  • Episode 26. Harmony of the Spheres: A last lingering look back at mechanics to see new connections between old discoveries.
“The Mechanical Universe,” is a critically-acclaimed series of 52 thirty-minute videos covering the basic topics of an introductory university physics course.
Each program in the series opens and closes with Caltech Professor David Goodstein providing philosophical, historical and often humorous insight into the subject at hand while lecturing to his freshman physics class. The series contains hundreds of computer animation segments, created by Dr. James F. Blinn, as the primary tool of instruction. Dynamic location footage and historical re-creations are also used to stress the fact that science is a human endeavor.
The series was originally produced as a broadcast telecourse in 1985 by Caltech and Intelecom, Inc. with program funding from the Annenberg/CPB Project.
The online version of the series is sponsored by the Information Science and Technology initiative at Caltech. ist.caltech.edu

I watched this series early in the morning, before going to work, back in the mid 80's when it was presented on PBS. The CGI graphics, which seem so simple now, were revolutionary back then. Goodman's series is a masterpiece.

It would have been much more interesting if the "music of the spheres" would have been generated from a geocentric perspective. Not only would it result in more varied audio where especially retrograde motions would sound distinct, but it's also the perspective that the ancient coiners of the phrase "music of the spheres" had.

The only reason Aristotle used earth as a stable centre for his calculations was because he knew the results were more accurate than using the sun as the centre. For example, Aristarchus of Samos wasn't as accurate because he used an heliocentric model.

Music of the Spheres is like this...
Remeber that time you first realized that 8576309 was about a guy who found a number on the bathroom wall?
🤔 or maybe you didn't realize anything just like I didn't...
In music the fifths are 4152637 which is 28 so 10 so 1...in that order in the Circle of Fifths and the Major scale starts with the key of C that has no sharps or flats
but Jenny is the next octave up because 8576309 is 38 so 10 so 1 and says HI because zero is not a letter but 8 and 9 are...the number is the writing are the notes on the wall. You cant out wit music
Its the order of the classical names of the days related to their order in the classical planets, so:
      Moon 1 C Lunae - Monday
      Mercury 2 D Mercurii - Wednesday
      Venus 3 E Veneris - Friday
      Sun 4 F Solis - Sunday
      Mars 5 G Martis - Tuesday
      Jupiter 6 A Jovis - Thursday
      Saturn 7 B Saturni - Saturday
      So:
      Sun 4 F Solis - Sunday
      Moon 1 C Lunae - Monday
      Mars 5 G Martis - Tuesday
      Mercury 2 D Mercurii - Wednesday
      Jupiter 6 A Jovis - Thursday
      Venus 3 E Veneris - Friday
      Saturn 7 B Saturni - Saturday
      4152637
      FCGDAEB
FCGDAEB is the Circle of Fifths and the order of the weekdays and classical order of planets
BEAD are the first notes on the 7th fret of the guitar in standard western tuning right? And its a repetitive theme in the Circle of Fifths. Its one
I guess they thought Mercury was closer to us than Venus. Now relate that to the classical words of the days, look at the Latin, in english the week days except monday (moonday) were changed to germanic deities.
      And the 21 notes are 3 sets of 7. A-G, Ab-Gb and A#-Gb which is 777 so 21 so 3.

This is so annoying. Whoever put the Annenberg Media logo at the front of these videos really made a mistake. It throws the whole audio off the video. I have watched these lectures more than once, so I know there was not always this Annenberg Media introduction. Can someone please put it back to what it was?
