Thank you Ariel for visiting our beautiful city and being so full of praise. In common with Rome, Sheffield is built on seven hills which makes for a very interesting (and tiring when walking) topography - so much more interesting than cities built largely on the flat. Much of the city is rural with one third of the city actually within the Peak District National Park. And it is the only city in the UK that has a national park inside it's boundaries. Just outside those boundaries lie the Ladybower and Derwent dams, during the second world war, Lancaster aircraft of 617 Sqn RAF used Derwent dam to practice attacking a dam in preparation for their Dambuster raid in Germany. In the city, places to visit include the Victoria Quay, the Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet and the Kelham Island Museum - a museum focusing on the industrial heritage of the city. If you have a shopping itch that needs scratching, then there's the Meadowhall Centre - a tram will take you all the way there. We hope you enjoyed your time with us, and that one day you'll return.

I lived in Crookes a couple of years, felt very urban, but at the same time a ten minute walk would take you to the countryside. Not much greenery in the centre but some of the Western suburbs seemed so lush, more like a forest with occasional houses.

This was my favorite overseas livestream ever. I saw the second half live and just watched the first half. Loved the churches and the opera. Food for the soul. Loved seeing everyday people in a very nice town. Nothing fancy smancy. Even what went wrong for you on the second half, you made right. You're really good at this. I wish you much luck. I'm in my 70s. Never got to travel. Thank you.

Missed most of the livestream, so catching up now. Know Sheffield a little as my brother did his PhD here. I have to say i was surprised when we first visited by how much nicer it is than what i had expected. the winter garden is fabulous and i have one of my favourite family photos taken in there.

I live not very far from Sheffield. Sheffield is the most underrated & friendliest city in the UK. It might not have the trendy fashionable shops of Manchester & London but it has some amazing independent businesses usually away from the centre. I lived in Manchester as a student with everything it has to offer & still prefer Sheffield.

How nice to see Sheffield! So glad you enjoyed it and the weather treated you kindly(it's been dark and heaving it down for the past few days). Sadly missed you live as I was out planting in the garden. Always fascinating to see a place from someone else's perspective as you very easily take things for granted when you're just getting from a to B. Glad to hear you watch Geoff Marshall too!

Very interesting commentary here. If you were searching for Sheffield videos on TH-cam I’m surprised you didn’t find many…including my own very amateurish channel.😊
It was quite frustrating watching you wander around aimlessly, missing some of the city’s most important cultural attractions although it’s good you got to see our two lovely cathedrals. The oldest part of the Anglican cathedral goes back to around 1200CE.
Kelham Island is very much overrated with lots of cheap industrial boring looking modern building not doing justice to the area where the cutlery industry in the city began. Unfortunately you wandered through that area rather than the older part around Ball Street bridge which was slightly to the left after you crossed the road from the tram. Also you missed the gem in the area which is Kelham Island Industrial Museum which has the tall chimney. It’s free and there are some really impressive displays unique to the city. See my video on the Kelham steam engine!
Unfortunately your thesis about why Sheffield is spread out is nonsense! It has nothing to do with nuclear war. Sheffield grew along its rivers as they were the only source of power before electricity and steam power was invented.. Communities then grew up around these water powered mills along the rivers such as the Rivelin, Loxley, Porter, Don and Sheaf (which gave Sheffield its name) and people would work in the mills in winter when the river flows were higher providing more power, then work on the land in the summer. So we’re talking about the 1500s to mid 1700s.
If you ever decide to revisit, please give me a shout and I’ll be more than happy to show you around. I may even forgive your comment about Hendo’s!😳😬😃

Hi Ariel, love the tours of U.K., I have been catching most of them in replay. I wanted to ask; will you be visiting York, England? There's a beautiful historic district there and a street called "The Shambles," that I think might interest you.

Sheffield FC is something you might want to look up. Also look up who invented football and stainless Steel. The White House even has Sheffield cutlery. (Especially known for the Blades). Bassline/speed garage music was invented just on the skirts of Sheffield. But Sheffield is its home. (Niche nightclub). Sheffield was the first place in England to play blue grass from the states. If you can't tell. I'm from there/here. Full monty doesn't mean dancing naked. It means 'everything'. Hence why you can get a full monty. Which is a full English breakfast. To do the full monty. You could be faced with anything. And someone from Sheffield is called a Sheffieldier. Or just Sheffield lad/lass. Pittsburg is twinned with Sheffield. Both cities have teams called the Steelers. One American football and the other ice hockey. When someone asks you if your from here? They mean are you living there. They will have noticed your accent. (In Sheffield anyways). Some areas in Sheffield you definitely don't go to unless you know someone. Most areas you need to keep your wits about you. City centre your relatively safe in the day. Night time is just any other city. But if you're not local, ask a few people which pubs/bars/nightclubs are the safest. I'm surprised non of them told you to get some Hendersons relish (Hendo's) while you was there. Or on the live chat. Think as wostershire sauce but better.
