Eric Avery is one of the unsung heroes of the alternative rock movement in the late 80s and early 90s. As one of the two founders of Jane's Addiction, Avery along with Perry Ferrell helped define the So-Cal sound that brought light to bands like Sublime and The Red Hot Chili Peppers, bringing the era of hair metal to an end. Now, nearly 20 years removed from Jane's apex, Avery is striking out again with a self-produced solo album, Help Wanted.
In this episode of Rehearsal Space, Eric discusses the disillusion that led him to leave Jane's Addiction and how his interest in technology brought him back into the musical fold. He goes on to discuss the inspiration and production technique that went into Help Wanted.

Working for Eric as a tech during the Polarbear era was a Blessing. He is what makes music great at every level.

It strange. But what did he think. A band named Hampster is not likely to take off.

Eric was THE sound of Jane's... listen to Jane's, then Deconstruction, then any neuvo-Jane's and you'll notice the one and MAIN ingredient missing from the last is Eric.
I cannot WAIT to get this disk tomorrow! I didn't even know it was out until today.

I'm a JA fan who loves both Eric and Perry and i think they are both genious. But people don't seem to recognize Eric the same way.
I was interested to hear about his Deconstruction/Polar Bear era here... I just love those projects and no one seems to talk about them.

I totally agree with you. He's got that tribal thing goin which was one of the things that made Jane's what it was.

I completely know what you mean. I learned to play bass by playing along with Nothing's Shocking and he does have a very similar sound to the Cure, particularily the Pornography album. Also there's a huge Bauhaus and Joy Division influence in his work I think.

The way Eric Avery makes his music and his thoughts about it kind of remind me of myself, only with a LOT more talent. To buy his CD I will have to import it to Sweden myself...

I really like the original Jane's Addiction sound, with Avery. Porno for Pyros and the new Jane's Addiction didn't have the same "feel," so I kind of lost interest. But when I hear Eric's solo work, it has a mystical sound that I was picking up in the original Jane's. It's great he followed his intuition and went his own way.

I guess I was generalizing about PFP. The fact is that I only heard a few songs by them, but never listened to their albums. I did like the song about humans as pets (can't remember the name of it) and a few other songs. Once we get used to a particular band's sound, we kind of get stuck on it. Instead I should have recognized that people like Farrell are all about breaking new ground and against the whole idea of falling into a creative rut.

Eric is a great man and definitive for Jane's early sound.
Ppl bitch about Starys but it was all written in the same musical structures that NS and Ritual. But since Eric wasn't there, ppl didn't even gave it a chance.
As far as his solo material goes, I find to be weak and predictable... Not even gonna mention the "lyrics"....

Yeah it suck that Eric isn't in Jane's. But come on, they got Duff McKagan of GNR, that's a solid replacement if you ask me. I hope the chemistry is good and I can't wait for their new album :)
