- Great Britain invaded Afghanistan in 1838. It wanted to reinstall Shah Shuja Durrani, a grandson of Ahmad Shah Abdali, as the king of Afghanistan. The British expeditionary force was dubbed the Army of the Indus. The British wanted to oust the then Afghan Emir, Dost Mohammad, and make Afghanistan a buffer state between India and the Tsar Empire of Russia. Maharaja Ranjit Singh denied the British the safe route to invade Afghanistan. However the Khan of Kalat, Mir Mahrab Khan and the Emirs of Sidh allowed them to do so. Thank you Faisal Bhai for Highlighting Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s role in this. Had he given the Britishers an easy route and shorter supply lines then the tide of History could’ve been different. Anyway he did the right thing in not letting his land for an attack on a sovereign land
They would not have won even if he would have given them the route

Maybe but Military supply lines matter a lot. The British lost half their forces at Bolan pass only. I am not saying that the British would’ve been able to maintain their control because Shah Shuja was not a strong leader but they definitely would’ve had an easy first time attack

He was a smart ruler who had a treaty with the British to maintain his rule in Punjab. Had he been a puppet then his kingdom would’nt have survived like Patiala and Bahawalpur. He was probably the only person in History after the Mauryas who crossed the Indus towards the west and captured almost 1/3rd of the Durrani Empire. He captured Peshawar and Khyber pass and stopped the invasions into India since then. Had he been a puppet then he would’ve given the British easy passage as well as forces and bases to fight the Afghans and we all know who did that in modern history. If you still don’t understand then I must take you back to post 9/11. That is what a puppet does. A puppet does drone bombings on their own people

With the fall of Mughal, Kabul changed hands...
Eventually falling under British Empire, who kept it as their Vassel State...
It was not untill USSR invaded and captured Afghanistan in less than 50 hours in latw 70s, and Afghans were glamorized and stories of their gallant past was fabricated with the help of USDs...
For the notion that no one can control Afghan land...
Afghanistan belonged to Mughals, and before them to Temorids, before them It was part of Khawarzam Shahi, before that, Turkic Rulers of Ghazni and Ghorids... All these Sultantes Died out eventually!!!
