The non-canon novels may have made him seem tragic, but even before the implication that he's _two_ of the original 13 Darknesses that possessed Ventus during the Union X era, he had no qualms beating down Ventus and Aqua and downright laughed like a psychopath after Aqua beat him the first time. He broke Ventus's woodblade in half, constantly talked down to Ventus, told him to his face that he would watch h his loved ones die, helped Xehanort keep Terra away from his friends, cut down Aqua and was about to kill her before Ventus intervened, mocked him for thinking he stood a chance after revealing he was the source of all Unversed, tried to force him into fusing fully to create a rushed version of the χ-blade, laughed while telling Ventus that destroying said blade would destroy his heart, and his past self in 3 is just obsessed with getting Ventus just to have "the rest of him" and has no qualms about helping as a True Organzation XIII member. They try to make his death sad in 3, but much like Xemnas and Xehanort's, it falls flat because nothing he's done has given him any sympathetic leg to stand on. There were no signs of abuse from Xehanort anywhere, so he actively chose to raise hell. The fact they have Ventus and Sora try to go "You could've chosen" is flat too considering that it's his past self who will go back to the past and not remember any of this. I honestly doubt present Vanitas would change either. Screw both of em.
I don’t think anyone saw the last part other than his team since everyone was still in the tree so everyone there just saw him fighting alongside them then woke up and sees Naruto and Sasuke with one arm so they probably think they just beat Madara in a struggle
I would like to say that everything sasuke did had good reasoning behind it. When sasuke left the village he didn’t leave the village with the intentions to come back and destroy konoha he left in order to achieve power that could help him achieve his goal, “kill itachi.” Realistically kakashi couldn’t get him where he needed to go to beat itachi so that decision made sense and had no ill intentions on the leaf. Only after finding out how the leaf essentially forced itachi to kill off the uchiha clan and danzo killing off shisui did sasuke plan to take over konoha, which is a fair reaction and him joining the akatsuki was because tobi was the one who told him the truth which created trust towards tobi. Tbf sasuke personally went to the summit to kill danzo which he did hurting everyone else was most of tobi’s idea. After sasuke talked to the previous hokages sasuke changed his goal from destroying konoha to wanting to be hokage. Then he helped save the world from madara and kaguya which I feel somewhat cancels out the fact that he helped start the war. The fight he had with Naruto after the war was more of a personal matter between the two. They had the same goals just different ways to go about it Naruto wanted to end the cycle of hatred by stoping violence and sasuke wanted to stop the cycle by creating a single entity for everyone to hate(himself) which would make everyone come together. After all that you’d also have to consider the fact that the only person strong enough to actually stop sasuke was Naruto, idk what you really want the people of Konoha to do for “punishment” sasuke turning himself in also helped show that he was remorseful for his wrong doing and when you remember he saved konoha from the other half of the meteor, helped save the world from momoshiki, isshiki/jigen I’d say he more than redeemed himself.
Sasuke definitely got off too easy, but let's keep it real on one thing. Danzo had it coming to him and it the main reason why Sasuke attacked the Summit in the first place. If he was still alive, things would've been more bad than good.

The non-canon novels may have made him seem tragic, but even before the implication that he's _two_ of the original 13 Darknesses that possessed Ventus during the Union X era, he had no qualms beating down Ventus and Aqua and downright laughed like a psychopath after Aqua beat him the first time. He broke Ventus's woodblade in half, constantly talked down to Ventus, told him to his face that he would watch h his loved ones die, helped Xehanort keep Terra away from his friends, cut down Aqua and was about to kill her before Ventus intervened, mocked him for thinking he stood a chance after revealing he was the source of all Unversed, tried to force him into fusing fully to create a rushed version of the χ-blade, laughed while telling Ventus that destroying said blade would destroy his heart, and his past self in 3 is just obsessed with getting Ventus just to have "the rest of him" and has no qualms about helping as a True Organzation XIII member. They try to make his death sad in 3, but much like Xemnas and Xehanort's, it falls flat because nothing he's done has given him any sympathetic leg to stand on. There were no signs of abuse from Xehanort anywhere, so he actively chose to raise hell. The fact they have Ventus and Sora try to go "You could've chosen" is flat too considering that it's his past self who will go back to the past and not remember any of this. I honestly doubt present Vanitas would change either. Screw both of em.

I don’t think anyone saw the last part other than his team since everyone was still in the tree so everyone there just saw him fighting alongside them then woke up and sees Naruto and Sasuke with one arm so they probably think they just beat Madara in a struggle
I would like to say that everything sasuke did had good reasoning behind it. When sasuke left the village he didn’t leave the village with the intentions to come back and destroy konoha he left in order to achieve power that could help him achieve his goal, “kill itachi.” Realistically kakashi couldn’t get him where he needed to go to beat itachi so that decision made sense and had no ill intentions on the leaf. Only after finding out how the leaf essentially forced itachi to kill off the uchiha clan and danzo killing off shisui did sasuke plan to take over konoha, which is a fair reaction and him joining the akatsuki was because tobi was the one who told him the truth which created trust towards tobi. Tbf sasuke personally went to the summit to kill danzo which he did hurting everyone else was most of tobi’s idea. After sasuke talked to the previous hokages sasuke changed his goal from destroying konoha to wanting to be hokage. Then he helped save the world from madara and kaguya which I feel somewhat cancels out the fact that he helped start the war. The fight he had with Naruto after the war was more of a personal matter between the two. They had the same goals just different ways to go about it Naruto wanted to end the cycle of hatred by stoping violence and sasuke wanted to stop the cycle by creating a single entity for everyone to hate(himself) which would make everyone come together. After all that you’d also have to consider the fact that the only person strong enough to actually stop sasuke was Naruto, idk what you really want the people of Konoha to do for “punishment” sasuke turning himself in also helped show that he was remorseful for his wrong doing and when you remember he saved konoha from the other half of the meteor, helped save the world from momoshiki, isshiki/jigen I’d say he more than redeemed himself.

He was unhinged, but he eventually came to his own path, which to me is a good enough reason to let him walk considering that he's not only as strong as Naruto, but dedicating his EVERY waking moment atoning for his past sins.
