You only have to hear Steve Marriot sing one chorus to know that you have just listened to the greatest voice in the history of 'Rock Music. No one comes even close or ever will.
The recording “Black Coffee” really showcased his vocal skills and range. The tune had a fantastic R&B backup trio with a bluesy appeal. So very sad Steve is gone
How ironic but my friend and I went to a Foghat concert in 1973? 74? with Brownsville Station opening (you know smokin in the Boy's room) and Brownsville blew Foghat totally out of the water. This is Chicago and we wanted the blues, not some version of Humble Pie, although, when I hear Frampton play, at this point, I just think he is one of the best rock guitarists ever, more jazz than rock actually.
My two college roommates and I combined the best stereo components we each had to set up a super stereo system in our rent house. One roommate would play 30 Days in the Hole at full blast. Actually he would play the entire album Smokin' but that song in particular blew the place up and is still indelibly marked in my music memory, haha. That will be 50 years ago this autumn and that particular roommate, my friend and a Vietnam combat vet, is long dead from a strange cancer probably caused by Agent Orange. RIP Gerald ❤
Humble Pie had a HUGE leap in musical quality after signing with A&M and recording their next four big classics, including the live double LP Performance at Fillmore
I know what you mean. There's a British blues band called Dr Feelgood that was hugely influential. There were line-up changes but two of the original members are now dead and none of the current line-up are original members. Play Feelgood or Humble Pie songs, but don't take the band name.
I always thought it odd that the Small Faces aggressively resisted Frampton joining but, once Marriott left, they hired two to replace him (Rod Stewart and Ron Wood) thus expanding the lineup as Marriott wanted.
Another fantastic talent taken too soon. RIP Steve (& Greg). One of the best live bands ever! I saw them in the early 70s supported by Peter Frampton's Camel. My ears were ringing for days 😆
Thanks for your documentary. Very interesting though you didn’t cover Steve’s death. Had no idea the name was still being used. I remember at the end of the 90s when they reformed for the tribute gig with the Ridley/Shirley/Frampton/Clempson lineup and played the Astoria gig but also the Walthamstow Royal Standard which I was very surprised about because that venue was not only tribute band central but also by that point the graveyard for some of the less-successful early 80s NWOBHM bands and the Pie were way better than that. Didn’t go to either gig. Always thought they were best with Clempson rather than Frampton on lead. I also remember a CD with a blue cover credited to Humble Pie from about that time which had Jerry Shirley and Tim Hinckley (who played piano on 3 or 4 tracks on their cardboard gravestone “Street Rats” LP) on it along with two or three names I didn’t recognise and thought that was already taking the piss. Never bought it but I know it exists. I’m appalled that the name is still in use with no original members but unfortunately this kind of situation isn’t unique to Humble Pie. No Marriott no Pie as far as I’m concerned. RIP Steve & Greg.
Marriott always struggled with mental, drug and alcohol problems which steadily destroyed him; according to Ian MacLagen he was never the same after he had a bad acid trip in 1968, and Jerry Shirley said: "Drugs did for Steve." He was unlucky because after Mick Taylor left the Rolling Stones, his good friend Keith Richards wanted Steve to replace him, but Jagger refused to allow Marriott in the Stones. It is interesting to speculate what would have happened to Marriott if he had been taken under the wing of the Stones.
I heard them in two concerts at the Marquee Club in Soho in July / August 1970. There were some very important bands around at that time, but the Pie delivered two concerts on the highest standard. I heard their albums before, but the real thing left me almost breathless. There's also a logical reason to this: Does anybody remember how hot it was in the Marquee back then? No air conditioning, of course ...
I saw a band calling themselves “Humble Pie” in 1982 or 3, summer of in Racine Wi. No original members. No Steve Marriott =no Humble Pie. They played in fro t of maybe 50 people. Haning said THAT i have just lately been discovering some GREAT Humble Pie live tunes from 70’ 71’ thanks to you tube. “I walk on Guilded Splinters” oh my GOD what a performance! I transferred that over to my UFO PHENOMENON tunes, fits perfect after ROCK BOTTOM. Juuust perfect.
I saw them in Montreal in the early 70's. I can't remember if it was with Frampton or Clemson, all I remember was Steve Marriott. A force of nature, he was. Funny you should mention Cactus... what happened to them?
Nice of you to give the founder's DEATH some slight notice. I get there was a lot to do cataloging the unpleasant misadventures of all those so-called "Humble Pie" lineups to follow. Wasn't Barney the Dinosaur in one of those?
......on top of being fleeced by management....they...like a million other groups....would have sunk due to the record industry investing in 'turd only' commercial crap bands that all fell in line after 1980....when music became 'product'......and the product became crap.....couldn't sell what the public couldn't buy......
I'm from Detroit (blow the reveille)! _"What Happened To Humble Pie !?!"_ *Da Mob!* Most fans have no idea that organized crime has had an influence on what songs we hear. Ironically, (if the stories are to be believed) they used to push toward _'bumblegum'/'PG'/'innocent-love'_ type songs. They didn't like the 'rough-stuff'. When it came to *Hard Cash Promotion;* Steve Marriott got relegated to the 'B' list! It all went to _'The Face'._ (& his solo career) Same thing happened: NY Dolls vs. Aerosmith. (with less _'Mafioso'_ ) Same thing happened to *a lot* of really GREAT Hard R&R bands w/rough edges. If the HP/PF 'minders' cared about ROCK 'N ROLL; They would've strong-armed Frampton into staying in The Pie! (instead of strong-arming Marriott into shutting up & walking away) *ROX ON!* - Dave B.
Steve Marriott's last name is pronounced "MARRY-ett" (emphasis on the beginning part), -not- "Merry-OTT" like the USA hotel chain. Also should have edited the video to discuss his death, at least something more than a text blurp like you forgot to include it.
Unfortunately Steve Marriot who was Humble Pie struggled with addiction and alcoholism. Also his career was stunted by the fact Jon Gotti held his Contract and his career in his hands.
Pretty great. I'm a fan since '72 with Smokin' but bought Performance there after. Great 2 record set. couple of 'niggles' fans here already know, but... The PF Phenix LP C was not bought. It was a gift from SF fan Mark Mariana. Peter offered to buy and the guy gave it to him !! Peter still speaks highly of their friendship. No, Peter's not well. When he gigs, he plays sitting down. Been battling a degenerative disease for a couple of years now. I believe he's calling it quits after this year. What can i say? I'm a fan, seeing him as a middle act once at Winterland then Headliner twice, yes FCA for DYFLWD. I was there.. Skymyrd Day On The Green, in '77. yep, i was there. More HP releases here but never got to see them. Should have mentioned the passing of Steve. Poor guy lost in his own home during a house fire. It killed him. To me, one of the greatest Rock singers ever. The fact he wrote and played guitar was icing on the 'pie :) Rest In Peace, Steve Marriott. Nice trip back. Rock On.
Marriott was a serious alcoholic. Which is typical of the English. It did not help make the band successful or the heroin use in their band or others. Stick with weed and a little alcohol. Always a wise decision.
In terms of alcohol, do what Marty Robbins did. Have a drinking problem early in your career, and completely quit before you reach your mid to later 20's.
Frampton admitted that quitting Pie in 72 was nearly his Rock-Career suicide.. although he recover and found his niche in 75-76 with the smashing “comes alive” record..
No such thing as Humble Pie without Marriott! RIP
it was a watered down band after Marriots exit,
I was hoping for a reunion with Marriott and Frampton shortly before Steve passed away.. I’ve believe some new songs were recorded ..
In my opinion, Humble Pie ended in 1975. None of the later bands ever came close to the
greatness of 1969-75. RIP Steve Marriott and Greg Ridley.
You are 100% correct young lady.
To this day only the Original Humble Pie and Deep Purple are the bands I still rock out to ,to this day at 68 .
That's when I saw them
Good Bye To The Pie Tour
I saw Humble Pie twice once in 1975 and once in 1984ish it was a three piece with a black guy on bass it was in a small club...
.....well said......
One of the greatest talents RIP Steve Marriott
Humble Pie without Steve Marriot is like Grand Funk Railroad without Mark Farner.
You only have to hear Steve Marriot sing one chorus to know that you have just listened to the greatest voice in the history of 'Rock Music. No one comes even close or ever will.
I AGREE ❤😢
The recording “Black Coffee” really showcased his vocal skills and range. The tune had a fantastic R&B backup trio with a bluesy appeal. So very sad Steve is gone
I Dont Need No Doctor Live Version..one of thee Greatest Hard Rock Song EVER !!!
All these years later I agree.
Thirty days in the hole is another.
A kindred spirit
Went to a Humble Pie concert in the early 70s. Foghat opened for them. Wildest concert I ever went to, lol.
How ironic but my friend and I went to a Foghat concert in 1973? 74? with Brownsville Station opening (you know smokin in the Boy's room) and Brownsville blew Foghat totally out of the water. @@haihechina I believe it was later in 1973, in Tulsa, the concert I went to. Those were the days 😂
Saw Humble Pie 1975 at the Academy of Music. Excellent concert
The Frampton days Dee Anthony was the beginning of the end
Cool 😎
My two college roommates and I combined the best stereo components we each had to set up a super stereo system in our rent house. One roommate would play 30 Days in the Hole at full blast. Bittersweet Memories. Thank you for your service Gerald.
No Marriott….NO Humble Pie
Humble Pie had a HUGE leap in musical quality after signing with A&M and recording their next four big classics, including the live double LP Performance at Fillmore
Love them Steve is and was the Best singer EVER.❤ RIP 😢
I think it sucks, all these musicians riding on the name "Humble Pie" long after the original line-up folded. name- cash in- distasteful.
I know what you mean. There's a British blues band called Dr Feelgood that was hugely influential. There were line-up changes but two of the original members are now dead and none of the current line-up are original members. Play Feelgood or Humble Pie songs, but don't take the band name.
same thing with Lynyrd Skynyrd in truth that band ended in October '77
I always thought it odd that the Small Faces aggressively resisted Frampton joining but, once Marriott left, they hired two to replace him (Rod Stewart and Ron Wood) thus expanding the lineup as Marriott wanted.
Good point.
Live at the Fillmore - sheer brilliance.
I Dont Need No Doctor
“Red Lebanese makes me weak in the knees”
Alright alright alright
Could of talked a little more on how Frampton got that guitar back, pretty amazing story to be told there. Great video tho as always :-)
Cool, thanks!
If any bands want to be forgotten have this narrator drone on about your history.
Another fantastic talent taken too soon. RIP Steve (& Greg). One of the best live bands ever! I saw them in the early 70s supported by Peter Frampton's Camel. My ears were ringing for days 😆
Couldn't agree more!

Remember PP Arnold on Tin Soldier - her ‘backup’ voice helped make that song.
Hydra, T Rex, Humble Pie!!1973!! Excellent work
Yes! Thank you!

Jagger probably didn't want to be upstaged.
Should have covered a bit more about Marriott’s death. He formed that band!
I saw HP with GFR in Hyde park London My god it was loud. but Great.....
The modified '54 was actually given to Frampton by a fan.
I heard them in two concerts at the Marquee Club in Soho in July / August 1970.
There were some very important bands around at that time, but the Pie delivered two concerts on the highest standard. I heard their albums before, but the real thing left me almost breathless.

My favorite was "Thunderbox"

That was a great film. Cheers.
I Wonder and Live with me 2 great rock and blues tune
How about one on "The Band"?
WoW. Excellent doc on the band. Thanks. "Hot and Nasty" "30 Days In The Hole"?
Thanks for listening
I saw them in Montreal in the early 70's. I can't remember if it was with Frampton or Clemson, all I remember was Steve Marriott. A force of nature, he was. Funny you should mention Cactus... what happened to them?
😮I saw them in 1975
Goodbye To The Pie Tour.
Peter Frampton
John Entwistle
Humble Pie
Philadelphia Spectrum
Winter 1975
Why ain't they in the hall of fame.
Have all of these albums. Well, I had them all
Peter Frampton’s stepping stone.
Nice of you to give the founder's DEATH some slight notice. I get there was a lot to do cataloging the unpleasant misadventures of all those so-called "Humble Pie" lineups to follow. Wasn't Barney the Dinosaur in one of those?
I've heard that Keith Richards wanted Steve to join the Stones but Mick wanted no part of it ...
I saw them at Tampa Stadium around 1971-72.
Pointless with out Marriott
A few suggestions- Nitzinger or Bang or Sir Lord Baltimore. Cheers. Keep on keeping on!
Imagine trading under the name humble pie without Marriott
Or using the name with no original members ! ( shame on you Jerry Shirley !!😡)
Gotta do a vid on "Spooky Tooth" a lot of future stars began with them....not to mention Greg Ridley 😏
What brand of cymbals did Jerry Shirley play been searching for since 1972.
What Happened to Johnny Rivers?
next please
ROCK ON PIE!!👍
Do one on the Groundhogs
Nazareth the most underrated band of all time!
please do The Sons Of Champlin next
I don't need no doctor - live, you can clearly hear Peter Frampton.
Frampton didnt purchase guitar it was given to him because it had three pickups
Quicksilver Messenger Service and Primus
......on top of being fleeced by management....they...like a million other groups....would have sunk due to the record industry investing in 'turd only' commercial crap bands that all fell in line after 1980....when music became 'product'......and the product became crap.....couldn't sell what the public couldn't buy......
Nothing happen to Humble Pie , they did there time ,and there music well last forever .
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Humble Pie... Should have been re-named 'Trigger's broom'.
Did they have anything to do with faces with Rod Stewart's faces at all 🤔
I'm from Detroit (blow the reveille)!

After Frampton and Clemson left, they went downhill fast.
Must have the signature voice, or no more band!
Journey, Kansas, Foriener, ect. Just tribute bands.
What happened to Humble Pie? Why Hell, it was eaten.
Someone ate it, HAHAhaha...ok, i will leave.
Barely said anything about Marriotts death and what happened??
could you research Bloodrock?
Doa
Unfortunately Steve Marriot who was Humble Pie struggled with addiction and alcoholism. Also his career was stunted by the fact Jon Gotti held his Contract and his career in his hands.
They were. Robbed !!
All talented people but they didn't have the songs .

Do you think the English drink a lot because the country is so cramped? The royals and their cronies take up all of the land.
