  • If you think you've seen it all, hang on. Clayton Camp, who's the VP at Kern Machinery in Bakersfield had his Service supervisor install one of the John Deere crate motors into his 1969 2500 GMC truck. This thing looks better than factory, with some serious upgrades to the drive train. It's part of our Back to Life series. If you like car/truck builds, make sure to follow and sub our page. We have a H&S Body Works Back to Life playlist just for builds. H&S does some of the best builds in the Western United States. We've got some really cool stuff coming for gear heads.

    Great build!
My uncle owned a Kubota dealership back in the late 70s. He and my dad decided they needed a small service truck for the tractors. The winter on 78 my dad laid out the plans for that truck. He found a 74 model Toyota pickup and added a 30hp 3 cylinder Kubota diesel to the truck, then made the adapter plate for the Toyota 5speed manual. Ordered a reading service bed for the truck and painted the entire truck Kubota orange. It was completed in time for me to ride in it on my first day of kindergarten in the fall of 79. My uncle retired and closed the dealership in the mid 80s and my dad kept the truck. The drivetrain is now in its second Toyota body but still going. Top speed 71mph @52mpg.

Seems like a segway to re-enslave and lose personal rights to own property. In general the electronics industry seems to be more USSR secret where the olden days of purchasing a device with the schematics stapled to the interior case are gone in regards to being a general expectation. Now, there's proprietary firmware, hidden chip processes, software that is licensed and not owned, and some other concepts conning.

My build started in the early '80s with a '70 3500 one ton GM with 9' stepside bed . Ist engine was a takeout from a C-65HD Chevy = GM 4-53N, along with a Spicer 3152 five speed transmission , backed up with a Spicer 5831 three spiied auxilliary with .74 overdrive. I put it on the road in September '84, and in '96 I installed a DD 4-53T. Originally I stayed with original 4.10 ratio rear, but several years ago, I switched to a 3.58 Dana '70, as now it'll cruise the interstate with traffic, and not have engine singing . 38 years plus about 300,000 miles verifies it's been a practical-successful conversion .

Now were any ever produced that is certainly up for debate. Like I said it doubled the price and the only benefits were the dealership could work on the engine and that it had a longer life. In the 1990's, after achieving 2 college degrees, in Ag Business and Equipment Engineering, John Deere pushed me away with their pathetic compensation. 2 years into working for them, it was obvious they just weren't willing to pay a fair wage, so I left.
When I later worked for a CIH dealer, pay rates were a bit better, but still not good enough either, and I eventually left there as well.
The agricultural industry as a whole suffers from consistently losing good, intelligent people because they all pay substandard wages.
It's an unfortunate situation for everyone who loves Ag, but needs to make a reasonable living and refuse to be dirt poor while the corporations continue to line their wallets.

With shop rates now not many of us can afford technicians unless it is something specialized that needs repair.
