Awesome, my favorite bass player, along with Stuart Zender (another underrated one by the way) Besides Jane’s, Eric also did the brilliant Deconstruction and Polar Bear albums. He is not only a great bassist, but great songwriter as well.
I don’t think Zender is underrated. He is widely known in the Bass world as one of the best Jamiroquai just never took off in the US as much as they did in Europe and the UK.

Eric was the back bone and musical driving force in Janes Addiction. Imo they haven't released any nearly as good after he left the band. And if you check out their setlist from over the years it's still filled with the songs built around his bass lines. Very little is played off of the records he's not on.
Thanks for doing this. This guy was my absolute bass hero when I first started playing. I was even fortunate enough to meet him once, after a Janes gig in 1991. He never seems to get the credit he deserves. Legend.

0:23 Perry Farrell wanted Bill Laswell to produce "Nothing's Shocking", based on some of Laswell's world music production that Perry loved. Laswell turned them down without hearing them, based on this photo, lol. Lucky for them, Dave Jerden was the right guy for them.

Eric didn't use much / any effects but he always used a rack mount compressor. I don't know the brand. But that's part of why he had such a punchy, even sound. You know the joke?: "What's the difference between a good bass player and a great bass player?" A: a compressor and 5 IQ points.

I always thought Eric was underrated, his playing was awesome and Mountain Song was one of the first bass lines I ever learned

he had an awesome tone, heavy and thick without abandoning the funk vibe. one of the greatest grunge/alt bassists ever IMO
