I just joined a plein air group & tried it only once so far - boy are you right. My paintings done in the studio are usually ok, but I was so overwhelmed with the information I was seeing outside that the painting turned out EXTREMELY confused - like my mind was I guess! The other painters smiled knowingly & told me it takes time to get used to. Thank you for all of your insights & suggestions!

I once had a workshop instructor, I took his classes in Lake Tahoe (well I mean around the lake! lol) in the 90's and the subject of "failed paintings" came up to our group while he was demo-ing in the morning. He said two funny things that have stuck with me. Number 1 was "Don't die with bad paintings in your studio; destroy them quickly if you get a bad diagnosis from your doctor." and number two: "No painting is ever a complete failure; it can always serve as a bad example-- so you don't do that again!!" :D
I don’t like the reference to “failed” paintings. To me any effort is a success. I don’t strive for genius paintings, I just want to learn and uncover the truth about how I see the world, little by little.
Your videos are very helpful. I enjoy the full length video with voice overlay. I know sometimes when I paint I cannot also talk about it at the same time. I believe the voice overlay gives you time to review and decide what is important to share with us. Thank you for helping me become a better painter and understanding focus.
Ha! You're right John, if I talked while I painted there would be a stream of consciousness and maybe even gibberish. I usually do all the editing, cutting out the slow or extraneous parts and then do the voice over when it's cut to the time limit I put on myself. Thanks for your input! Thanks for letting me know Michael! I try to do those whenever I can, like the smaller ones. Bigger paintings that take more time to do, have to be condensed a bit, but I try never to speed them up more than 2X. At that speed, you can still see everything that's being done. And along with my voice-over explanation, it should help you to know what I'm thinking or why I do what I do. Happy painting and go get 'em!!
I really enjoyed this Steve. It is so true. After many ups and downs and lots of painting, I have found my voice. An artist who stands out and has a special recognisable style is John Hammond, a British impressionistic artist. He is superb and well worth taking a look at . He works in acrylics.

Nowadays, I do as much normal speed as possible, but since so many of the paintings I do are very time consuming, I mix it up and have some of the video at normal speed mixed in with timelapse. Here, me being relocated to the southwest, I like Matt Smith's work. Regarding Payne, when I lived near Tahoe, I once mule packed, with a friend, into one of his old camps, out of Big Pine, in the eastern Sierra. Saw his ghost at night in our camp, at about 2 AM, in the moonlight. Just kidding!!!! But 5th Lake is a place he painted often, Big Pine Canyon is the location name!
Excellent! It's good to find a left-handed painter. As one myself, l realised that at a young age you had to draw from right to left in order to see the image. The problem is that we are taught to write from left to right! As for painters l admire, apart from the obvious greats, here in the UK there is Peter Brown, a contemporary plein air painter of great skill, and from the past, John Arnesby Brown. And in the US from the past, Thomas Moran and Frederick Judd Waugh. There are many contemporary US painters l like who paint in a traditional way. An interesting and informative video. Thanks.

This is an exceptional way of letting the students of art, like me, know the anatomy of painting process, step by step. But I would like to request you out of what comprises more of my curiosity than learning the technique, that is to have in between the teaching process a peep into what is going on onto your color palette, so as to come to know about the drama of the colors being played; their tints and viscosity which , I think , also is included in the fundamentals of painting. Thank you for this great ride into the warmth of the west.
Oh, and it is kind of nice to see the work happen in real time;) It gives a feeling of almost an in-person lesson.. brings the learning prosess a little closer.

really like the normal speed videos. so much help when trying it yourself. the way you apply your paint reminds me so much of what Mark Carder says about painting "in the abstract" and he recently posted a video with that title. He talks about how that was a method used by Sargent. some of my favorite contemporary painters are Darcie Peet, Bill Inman, Clyde Aspevig, Jay Moore, Cyrus Afsary and some guy named Steve Atkinson.
Chuck Black is my favorite. He reminds me of my late brother who I lost in a plane crash in '14. My brother was a fantastic painter. He wanted me to paint. I said that I couldn't. But my younger brother and I got together in spring 2 years ago and found out that though we live 900 miles from each other then we had both picked up a paint brush. None of us 9 siblings are as good as Ray but Chuck Black is the one who reminds me of Ray. My perfectist brother who we all miss, so much. We've got all his paintings; he never sold any or showed them off. I could write a book about Ray Huddleston. He was abused; as we all were but Ray found one of his best gifts from God.
Nice like this normal speed but i also like the full work from the start to the end . I know it long but you can make it in two or three video . So if we cant take the time of three hours at time . We can see in are time . There are thing in the work that you might think we know but the more i look at something the more i learn .Thank You for Your Help an Time !

Great video at this speed. If anyone tries to represent a photo reference with accuracy they realise that a brush cannot compete with the pixel accuracy of a printer.. so its about interpretation, values and brush handling practise...I,m still learning, when you placed the painting beside the picture it looked great.
I loved the speed of this video, Steve. Your comments are more targeted, somehow, as you describe planes, working edges, etc. You asked for names of some of our favorite painters. Here are two of mine: Ron Boehmer and Lynn Mehta.
I haven't been painting for very long (Started in 2005). I have done a few outdoor paintings, but I really need t do a whole lot more just to get use to being outdoors, and not worrying so much of how the painting turns out. I know this will help with my studio work in those cold and gray and months. I paint mainly with acrylics so anything I don't like, I just wait for it to dry and paint over it. Thanks for the lesson.
I hope you do get back out Uncle Terry. Here's what I tell myself when I go out to paint (I wish I'd have mentioned this in the video). I'm going out to learn and to experiment, not to get a finished painting for a gallery wall. If that happens to happen that's gravy, but I tend to keep my studies and not sell them. I use them in the studio for remembering how the light worked at that time of day with those weather conditions. That's all =0)

Own painting style, own drawing or writing style....it's a lifetime task...in the midle - you said - we must draw, write, paint...thousand of pieces of art ( or supossed to be pieces of art ) .....your painting, your "calligraphy" as you said of it is simply beatiful! I like, from a long time ago, and admire the regionalist painter Thomas Harper Benton.....may be in today language more illustrator than a classic painter.....but it's one of my "historic favourit"...

This is an exceptional way of letting the students of art, like me, know the anatomy of painting process, step by step. But I would like to request you out of what comprises more of my curiosity than learning the technique, that is to have in between the teaching process a peep into what is going on onto your color palette, so as to come to know about the drama of the colors being played; their tints and viscosity which , I think , also is included in the fundamentals of painting. Thank you for this great ride into the warmth of the west.

really like the normal speed videos. so much help when trying it yourself. the way you apply your paint reminds me so much of what Mark Carder says about painting "in the abstract" and he recently posted a video with that title. He talks about how that was a method used by Sargent. some of my favorite contemporary painters are Darcie Peet, Bill Inman, Clyde Aspevig, Jay Moore, Cyrus Afsary and some guy named Steve Atkinson.
I like your videos with a combination of time lapse and normal speeds. Thanks for doing them.

Tom Thomson, my favorite painter.
Chuck Black is my favorite. He reminds me of my late brother who I lost in a plane crash in '14. My brother was a fantastic painter. He wanted me to paint. I said that I couldn't. But my younger brother and I got together in spring 2 years ago and found out that though we live 900 miles from each other then we had both picked up a paint brush. None of us 9 siblings are as good as Ray but Chuck Black is the one who reminds me of Ray. My perfectist brother who we all miss, so much. We've got all his paintings; he never sold any or showed them off. I could write a book about Ray Huddleston. He was abused; as we all were but Ray found one of his best gifts from God.

Nice like this normal speed but i also like the full work from the start to the end . I know it long but you can make it in two or three video . So if we cant take the time of three hours at time . We can see in are time . There are thing in the work that you might think we know but the more i look at something the more i learn .Thank You for Your Help an Time !

Great video at this speed. If anyone tries to represent a photo reference with accuracy they realise that a brush cannot compete with the pixel accuracy of a printer.. so its about interpretation, values and brush handling practise...I,m still learning, when you placed the painting beside the picture it looked great.

I loved the speed of this video, Steve. Your comments are more targeted, somehow, as you describe planes, working edges, etc. You asked for names of some of our favorite painters. Here are two of mine: Ron Boehmer and Lynn Mehta.

I haven't been painting for very long (Started in 2005). I have done a few outdoor paintings, but I really need t do a whole lot more just to get use to being outdoors, and not worrying so much of how the painting turns out. I know this will help with my studio work in those cold and gray and months. I paint mainly with acrylics so anything I don't like, I just wait for it to dry and paint over it. Thanks for the lesson.
I hope you do get back out Uncle Terry. Here's what I tell myself when I go out to paint (I wish I'd have mentioned this in the video). I'm going out to learn and to experiment, not to get a finished painting for a gallery wall. If that happens to happen that's gravy, but I tend to keep my studies and not sell them. I use them in the studio for remembering how the light worked at that time of day with those weather conditions. That's all =0)

Own painting style, own drawing or writing style....it's a lifetime task...in the midle - you said - we must draw, write, paint...thousand of pieces of art ( or supossed to be pieces of art ) .....your painting, your "calligraphy" as you said of it is simply beatiful!
I like, from a long time ago, and admire the regionalist painter Thomas Harper Benton.....may be in today language more illustrator than a classic painter.....but it's one of my "historic favourit"...

I knowed "the Regionalists" painters long time ago, in a lost time when I was 18 years old...
In 2007, I was visiting Bilbao Guguenheim museu, and for my surprise, a big temporary exhibition of Regionalists was hanging on walls....
It was a mistic moment!
