence of air is transparency, and its characteristics,
lightness; it is the weakest element in the enclosure, and so transparent,
that it admits of the passage of vision clear through to the
ball. It fills the area, between the surface and the ball, which is the
upper half of the enclosure. This is its habitation. That half this
vast enclosure should be assigned to one element alone as its habitation,
bespeaks something unprecedented. !t cannot be seen or
felt, and it is non-resistant, but its habitation is the arena where
movement has sway, and where all elements and things meet in the
grand display of life. Can any active element, primal or secondary,
be named, which does not appear in this arena? Only one primal
element, and it is "heat," which is the only prisoner :n this vast enclosure,
because of its destructive nature. Some one may say that it is the habitation of light but it is
not, because light does not occupy the whole enclosure at the
same time, it is a transitory, secondary element, and follows its
source,-the sun, hence it is the reservation of light. Between
habitation and reservation there is a vast difference. The first implies
dwelling place, but the latter is provisional. You may reserve
a pullman birth in going on a journey, whie::h is provisional,
but you do not reserve a room in your house for yourself. It is
    your house,-your habitation.
Your neighbour tells you that it is so hot that he feels the air,
but he is not telling you the truth. The air cannot be felt; Imt
what he really feels is temperature, whether to a greater degree of
the feeling of heat or cold. There is another peculiar thing about
air. However much may be added to air's habitation with material
things, its density is unimpaired. The weakness of air is indicated
by the actions of the weakest things in the enclosure, for a newborn
babe moves through it, as well as a flea; and yet this philosophy
is universally held that air has pressure, (atmospheric pressure); but
atmospheric pressure does not exist. Air is the most mobile element
in the: enclosure. It was made for transportation.

I really love that there is this element in japanese philosophy too. In Ayurveda, this is known as Ether, which i had been desiring for some time. I truely feel this energy when i look into the night sky, nothingness or vastness. it's really soothing and beautiful. Thank you for sharing this, i appreciate it~ Your topics resonate with my needs and interests :)
