Violas can make such beautiful, deep sounds....I'm actually falling in love with this instrument, no matter how much others mock it, I still think it's beautiful!
I started playing viola really late; I’m 14 and I started in November. But honestly, this really inspires me. I will be able to play like this someday if I put all of my effort into learning the instrument.
Thank you very much for your kind words, Jovey - we're so pleased you enjoyed it! If you're anywhere near London on 1st June, you can hear him perform it live with us at the Royal Festival Hall - details here: www.philharmonia.co.uk/concerts/1622
Did I detect a little Bartok quote toward the end? Great player, great instrument. Thanks. Heard Power's recording of Bowen's second sonata last evening, never heard any of Bowen's music, and was blown away by his writing--and Power's playing. There are so many great, great English composers. Thanks, England!!
Esa-Pekka Salonen wrote this piece to precede the Bartók Viola Concerto, and he definitely quotes the piece. The note that goes with the composition can be found on the MusicSales website: www.musicsalesclassical.com/composer/work/54301 "I chose the famous black-key pentatonic passage from the first movement of Bartok’s Viola Concerto. Despite its obvious ear-worm qualities it is challenging technically, so I decided to write a piece that travels from the “negative” of the matrix of five black keys, i.e. from the five white keys C,D,F,G,A to the black keys Db,Eb,Gb,Ab,Bb through gradual transformation of the chord." - Esa-Pekka Salonen
I discovered from his site that he plays a viola made by Antonio Brensi circa 1610. Now if only I can discover what strings he uses on that instrument and their gauge - thin, medium or thick.
Larsen A, Pirastro Oliv D and G, Thomastik Spirocore Tungsten C. don't know the gauges though. (i always preferred the rigid oliv strings when i could stomach the price. lol. but that's just my experience.)
I was under the impression that Salonen wrote this in 2008 for a violist in the L.A. Philharmonic, Mick Wetzel. It was certainly performed back in 2008 by him. Why do you claim this was premiered in 2015?
Hi Abraham! Salonen wrote two versions of this piece - one in 2008, and this revised one in 2014. Though technically the 'same' piece, Esa-Pekka deemed the 2008 and 2014 versions different enough from each other for them to be classified separately
@@philharmonia_orchestra Do you know if the 2014 version has been published and if it can be purchased? I have bought the 2008 version (Chester) but I'd like to compare both!
Hello, Yes! This just became available to buy in 2018: www.musicroom.com/product-detail/product1137904/variant1137904/esa-pekka-salonen-pentatonic-etude-for-solo-viola/
I play viola, I'm now learning Brahms clarinet sonata no 1 and Reger viola suite no 1. I look at this and this is scary, both technically and harmonically. The only thing I can say is holy shit, I underestimated Lawrence Power.
Hello! We didn't actually record the Bartók for our channels. It looks as though Lawrence Power had recorded it, though, if you want to buy the album: www.hyperion-records.co.uk/a.asp?a=A83
Philharmonia Orchestra (London, UK) Thanks, but I already bought this recording. I was hoping to see a video of him playing this concert. It is such a pity that there aren't barely any videos of this fantastic violist (my favourite personaly, and one of the best of the world without a doubt)

We think so, too! A wonderful instrument.
I hear it as the MOST beautiful of ALL instruments.
This is so Metal

It’s not too late. I started playing one year ago and I’m 16, about to become 17
Started plaing double bass at 19) and it's ok
I started the violin at 44 and now thinking of moving to a viola at 48 :)
My teacher didn’t start playing cello until she was 18! Now it’s her job!
Go for your dream. YOU can do it!!!
This is probably my favorite performance of anything!

Thanks. Informative.
I heard it multiple times

Holy shit, if that's Schnitke Viola Concerto I still have a lot to play and learn
Woooooooooooooooooooow! No words...
Spectacular 🎻🎵
Wow!
This is incredible!
Sorry for not acknowledging Crawford-Phillips piano playing in the Bowen. Gorgeous!

Pirastro Olive works with old instruments, like this one.. But not sure will sound the same in a modern instrument...
Is there a bartok quote at the end there? Sounds like the viola concerto
You're correct! Good ear!

Interesting Bartok influences
Why this etude look like Bartok viola concerto?

Will you upload his Bartok Viola Concerto?

Specifically, what strings and rosin does he use and what is the make of his viola?
This is a Brenzi viola, from about 1590. We're not sure what strings and rosin he uses, but we'll see if we can find out.
Is this the 2008 version?
From reading other posts and comments, I am pretty sure it's the 2014 version.
quasi fantasia upon Bartoks Viola conc.
There's also schnittke 2nd movement in there
Where I can find a studio recording?
We are not aware that there is one.
beautiful performance on viola of otherwise dry academic music, BRAVO !
Want bartok? Here’s bartok on speed
Hey! Is the score available for purchase? It's a wonderful piece!
Hi Georges, unfortunately the Pentatonic Étude is not currently for sale.
get tim walden on the channel
3:32 sounds Greek
why is he playing on fire wood?
i,e, you don't like his particular viola ?
no violas are fire wood. unlike cellos
You keep using this word viola. It was found in a thesaurus with fire wood as a synonym
If that's how fire wood sound I'm burning all the doors in my house for my next viola ;)
He's playing on God wood.
*dictates* MWHAHAHAH
Not exactly the best possible choice for displaying the viola's beauty...
What is "the best possible choice" for displaying the viola's beauty???
Please enlighten us.
What's the point 😐
For you, there is no point.
