Ok so the book she was reading she thought was fictional so they displayed the made up image of the persons she had in her head. Now when she realized the book was based on her life and her friend’s life, they used the actual persons.

Base on my understanding scenes from the book Darn was reading (which she thought was fictional at first) were playing out. Therefore, different actors were used. But, when she finally got the proof that it was about Cory they used the same characters in the scene where he killed her.
I was annoyed by the use of different characters at first because I thought they was flash backs until I understood what was going on.
Good plot though.
