I disagree with you. The wife made the wrong decision. In as much ad I think her husband took things too far, it was evident that he over loved his wife. Things could have been sorted out in a different way. And if they don't work out, put a restraining order on him and seek for a divorce. If I were to be the man, I would have sued the hospital, the wife's friend, thereby letting her lose her job and career.
How do you talk to someone who chooses violence, control and abuse. You're very naive to think talking to each other could have improved the situation, perhaps him talking to a therapist would have but he chose violence instead.
