I applaud Tascam for bringing a 32-bit float recorder that allows for timecode in without having to go the Atomos Blue tooth route. I wish Deity would come up with something similar to this and the Zoom F3. I wonder about the 3.5mm "Camera / Line / Timecode out" port is going to work. Will it provide mic level / line level out AND Timecode out at the same time?
Ive emailed deity about this extensively. They very politely and professionally have addressed that they want to do this, but its out of their hands… and in zoom’s.
I've been avoiding the F3 forever due to timecode incompatibility with my workflow. I don't like bluetooth add-ons at all but over all I'll be picking up one of these for my camera rig.
As they said in the video: Tascam FR-AV2 has noise floor of EIN -127DB. F3 has EIN -128DB and D100 has EIN - 127DB So they are all on the same self noise level. (1db difference from F3 is basically unrecognizable)
Oh good it records in 24-bit also. Unless the menu on the screen was incorrect. I wonder if they are able to offer Bluetooth wireless monitoring because the patent held by another company doens't apply to bluetooth. Either way it's a welcome addition.
This is very interesting. How would I go about using one of these with a 2x R5C / C70 setup with timecode? I was hoping Deity would release a recorder like this.
Yes, it would be great if Deity released something like this. I don't know if you have the Deity TC-1 boxes, but if so, I think you can jam sync the timecode on this box, then run timecode to your C70 and MAYBE to the R5C (I am sorry that I don't know what timecode in options are available on the R5C). But apparently this Tascam recorder has an internal timecode clock, so maybe there is a way to "split" the timecode out between your different cameras? Sorry this isn't a very helpful reply.
@@marin_real_estate_photography R5C has the same timecode options as the C70, just takes a different cable. I don't own the TC-1s but have used them, but I also need a small audio device with full size XLRs. This is almost perfect for my needs, but I would just need another box from another brand to keep sync using the timecode generated by the Tascam. Feels bad to mix brands but it might be the cheapest solution.
Does the Tascam FR-AV2 have better preamps than the Portacapture H8? Which one do you recommend for use with a Nikon Z8 camera and multiple microphones indoors and outdoors? And what adapter would I need to mount it on the Z8? Thanks
I am recommending the Tascam FR-AV2 as it has the more compact form factor, lighter weight, formidable dynamic range, and arguably cleaner microphone preamps. Use this adapter to mount the recorder into the camera's accessory shoe: Revo Hot Shoe to 1/4"-20 Male Post Adapter B&H # RESACS14M: bhpho.to/4fakPlK >Mark

Per Tascam: The sound of wireless audio monitoring will be slightly delayed compared to the sound being recorded or played by the unit. The delay time could vary depending on the surrounding environment and radio wave conditions. The delay time is also affected by the QUALITY setting. The order from most to least is STABLE, STANDARD, PRIME. >Mark
The review did mention that both of the XLR ports can provide either 24 volt or 48 volt phantom power. Didn't mention battery life (although apparently it can be powered by a USB power pack). The price is $399 (in USD) for the unit itself, and an additional $59 for the bluetooth adapter.
It has a built-in timecode generator, and it seems like you can also Jam sync Timecode it if you are already using a legacy timecode system (and are not using the Atomos Bluetooth timecode system). I am not sure if the F3 has a 3.5mm mic input (it might, jsut don't know for sure). I don't know if the F3 has all of the "mixing" features that this unit has (Delay, Low Cut filter, Limiter, Compressor, four-band EQ, Noise Gate, Phase Inversion).
512GB is really the Thing worth emphasizing in 2024, not mentioning the f*** ~60 bucks Bluetooth dongle - f*** Tascam! (I'm not even pointing out different I/O sockets - uniformity 101)
Camera on board audio is still worthless good point granted it is there so how this system might be able to be integrated into the camera itself would be nice to know about as AI will be having a disruptive effect on both imaging and audio absolutely. *"voice assistants"* most famously represented by Apple Siri and Amazon Alexa is something the audio industry needs to pay close attention as being able to "intuit" what the end user wants and deliver that in advance of the end user knowing this is what The AI is all about. This is most easily recognizable I think the term be *"voice prompts"* which in theory could be delivered through the Bluetooth audio as possible here. Definitely agree needs wireless charging as do all Cameras now as none have that only cameras on the cell phone and this a huge problem for the entire Industry in particular the action camera GoPro and DJI. Audio in that sector is barely existing still there so huge market opportunity here absolutely 😊
Bluetooth ? What does Bluetooth mean ? It must be a premium feature for us to have to buy a Bluetooth separately. Can you update firmware, to allow recording of the XLR and line inputs simultaneously?
I was just about to get the Zoom F3. What are the selling points to get this one instead?
I think main reason some people don't like the F3 is it's 32 bit only, and often you don't need 32 bit, 24 gives you a faster workflow in post.
Timecode port!
Literally what stopped me getting the zoom f3 as a back up unit.
Does the FR-AV2 start recording when recording starts on the host camera?
The FR-AV2 will not start recording via a host camera recording trigger. >Mark
i feel like this would go perfect with the new Blackmagic Pyxis
Does it has touchscreen? Can you name or rename or tag recorded tracks/files on this recording device in the field during recording session?
The TASCAM FR-AV2 does not feature a touchscreen. Folders can be marked in the field. The folder name can be edited/renamed in the field. >Mark

Yes in the sense that it does what the F3 does but also a lot more things. So if you don't care about those things then get the cheaper F3.
