Note: This ride is a storytelling with animatronic puppets of how Shrek & Fiona met. Hence why the animatronics throughout the ride looks like puppets.
Yes, I get they did terribly.
Just an excuse to make cheap barely animatronics. The opening & closing scenes don't look any better.

Scenes either spin around or they show scenes from the movie. Cheap, lazy. Hope people don't pay a lot for this junk.
This whole ride reminds me of the classic writing “happy birthday” on a poster, you start each word off huge and can barley fit the ending of the word in.
That's the perfect way to describe it, honestly.

What I didn't like, as well as everything already mentioned, was the second car almost always missed out on the movement of the 'puppets'. By the time their car arrived the animation had finished and they were just looking at static figures.

Big agree, went on Shrek 4D for the first time in my life a few weeks ago and was disappointed with it, the movie is so iconic/such a big meme and they gave it such crap...

Why it is called a "trackless ride? A true trackless ride doesn´t have any lines on the floor, like ratatouille in Paris or Winnie the Pooh in Japan.

but disney's trackless rides have ride vehicles that have batteries in them so they have to recharge/replace them often
There's so much wasted real estate in this ride! It looks like they only put in the bare minimum to get across the story.

That's really weird. They seems like they really tried to tell most of the story and then had to cut out a lot of important parts because they were running out of room. Why did the castle rescue scene take so long but there was no tournament? Why did we all of a sudden just end up almost right in the wedding? Why did the swamp scene seem to take so long? Why was there no All Star? This sounds like a great concept. Who doesn't want a Shrek dark ride? However, really poor execution... and why was it a puppet show instead of just a story?
Easier to make cheaply made animatronics rather than maintaining complex ones that need to be maintenenced always.

@@Emiltonin Actually, as odd as this is, and how much I just sort of bashed it, I will say that I would take this over Shrek 4D. I would love to see a dark ride at Universal about Shrek (or... really anything else). The first time I went on Shrek 4D, I think I was more dumbfounded about that than this. All I remember from it is Donkey sneezing on you, which is really freaking disgusting, the seats moved slightly, and the pre-show was actually a little funny - it almost reminded me a little of Medieval Times in the castle. I like dark rides a lot because physical set pieces, even bad ones, are more interesting to look at than screens, especially in a theme park. So, yeah, I think this is much better than Shrek 4D... but then again, anything is better than Shrek 4D. I think the technology is put to much better use on something like Minion Mayhem or The Simpsons Ride.
I don't mind that they were made to look like puppets. I actually think that was pretty cute. But I did miss All Star here and I noticed a LOT of unused space, PLUS exposed track. Not very good... Shrek deserves way better treatment.

Okay, I've watched a lot of dark ride ride-throughs of these Dubai parks and I have to say -- this is one of the BETTER ones. Yes, a lot of wasted real estate, but I like that there was a narrative idea that made the ride unique (Shrek and Fiona putting on a puppet show, and then the majority of the ride is us going through a large version of that puppet show). For a Dubai ride, there was a lot of character movement. It's like they took someone who was an assistant to a Disney Imagineer and made that person their rides director. On the surface, it looks like something that would be at a Disney Park.... just not quite as good.
You have to keep in mind that Dubai’s distance from the Disney and Universal parks makes this the quality standard (along with IMG, Ferrari Land, Warner Brothers World etc)
Sooo much empty space and those are some weirdly slow and motionless puppets...
This ride is really cool. It's like actually being in the movie. I would love to be able to go on this.

That ride was way too creepy. Not a fan of the creepy wood carved puppets. The animatronics barely moved. Also an 8min ride? That dark ride theater seems way large. They would never waste that much space at a US them park just for one ride.
I honestly wouldn't mind it if they did... I enjoy long rides when they tell stories. This one, however, DOES seem bare. I'm not even a fan of Shrek anymore and I'll sit here and argue Shrek deserves better than this.
Now that you mention wooden puppets...ITS A LAYERED WORLD AFTER ALL!(small world)
I know many Dark Rides around the world that are around 7/8 mins long, + the indoor sections were large like for Example: The Pirates of Batavia" at Europa Park in Germany-Very large Area but every part of it was themed, Very good animatronics, Special effects, Set Design, etc -One of my fav Dark Rides of all time

@@mikekaraoke I know it's like Haunted Mansion in DisneyWorld Orlando. They need more crazy rides than this one. Who ever created this ride did horrible. It could've been more like a water ride or like a better 3D ride like Transformers and Spiderman
Is this a "Dark Ride" with the lights on? It seems so bright... you can see all of the things you aren't supposed to on a dark ride.

A dark ride is a car or boat or whatever taking you through different scenes. It does not per se have to be very dark
They use a camera that is low light so it picks up more than the human eye
I agree with everyone that say the ride is lacking but it’s super cool how it’s ~8 minutes long compared to disneyland’s 2 minute rides
I apologize in advance for possible errors in the text, I am from Kazakhstan and write mainly in Russian, but after translating your text I was a little indignant, A lot of the Disneyland rides are really fast, but they make up for it with good animatronics or something. But I think that all trips are beautiful in their own way, and the fact that trips to motion gate are also beautiful good in their own way, but Disneyland is underestimated , All these good trips have only one thing, the emotion of happiness and immersion, although many comments write that they are dissatisfied with the trip, but I didn’t notice all this when I was driving along this road, so I really I think that you can’t compare trips and talk about their weaknesses, because they are unique in their own way :)

Those are some lazy animatronics. Trying to cover poor animatronics by making them look like marionettes so the strings could make sense.

Pandora Animal kingdom is horrible, same as the Star Wars Park. Attendance of Disney California is down due to Star Wars (just google and you’ll find it in the news). Toy story ride in Hollywood studios. No, only Disney fanatics still think it’s fantastic. But realistically, the quality has gone down and prices went up.
dontbecrazy15 there is no stars wars park, just a themed land. animal kingdom is great and pandora is literally revolutionary. disney california wasn’t a complete success from day 1 so of course a huge ip would draw away from it gtfo
I think this ride was actually really nicely done. I mean it’s no Disneyland but it all has a plot and is easily followed. The animatronics were also well done.
This is an old ride kiddie ride.
Universal rides are overall better than the rides at Disneyland. This Shrek ride is similar to the dated rides at Magic Kingdom (Pirates, Haunted Mansion, It's A Small World, Little Mermaid)...all a snoozefest 😂.
Regardless of the comments, I thought this was quite well done. Granted it was a bit empty and it could do with more BUT it told a story had an interesting split track system at certain points and you wasn't rushed through (while some of disney rides may look better, they are also much shorter and you are rushed through the story).
Thry could've surely upped the speed on some parts though. Escaping a burning castle at a slow pase isn't exactly an exciting thing.

If you're going to make a ride of a beloved franchise, go all in or not at all. Not half way, like this ride apparently is. I know you may not have a lot of money to invest right now, but it's worth it.

interesting they went with the puppet look so they can use simple looking and moving animatronics and they will not have to replace latex over time (except the ones in the first and last scene)
Surprising they got Dean Edwards to reprise Donkey from Scared Shrekless. Michael Gough reprising his role as Shrek from other media was an obvious surprise.

I wonder what changes and updates would be made if it was built at Universal. It’s a long dark ride, which was neat, but I feel like they could have done more with each scene and the animatronics.

Benji Smith I think the 'track' is there because of the constant wear and tear from the heavy ride vehicles wheels. If they're always going in the same area every day for the entirety of park hours, there's probs gonna be some damage to the floor. Most trackless rides actually spend money to get floors that won't do that, but uh. **cough** -clearly this ride has some serious issues involving spending money for quality things- **cough**

This is so far the best one I’ve seen and they actually utilize the space unlike the other rides where there is too much open space
When motiongate’s main success is by making attractions with as little motion as possible
I feel like they plan the show but don’t plan the amount of space it will actually take. They build these huge buildings with huge spaces but the scenes are so simple with barely anything going on so it looks so empty. Same with all of the other rides they have done.

This only proves that without question Disney is the Ruling Monarch of dark rides. Especially trackless. In all Disney trackless rides you never see the tracks in the floor which adds to the magic of a mysteriously moving ride. You don't know where your ride is taking you. That's part of the fun.This is just pathetic. Put together by people who had a vague concept of what these dark rides are all about. Also put together by people who simply don't have a lot of money. As someone else pointed out there is just way too much wasted space. Loooooong rooms filled with the bare minimum. And just cheap looking. I'd be embarrassed! Also, too much dialogue going on. People don't have the attention span to listen to that story. I didn't even catch the whole thing because you don't care about what they're saying as much as seeing what's going on around you.
If you go there, I suggest skipping this mess.

Efteling's new rides are giving Disney a run for their money. Though Efteling doesn't have over 12 theme parks around the world...
i mean i get the critique of it seeming empty but I think it actually for what it is looks pretty good, and i appreciate animatronics over just a bunch of screens across rooms.
There are dark rides that look full, immersive, and lived-in without screens. I'd say screens would actually be a negative that looks just as empty.
I don't think people realize how much work it is to make these.
