Yes, I'm in the category. Very high risk for complications and severe outcomes. Now I can't get a WFH job!!! This is ruining my life because I need to work. I've had an underlying health issue since about the age of 2. My life is precious to me because it was almost taken from me a couple of times early on. As an adult, it wasn't a career problem until COVID. Yes, I had to take care. Watch for sudden high fevers which I can get even as an adult, and I can't mess around when I get sick. But it was manageable. I even got a Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology which is quite rigorous. Worked in the field for a long time. I'm in my fifties and need to work. But I have to work from home. If I can't, I'm out on the streets. But I guess that's an acceptable outcome because " I was sick already" - and obviously of little use. And yes, I do feel that my life is considered disposable. So I thank so much for your dedication.

Thank you all for the support. It's so kind. I posted this to raise awareness that millions live with chronic conditions - sometimes for most of our lives. It is hard when you thought that you were a contributing member of society to be thought of as disposable.
I worked in biomedical research for a long time. My motivation was in major part due to the illnesses and inflammatory issues that plagued my mother and her father. My grandfather was also a type I diabetic. A combination of COPD, emphysema, and bronchiectasis took my mother at all too young an age. For the record, she was a non-smoker. I have never been so disappointed in the medical an research community as I am now, as many strongly imply that such losses are "acceptable" and we have to get back to normal so no precautions can be forced.
Dr. Osterholm is someone who shines a different kind of light and offers the science and compassion that drew me to the field to begin with.

At 49 minutes into the podcast, Dr. Osterholm speaks about the hospitals who continue to allow staff to wear surgical/procedure masks and that such masks are known to be ineffective. He said that some patients enter the hospital with a non-covid condition and then acquire covid in the hospital. At our local hospital and at many local doctor offices, masks are no longer worn at all. Whom do we trust? Today my husband's family doctor told him that if we get sick, we should test ourselves for covid with the home testing kits and not go to the doctor for a PCR test. If we have covid, then we should contact the him to get Paxlovid. But what about the lag time of confirming covid via home tests, and the need to get Paxlovid within 5 days of onset of symptoms? No PCR testing? Something seems amiss.

My Dad and I did home tests. Our doctor quickly prescribed Paxlovid for him. I held off a day or so and when I improved by day 2-3 decided not to take it ( with my doctors blessing)

In the Netherlands mask mandates were generally dumped on Feb 25, 2022 (except public transport) and on Mar 23, 2022. As we Dutch hate masks, because public masking is useless, nobody wears them. Not outside, not inside, not in hospitals, etc. Furthermore Paxlovid is not used, except for very few very ill patients.
So the USA are doing things wrong. Basically you follow ideology instead of science.

"Dr. Osterholm speaks about the hospitals who continue to allow staff to wear surgical/procedure masks" . . . . . Hard to believe, but that's what they reported.

Well, as you add additional immune escape, varying responses to different boosters and the increasing contagiousness of each new variant, complexity increases dramatically. As we intervene, we may or may NOT make things better. Welcome to the world of biological complexity. There are no quick fixes. So Dr. Osterholm is correct to be cautious because no one can truly wrap their arms around this situation. In fact, I worry about those arrogant enough to think they can.

The glory of friendship is not the hand that’s offered,
Nor the kind smile that comes with joyous cheer,
But the spiritual inspiration that lingers,
When someone believes and shows they will not fear.
The warmth of friendship is not a fleeting thing,
It requires trust, faith and courage to share,
A bond that can never be broken quite easily,
The respect and care of two hearts truly rare.
The greatest of friendships do not require words,
A simple glance can silently speak of much,
The comfort and joy of shared moments heard,
The blessing of friendship that’s such a sweet touch.
The glory of friendship is a blessing from above,
It is a gift to cherish, to foster and to love.

I had Covid for the first time 2 months. My Doctor prescribed the anti viral Paxlovid and it lessened the symptoms daily. The virus 🦠 is not something you want to deal with. The symptoms effect your mind and make it difficult to think or remember and also make you very angry and irritable. I would through all 6 sets of my sheets and most of my towels after 2 nights and lost 10 pounds from sweating. The virus seems to be aware of when nighttime is and just gets very intense, the fever comes in waves all night. It was the nastiest illness I’ve ever had, after my second dose of Paxlovid the symptoms would lessen by about half every day and were gone by 5 days

    • @MrJimSir

That's true, but from what I understand some people stop taking antibiotics when their illness seems to be gone, which also promotes antibiotic resistance. Also some doctors prescribe antibiotics for viral diseases.

    Dear Dr. Osterholm,
I wanted to bring to your attention some recent genetic studies that have been conducted on sub-Saharan African populations. These studies have revealed that these populations do not have any genetic contribution from Neanderthals or Denisovans. This is an important point to consider when discussing the potential impact of genetics on Neanderthal's empathic abilities and the role of fire for human health.
It has been suggested that certain genetic traits such as empathic abilities, which have been attributed to Neanderthals, may have been present in early human populations due to interbreeding with Neanderthals. However, these recent studies have shown that sub-Saharan African populations do not have any genetic contribution from Neanderthals, which suggests that these traits may have developed independently in early human populations.
Additionally, the use of fire for cooking and warmth has been linked to the emergence of certain human health benefits. However, the genetic contribution of Denisovans to human populations has also been suggested to have played a role in the development of this ability. However, these recent studies have also shown that sub-Saharan African populations do not have any genetic contribution from Denisovans, which suggests that the ability to control fire may have developed independently in early human populations.
In light of these findings, it is important to consider the potential impact of genetics on the emergence of certain traits and abilities in early human populations, and to be cautious in attributing these traits and abilities solely to interbreeding with Neanderthals and Denisovans.
Thank you for taking the time to consider this information.
    Sincerely,
    Robert Stephen Millar

I don't have any autoimmune deficiency, however, SARS-CoV-2 sticks to me like glue. I've just finished my sixteenth round of COVID-19. Does that seem strange? Why should it? In the last three years we have had that many variants come down the pike. Every one of them found me and made me sick. I am still sick from XBB.1.5. I picked it up two weeks ago in the grocery store. I was wearing a half-face 3M respirator. XBB.1.5 hit me so hard that I actually tested positive for the first time during this pandemic. I had a fever of four degrees F, and I felt like I had a knife stuck in my throat. Before that it was BQ.1, which I picked up in LAX at the end of October. BQ.1 gave me a backache so severe that on day three I had to walk around bent over. I'm not going to die or go to the hospital, but I'm tired of being sick. Here comes CH.1.1. Great.

Hang in there, @Roger. Some more prophylactic measures, since you are somehow especially susceptible: when you are out, try goggles to protect your eyes, a known, if rare, transmission route. Also, you can add a layer of internal antiviral protection by taking black cumin seed (chewed whole seed, or capsules of the powder), chased by honey water to improve the taste, or the supplement quercetin alongside zinc. Topically, you can clean your nostrils with hydrogen/peroxide-saturated cotton swabs, and you can gargle with medicated mouthwash, if you’ve been somewhere risky. Physically you can ventilate indoor premises (increase fresh air) and improve its filtration by switching to HEPA or MERV-13 or higher filters. air. Breathe through your nose for the additional antiviral effect of nitric oxide the nose produces.
Take care, and I hope you can avoid any more repeat infections.
