'TV Eye' Correspondent Julian Manyon returns to the border between Cambodia and Thailand to discover the plight of 1700 Cambodian refugees who fled the Khmer Rouge only to be sent back across the border by the Thai military.

My family and I got sent back to Cambodia. That day the camp was closed to the UN workers. They made us get on the bus and drove us for many hours and then dropped us off and told us to walk back to Cambodia. The Thai soldiers lined up to make sure that we walk back. As the people walked back into Cambodia the first wave of people stepped on the land minds and got blown up. We were lucky because we were not the first few buses.
It was very hard to watch. What a hard life many Cambodians went through. Thanks god that there are survivors and can tell the atrocities that the Khmer Rouge have done to a very beautiful country.
I totally believe you. Doctor Haing Ngor mentioned that the Thai army did that a couple of times, unfortunately. Shame on them for treating refugees like this and sending them to hell on Earth all over again. 40+ years later, how have you been doing ? 😢
That's why some Khmer dislikes heartless Thai soldiers and promised not to step in Thailand forever.
19 ตุลาคม พ.ศ.2522 นายกรัฐมนตรีไทย พล.อ.เกรียงศักดิ์ ชมะนันทน์ ได้ออกนโยบาย “เปิดประตู” แสดงออกถึงมนุษยธรรม อนุญาตให้ผู้ลี้ภัยชาวกัมพูชาข้ามพรมแดนได้อย่างปลอดภัยและอาศัยอยู่ในสถานที่เฉพาะ
ข้อมูลที่ฝรั่งบันทึกไว้แบบนึกไม่ถึง… ถึงแม้จะเป็นโรงเรือนนอนรวมกันเป็นกลุ่มก้อน …ในเดือนธันวาคม พ.ศ.2524 มีเด็กเกิดใหม่ในค่ายนี้ 2,323 คน (เด็กที่เกิดในปีโน้น ปัจจุบัน พ.ศ.2564 ก็จะอายุ 40 ปี) ป่านนี้กระจายกันอยู่ทั่วโลก รวมทั้งกลับไปกัมพูชา
พวกที่มาทางบก คือ คนที่ถูกปล้น ถูกข่มขืน รอนแรมมาในป่า (เดินถนนไม่ได้-หลบการจับกุม สังหาร) ป่วยไข้มาทั้งสิ้น มาลาเรีย อุจจาระร่วงอย่างแรง ขาดอาหาร ซึ่งผู้เขียนก็เคยเผชิญกับคลื่นมนุษย์เหล่านี้ ทหารไทยที่อยู่ตามแนวตัวเลขที่ถูกบันทึกไว้เป็นประวัติศสาสตร์ คือ มีพี่น้องชาวกัมพูชาเข้ามา-หมุนออกไป ประมาณ 200,000 คน
บางคนก็สมัครใจ ขอกลับไปกัมพูชาเมื่อสงครามยุติลง
คนเยอะเป็นแสน การบริหารจัดการ อาหาร น้ำ เป็นเรื่องที่ชุลมุนไม่น้อย เจ้าหน้าที่จะทำทะเบียนครอบครัว นับจำนวนคน แล้วแบ่งอาหารตามจำนวนหัว เรื่องการมั่ว หมกเม็ด โกงยอดคน เกิดขึ้นไม่เว้นแต่ละวันชายแดนมีมนุษยธรรม ดูแล ให้ข้าว ให้น้ำ รักษาพยาบาล

Honestly, I don't know much about the actual situation at that time. Nonetheless, I genuinely empathize with and feel sorry for the innocent Cambodian people who sought refuge in another country. As a Thai citizen, I'm also ashamed of the Thai authorities and the government for not taking a stand to protect civilian lives.
I was born in Thailand but as a child of Cambodian refugees they discriminate me and won't grant my Thai citizenship. Why?

@@joyp5093 You got your Thai citizenship? How? I was born in Surin refugee camp in Thailand BUT my ancestors are all from Surin, Thailand originally. My great grandparents are Surin people but they moved with their children to lived on the Cambodian side during the 1920's. Some of their children were born in Cambodia. The third oldest child of theirs was my grandma. She was also born in Surin Thailand. My grandfather was born in Oddar Meanchey. My Grandparents met each other there and my mother was born in Oddar Oddar Meanchey. My whole family and ancestors lived in Cambodia for a period of only 40 years until the Khmer Rouge disrupted the country and we fled again back to Thailand as refugees where I was born. In reality, if I go through the "Thai blood law" am technically a Thai. It's hard for me to prove my ancestry because back then in the early 1900's or late 1800's in Surin there was no computers, documentations, records, certificates, and such. I haven't try to apply for Thai citizenship yet. If you know how the process works let me know please. Thank you. 🙏❤🇹🇭

@@joyp5093I haven't try to apply for it yet. I was born in Surin Site B refugee camp but my whole ancestors from my Mothers side originated from Surin, Thailand. Only my mom and her siblings were born in Cambodia.
Cambodia was virtually Cold War purgatory during the 1980s, trapped in geopolitical stalemate between Vietnam (backed by the Eastern Bloc), China, and Thailand (backed by the West and China).
Thanks for putting this video up. I think my family and I were part of this 1,700 the Thai military sent us back to Cambodia. I don’t remember much as I was a young child but I remember a long bus trip, when we got dropped off, there was no water, very little food and people were trying to walk back up the mountain instead of going down the mountain, the Thai soldiers shot them. I also saw injured people from stepping on mines. Our family was very lucky to survive the journey as I remember it took us many days to walk down the mountain very slowly as there were mines. My parents thought I wouldn’t survived as I had measles and was very sick when we were in the mountain.
I’m was there in 1979. Very sad memories 😢

It was so bad. My husband was born in Site 2. Then, he was a victim of an illegal adoption network and was mistreated all his life by an adoptive mother who never legally adopted him. And we have no hope to ever find his biological family or clear up how he could be smuggled to our country...

Thai authorities have no hearts during that’s time thousands and thousands of Khmer refugees were killed and displaced from Cambodia. When’s I saw this video makes me grieve and cry because I am one of those people who asks for help.😢😢😢

I’m also a child of a genocides survivors my mother was a single mom with 6 children all under 12 years of ages , my father were separated during the bombardment kick in , we walk night and days on bare feet , I saw corpses all around during our deserts and jungle roads , I’ve been in Thai refugee camp it’s a nightmare almost every night some of us got sexual abuse by its Thai militaries they are cold blood since ancient Khmer Empire histories , Thai stole our Khmer territories since centuries . They are an expert at misleading, thieves and distorted the truth . Every time I’ve watch this it give me chills , like PTSD from my past we had so much a beautiful and frugal lives before the Khmer Rouge happen. Just by listening the interview from the Thai officers it’s like listening to an evil doers no remorse no compassion for humanity reason. Send my utmost respect to all the medicals professionals teams. Thank you and thank you for all you do to saves us Khmers people in time of death!!! 😔😭🙏🇰🇭🌎💜🌎🙏😭😭😭🙏

It is heart broken to hear the thai authority denied that the Cambodians who run away from war inside Cambodia are refugees.They said the Cambodians are illegal immigrants that should be sent back to Cambodia. Thai kings and its people never extended friendship toward Cambodians when the mostly needed helps. The thai kings and its people never Cambodians. The thai however copies khmer language and scripts. Thai developed their Alphabet that was based on the Khmer writing system.

What is there to see? Khmer Rouge were opportunists, they sided with the Soviet Union and Vietnam because having a two front war with Imperialists and Communists is not very logical, so when they saw Communists won they sided with the Imperialists, America in order to expand their territory and power.
Vietnam did not approve of Khmer Rouge going around killing Vietnamese people near the border so war was inevitable.
Its kind of funny that Pol Pot received American weapons, yet he is supposed to be a "Communist" but had American economy advisors LOL.
