It's funny because Natarle did so much more as Murrue's first mate and second-in-command than when she was at the helm of her own ship. It's probably because of Azrael's micro-managing nature. Had Azrael not been there, who knows? Maybe Murrue would have been able to talk Natarle into joining them. Btw, in one of the GBA SEED Games "Tomo to Kimi to Koko de", it's possible for the player to save both Natarle and Mu. There is a scenario when the Archangel is in ORB where you are given the option to play cupid between Ensign Neumann and Natarle. If the scenario is successful, Natarle first warns Murrue of the Dominion's next move and evacuates the Dominion. Without anyone else with him in the bridge, Azrael was powerless and so he couldn't fire the Lohengrin at the Archangel, saving Mu's life. Murrue then fires the Lohengrin at the Dominion, killing Azrael as the Archangel picks up Natarle's life pod.
@Wing Zero1986 What hurts the most about this scene for me, is that while I am happy that Muruta Azrael got what he freaken deserved......I feel so awful for Natarle....and Murrue.....Natarle for having to die, and Murrue....who for all she knows just lost Mu for good and also wont ever know what really happened on the bridge of the Dominion and how Natarle actually fought for Murrue's side in the end and likely feels like Natarle, a friend, just betrayed her in the worst way possible. I say she wont ever know because if I am not mistaken, none of the Dominion's Lifepods made it to the Archangel, especially not Flay's Lifepod.....so unless there were survivors of the Dominion who could tell the Archangel crew of the heroics of Natarle.....the Archangel crew has no way of knowing.....and for all they know Natarle was the one who gave the order to fire the Dominion's Lohengrin that killed Mu La Flaga instead of destroying the Archangel. The ONE bit of evidence that can suggest that Natarle helped them in the end, was when the Dominion's crew was abandoning ship, so even if none of the Dominion crew survived, this is the one thing that can tell the Archangel crew that something was up aboard the Dominion. Still I feel so bad for both Murrue and Natarle.

Sutherland's death at 16:00 was so satisfying. He knew Zaft was going to attack the base in Alaska and used the Archangel and several of their forces as bait.
And Yzak, who was part of the attacking ZAFT force, would very well have been one of those killed had Kira not been there. Very poetic that one of those that escaped death at JOSH-A is the one to deal the final blow on the madman responsible for the tragedy.
SEED was my first "real" anime I watched as a kid when it was still relatively new. I don't think I was even in middle school yet. The scenes of Genesis irradiating all those people until they popped stuck with me and was the most violent thing I'd ever seen back then. It still strikes me as an incredibly brutal idea even in abstraction, especially with how quickly it happens. It really helped the final act drive the show's overall message home.
Rewatching Seed years later and I'm reminded of Yzak the GOAT, him and the Duel having the highest kill count for named important characters. Really well deserved promotion.

Even at it's time, these episodes were rock solid intense. Truly worthy of A Baoa Qu levels of intensity.

The light from the explosions of nukes aimed at the PLANT that was destroyed by METEOR full burst were what made him decide to join the Three Ships Alliance, which is how he ended up saving Cagalli. He has held such high regards to the METEORs that it will be also play a symbolic role to him in Destiny and onwards.
I would have to agree with this tho ngl, I was glad that he turned out to be alive. He was my 2nd favorite character in this series and it really bummed me out that he died and it took weeks for me to move on. Haha
Seen this scene a lot of times, I lost count. When I first saw this as a kid, it broke me. Mu was a character I liked and it was just as shocking as it was heroic for him to go out that way. So when I saw him replicate this selflessness in Destiny, I was really happy with how it turned out. Za Warudo really made the difference here tho.

Calamity probably went out in the second most overkill way in the series. Jumped on by two of the most powerful suits jacked up with METEOR units. First most overkill is Providence for getting shanked through the cockpit then blasted point blank range by an exploding GENESIS.

I kind of hate that those Astray pilots got killed so randomly by grunts. I know they're not ace pilots, but they deserved better. If they were going to get killed off, they could have at least gotten killed trying to take out the Calamity or Forbidden.
Imagine if they did get to live and appear in SEED Destiny? They could have become ace pilots and be seen as, outside of Cagalli, Orb's greatest protectors while piloting customized Murasame mobile suits.

It's really annoying by this point. I honestly believe it was entirely appropriate here; it would've been more impactful had they not recycled most of these scenes so much prior to it. Especially because we get to see Lacus go Seed mode.

same reason when you microwave a sausage, it will burst. The "beam" Genesis fires is gamma ray radiation, which somehow boils the water in the human body. When liquid transition into a gaseous state, it expands, hence the ballooning and explosion. To be frank though, I don't think gamma ray would do this. With that kind of high energy emission, the whole body would have disintegrated, not just popping like a balloon
Long story short, they're literally microwaved to death; just put in a bag filled with water and you'll see what happens to the human body hit with a similar effect.

Seen this scene a lot of times, I lost count. When I first saw this as a kid, it broke me. Mu was a character I liked and it was just as shocking as it was heroic for him to go out that way. So when I saw him replicate this selflessness in Destiny, I was really happy with how it turned out.

The "beam" Genesis fires is gamma ray radiation, which somehow boils the water in the human body. When liquid transition into a gaseous state, it expands, hence the ballooning and explosion.
To be frank though, I don't think gamma ray would do this. With that kind of high energy emission, the whole body would have disintegrated, not just popping like a balloon
Long story short, they're literally microwaved to death; just put in a bag filled with water and you'll see what happens to the human body hit with a similar effect.

- truly care for the crew like it's her family
