Train Travel In Italy - My life in Italy

- Train travel in Italy is one of those experiences many people opt for during a trip to Italy but for many who live in Italy, traveling by train can be necessary. In this video, we'll cover a little bit about how to take the train in the country and what happens if you have a delayed train and miss your connection. Train travel can be an enjoyable experience if you know what you're getting yourself into ahead of time and not let yourself get stressed. I can for sure recommend getting around Italy by train because it will allow you to see so much more up close than flying over it all.

Traveling by train is the best way to explore a territory, all over the world.
Let alone Italy.
Crossing Tuscany by train is an experience everybody should live.
These videos are super useful. Thanks for making them!
Glad they are helpful 😁
Thanks for coming to check them out 😁
I subscribed your channel. Your videos discuss rea lifel practical scenarios us expats face. That's super useful. And your presentation is great. Keep up the good work!
We took a train from Zürich to Verona and then back on our last trip to Italy and the views outside were so stunning! We had a crazy time with some delays at Milano Centrale, but super helpful workers sorted it out. Thanks for sharing realistic scenarios which are really helpful!
I’ve done the ride from Milan to Zurich before, an absolutely gorgeous ride! It’s been such a long time since I’ve done it, can’t wait to do it again! ^_^
I was really impressed by how helpful some of the staff were. I was actually a little worried it would be a headache, but waiting in-line for about 10 minutes was the worst and longest part of the process haha
Would love to see a video of you speaking Italian with one of your friends.
Hey Rafael! Those train stations look like an airport here in the states!!! The last train you were on is really AWESOME!!!! Multi level...so cool! The views are amazing 😍😍😍!!! Thank you! From CT 😄
Italian trains are wonderful especially the speed train between Rome and Florence.
Hey there Sabra!
It looks awsome but I have to say it felt so cramped on that train haha
and even more annoying when you have a suitcase like I did to try and bring in up the steep stairs haha..
@Big Small_Travel I'm assuming it was a Freccerossa or Frecceargento train? Those are my favorite types of trains! If the price difference isn't so much between one of those and a regular train I'll opt for one of those, much nicer experience overall.
Rafael, haha it did look a bit cramped... I would have left my suitcase at the bottom of the stairs 😂😄. Ok I would have pretended to be wonder woman 😂😂😂
@BigSmall_Travel, that sounds so awesome! I hope I can take a ride on an Italian train! It sounds better than Amtrak here in the states
sabra black be careful while traveling anywhere! Never let your bags out of your sight! Unfortunately this is the world we live in. Also these trains in particular have the stairs by the door.. wouldn’t be hard for one to disappear. But that’s not just something I’d ward about for only this country.
I remember Bolzano Stazione! I remember it was hard to find a restroom there. I almost always buy my tickets through Trenitalia or Italo websites. Then I don’t have to worry about lines or validating my ticket. But one needs a mobile internet connection for that.
For which binario, you can use the paper posters listing all the train arrivals and departures at the station to look it up (you look under the departure time on the poster for your train number and it shows the binario it usually uses). If you want, the next time I’m at the station here in VdA, I can make a short video explaining it, which you can use or not however you decide.
Hey there Steve,
haha the next time you're in Bolzano the bathroom that's easiest to find is underground by the elevator.
Thanks for the offer! No need to worry about it, I'm usually at the station in Bolzano once per week, I"ll try to remember to include that in a future train video. this won't be the only one ;)
Rafael Di Furia Okay no probs! The offer is there, just in case. It’s only a half hour walk to the station in Chatillon. Great vids, by the way!
Bologna is often overlooked, but gotta love it - la Dotta, la Rossa, la Grassa ❤️
I was hopping to hear from you on this video about Bologna! Always great to have the opinion of a native, where in bologna do you think is worth checking out?
I'd love to do a video on it this summer!
Really looking forward to my own train trips ones that side and getting excited about making a life in Italy
Scared but excited
Especially at my age
And
Leaving the comfort life I have here
But
We only live ones!!!
Thanks for the great Info Rafael! .. D
Hey Darrell, thank's for coming to check out the video!
I loved Bolgna. One of my favorite places.
I don't want to sound fussy but the late train was an Austrian train and it was coming in late from Austria.
You are right, that’s why I put the quick note up on the screen when I first said german.
But also it’s a habit I’ve gotten into. Here where I live even thought the local speakers of German are from here and more Austrian and even Austrians are often called German because of the shared language.
Also even though it went through Austria it was coming from Germany
Rafael, for tickets bought on-line and printed at home is it necessary to validate at the station before boarding the train? Thanks!
I have traveled a little bit on trains in Italy and understand that you have to validate your ticket, ( if you reserve a train with a seat number, it is not required as the reservation is enough at least on the train I reserved ). But Ci sono due cose che vorrei sapere. If I am going on a train let's say 9:00 in the morning, could I purchase it the night before and validate it the next day prior to boarding? The second thing I would like to know, is if the trains In Italy have zones, for example, if the cost is the same, could I get a ticket travelling 5 stations and then get off anytime I wanted?
You were fortunate to have the club car to yourself...auguri!
It was a fun experience 😁
You are so funny with your reaction to the coffee. Thank you for filming the scenery, looks beautiful! Do the trains have WiFi? I’m assuming that the trains aren’t normally so behind schedule...right? You had a positive attitude about being so late. That would drive me crazy. I can’t. Did the temperature change some as you journeyed south?
Amazing video!! Thank you for sharing it ✈️
Isn't there a trenitalia app where you can look up if the train is late, from which platform it leaves and further information?
EC = Euro City, means it connects major cities within Europe
IC = inter City, means it's a domestic train connects major cities within the country
You're absolutely right!
I just don't particularly like the app.
although it's been a while since I've used it... may need to try it again
You really make my weeks. Hope all your trAvels are smooth and beautiful. Espresso and cappuccinos in Minturno are around €1.50.
Aww thank you Jeanne for your kind words ^_^
Very sweet of you to say ^_^
Enjoy your cheap espressos and cappuccinos! haha
Since being back in Alto Adige I haven't been out for coffee once!
My mother (her father was Sicilian) she a always carried a thermos of coffee ,steak knife and a book in her car. Now watching this I comprehend why she did it.
For the train info you can see on the Trenitalia App
Yes you are correct ^_^
Hey Rafael thxs I just was wondering if it makes sense if I start a martial arts business in Italy sorry for my Italian being bad I'm learning thxs best wishes
Trains between Bologna and Bolzano/Brennero /Austria/Munich are usually on time or not too late, you 've been really unlucky in that case
Another great video! I really wish there was something like this when I took my first trip to Italy in 2014. I’ve taken trains quite a bit across central Italy, and I didn’t know that you could google the train number, station, and platform to get the platform number you’ll be departing from! That I’ll be super helpful for me this fall. That really got my excited to finally come long term! 🇮🇹😊🚉
Also, yes, I’d love to see a “what can 5€ get you” type video! PS: Kebabs 🥙 are my favorite street food there, and I totally can’t wait to have one when I arrive August 22nd.
And, I was shocked when you said how much coffee ☕️ was up in your area! During my stays in central Italy I’ve paid between 0.70-1.20€ for espresso, and 1.50-3€ for cappuccino
Hey there Anthony! Thank you glad you enjoyed the video!
One thing I forgot to mention is that this info can also be found on the TrenItalia App, but it only shows info for trains in their system and not ItaloTrain info.
I'm making a list and trying to put something together for a 5 euro video. the problem I'm running into is I'm realizing how much further 5 euros can go in other parts of the country hahaha
I hope you can return to Bologne someday so your viewers may see more of it!
It's deffinately on my list for sure!
Who knows, maybe later this summer ;)
I've been to Italy several times and always used public transportation. And to be honest: Trenintalia is a nightmare. I've never experienced a more unreliable service. 9 out of 10 times the train was delayed or did not arrive at all.
for people living at places where travelling by train is prevalent, I guess it will be easier.
and are you allowed to bring food and drinks on the train
Not sure if you're allowed but everybody does haha 😆
Great video! Hello again ... We will back in Italy soon again. We have taken trains a lot in Italy and it has mostly been great. Bologna takes time to appreciate for sure. Check us out in Eastern Europe when you get a chance ....
If you ever make it up my way be sure to let me know!
Would you recommend getting a EuRail pass or just buying tickets for each trip?
It depends on where you'll be going and how much traveling youll be doing. It's good to calculate ahead of time. I know some people are under the impression that it's just a scam and it's just an upsell from travel agents that's not worth thinkng about ... however if you want to do a ton of traveling in a short period internationally, then it may be worth thinking about. It just depends. If you;ll only be in Italy, than I would say just book directly through Italo or TrenItalia as far in advance as possible, but there doesn't seem to be a need to book more than 30 days in advance, but when you get to be less than a month out, the prices start going up for the inter regional and high speed trains, but the regional train fares roughly stay at the same price
Nice video Rafael!
Trains in Italy are always full of surprises. You did not get too angry because of the delay, but you embraced the situation and got the most of out it.
It can be worse though. My mom one day took a Frecciarossa from Milan to Florence, but the previous train broke down, and the train my mom was on had to return all the way to Milan to switch to the other platform
It was interesting the difference of prices between Bologna and Alto Adige! Looking forward to the next video :)
evviva il commento pessimista italiota!
@@attenzioneallontanarsidall7940 io ho semplicemente riportato i fatti, "pessimista italiota" è la tua interpretazione.
oh my goodness that must have been so annoying and such a headache! on the way back my train had a mechanical issue but thankfully instead of having to return to bologna, we only had to change trains in Verona to continue onward.
Thanks for coming to check out the video and I hope you enjoy future videos!
I am traveling to Italy next year! This year was canceled due to COVID. Where is your luggage?
I had a small backpack an small laptop sized rolling suitcase. Because of how small they were I didn’t have to store them by the door and could just keep them with me the whole time
Obb is train German (Monaco from Bologna), not train Italy
Yes you are correct that it's not TrenItalia (which is why I wasn't able to use the electronic ticket i had. But Obb is actually Austrian. Obb is short for Österreichische Bundesbahnen. But this is why I put on the screen a little note that It was austrian when I said it was german. But hey they all speak dialects of the same language haha ;)
How is the heck can you ride backwards like that? It always leaves me with an upset stomach.
My train to Rome was 80 minutes late the other day! I didn’t pay attention and found out too late it was a sleeper.
I had no idea prices are that much higher up north!
I wouldn't say all of the north has prices like these, but some places here in Alto Adige can be reallly overpriced.
Haha normally I can't ride backwards either, but I think I was so sleep deprived that something must have been off haha, but in the second train I didn't have another option to sit forwards as the whole train was completely packed! I sat down thinking I was going in thr right direction.. then as soon as the train started I looked for another seat, everything was full and I almost lost my place so I thought i'd just stay there because it wasn't too long.
Just did that in Siena the other day! Feel for you brother. Ugh!!
Love your videos Sir
Do you have any knowledge of the far south of Italy as that is my destination soon ,
“Going to see about a girl...”lol
Also still busy trying to get EU passport as I am South African with Dutch decent
Hey Rafael Gracie per il video sto pensando di fare un business in Italia e speravo Che potessi fare un video dove it posto migliore per avviare un impresa e' un business martiql per bambini Che si chiede
Hi ben, I'm not sure if it's my Italian or if it's the way you phrased the question. But I'm not sure I understand 100%.
You're wanting to start a business in Italy and something to do with children?
I actually did briefly speak about starting a business in my videos from last week, here's the link :)

That train is obb (train from German nach Bologna). Not train Italy
Very cool, I'm usually in Bolzano once a week, if you ever see me around be sure to say hi ^_^
