Just Me look up Shore’s resume and compare it to Williams’. I love lotr score but one awesome score does not trump a lifetime of awesome scores. Name me three great Shore scores besides the trilogy and for every one you do, Williams has a dozen more.
Williams is the greatest movie score writer of all time. Yes, Richard Rodgers (Sound of Music) is a legendary composer, but at the end of the day, Williams wrote the music that has become part of everyday life. And Jaws theme. That's THE most recognised and iconic piece of music ever written in the history of mankind.
I never watched Saving Private Ryan, I'm not even an American, but I admit that this is the only fully instrumental orchestration, without any lyric, that can make me burst into tears. One of the best masterpiece from John Williams. Magnificent.
The opening scene of Saving Private Ryan - will - and should - send shivers down anyone's spine. In horror. To honour the men landing on that day. Where so many ended in the fallen.
I hope you’ve watched the film, the whole film is brilliant and this piece of music after one of the characters being an elderly man now asks if he’s lived a good life as the screen fades to black is spine tingling and so moving
This piece of music brings tears to my eyes, not just for what it represents in terms of the sacrifice made by people of all nations in war, but also for the beauty of what people can create with musical and vocal harmony - if only we as a human race could harness our collective energies towards creative rather than destructive effort!
Sorry. The music is beautiful, but it needs to be remembered that it was written to honor those Americans who died to end the tyranny and barbarity of both nazi Germany and imperialist Japan, both of which were evil and worthy of neither my respect nor my sympathy. "Honoring all" honors none.
Dear Madam, I have been shown in the files of the War Department, a statement by the adjutant General of Massachusetts, that you are the mother of 5 sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle. I feel how weak and fruitless must be any words of mine that would attempt to beguile you of the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from rendering to you the consolation that made be found, in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have ever laid so costly a sacrifice upon the alter of freedom. Yours very sincerely and respectfully, Abraham Lincoln.
To read this, whilst listening to the overwhelmingly evocative, emotional piece that is John Williams' "Hymn To The Fallen", lays bare the raw sense of loss that must have been - and still is - the burden of so many mothers down the generations. Words can never be enough.
@@robertlestylo6085 It's the mother's that are the heroes, I was in Nam 67 & 68 Army. When in base camp for resupply & rest, I would play reel to reel tapes from home. While my dad (a fighter pilot in the USAF) brought me up to date about family, I could hear my mom crying in the back ground. It tore me apart. I was lucky to return home & many of my brothers gave the ultimate sacrifice , 67, 68 & 69 were very costly. On the way home after my parents met me at the airport I remember my dad saying " well mommy you can sleep tonight, your son is home safe". Since the beginning of time, fallen soldiers have been the greatest victims. Young men who wanted life and liberty... only for it to be robbed of them by greedy old men who cared nothing for them. God bless them all.
Pretty sure civilian casualties usually outnumber military casualties in most wars, including the one this song is about. Civilians suffer the same horrific sights and experiences without even training nor weapons. A lot of times after a sacking of a city, you could argue their fate is even worse than that of a common soldier. I think the innocent young boys vs greedy old man trope only extends to the most recent wars. Looting, sacking and rape were kind of big motivators for most soldiers since the beginning of time. Not to mention the ability to capture slaves. pretty much the opposite of yearning for life and liberty.
I've seen countless documentaries about WWII and every soldier interviewed, without missing a beat, declared that the real heroes are those buried under the crosses and stars of David. Everyone else is simply a survivor. We should honor those that gave all for our safety and peace.
Hearing this floods my memory of my recent visit to Utah, Omaha, Gold, Sword and Juno beaches. Our final stop at the American cemetery was something I will never forget. It is hard to fathom what our Fathers/Grandfathers did for us, we can never forget.
There is a reason probably tens of millions of people across the globe consider John Williams to be the best in what he does, myself included. The best in the field of soundtracks or classical music in general? In the field of soundtracks, I'd say that Alan Menken has destroyed everyone in the nineties. This piece is so well done by John Williams, because it's not that easy and cheesy "we are heroes" theme. There are so many emotions going on simultaneously, can't describe it in words, just music can do that. Really good performance of orchestra, choir and conductor.
This song honors all those who fought in WW2 regardless of whether they fought with the Soviets, allied powers, or axis powers. People can't control where theyre born or where they're from. ❤
Seeing the emotion in the faces of the choir and orchestra says a lot about how emotional this music is.. Truly a masterpiece and one of the most underrated film soundtracks of all time IMO. The part from 4:18 onward, where the music climaxes, is really touching..
Magnificent. Splendid. Moving. Beautiful. This orchestra, choir and its conductor did a flawless, virtuoso performance of this beloved composition. John Williams is a national treasure. Steven Spielberg's adaptation of this story with its unforgettable cast honors the memories of all those who "gave the last full measure of devotion." A salute to everyone involved.
What I love is that no matter how anxious or stressed or whatever I get in my daily life, sitting down and just listening to music, whatever type it is as long as it touches me, lets me focus on that and only that, and in those moments the outside world doesn't exist...and it's an awesome feeling.
When I listen this or the Omaha Beach soundtrack it just moves me to a whole other world. I always break down in tears, I feel what they felt and I want to thank them for liberating us all from Evil. May you all rest in peace! You are all hero's. Thank you Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and John Williams for the best movie ever made in history.

This plaintive and emotional piece by Williams pulls at the heartstrings of anyone effected by war directly or indirectly. There are truly no winners in a war when you consider all the families who may have lost a loved one as well as the countless soldiers with physical and psychological scars who return home. This beautiful orchestration is one of the best renditions I have heard under the superb baton of Ulf Schirmer conducting the Munich Radio Orchestra and choir as part of the Cinema in Concert series which in this case has segments of Saving Private Ryan projected behind the orchestra. Special credit should be given to the technical crews who have placed microphones expertly in the auditorium and mixed the sound for clarity of instruments as well as the superb camera operators/switchers. Through their efforts, it’s difficult not to become emotionally vested in this production. Bravissimo! 👏👏

GREAT job by the orchestra brass in the chorale section at 2min in! the irony of this video, is the passion conveyed by this great german orchestra despite the extremely sad history of it's nation in the narrative of this movie.
Why should this song only be for the victorious countries?Germany along with its allies had a generation who died for a cause in which many did not believe in, but simply were born at the wrong place in a wrong time. Many of them had their own stories, lived their war, had their loved ones. There is no irony in playing it for all the fallen. I'm sure you get what I'm saying.

I agree, from America. I wish men didn't have to die in order to stop evil.
THIS is such a powerful theme...leaves me crying on the floor!
Sublime. Your performance honors my country. Many thanks.
Thanks for sharing. Moving, reflective tribute honoring all those brave Men and Women around the world who have and continue to pay the ultimate price for our freedom - I thank them. May they Rest In Peace.
Nossa... sem palavras... me emociono quando ouço este concerto, dando ainda mas ênfase ao lembrar do final do melhor filme de guerra já produzido.
I'm not gonna lie. I kinda choked up a bit...
sublime
James Navarrete Sir.
I am an amateur musician playing tuba in a British brass band. Whenever we rehearse or perform this music I shed tears.
I'm so very grateful for John Williams Tom hanks Steven Spielberg
An absolutely astounding rendition by this orchestra and their conductor.
@Hello Rob how are you doing
It is better than the original. The horns are better.
OMG!!! This is how this song has to be played! amazing job! clapping hardly!
NO CLAPPING ! NONE !!
This always brings me to tears when I hear this because I always think of the men who gave everything so I could have my freedom. I'm so thankful for them.
Just tears of gratitude to the fallen & to composers for capturing the emotions in music😢
What a masterpiece always bring tears to my eyes
Glorious masterpiece.
listening to this on memorial day 2020 🇺🇸
I played a wind band arrangement of this piece, and even that version brought tears to my eyes. Since then, I’ve listened to the original soundtrack recording probably thousands of times, and this version moves me just as much as that. Thank you for posting a live performance of this beautiful music.

It's just the perfect song ! Thank you Sir Williams !
Simply beautiful, it sends shivers down my spine every time I listen to this stunning piece of music, God bless that generation of Americans.
That imagery of paratroopers slowly falling from the sky as flak and spotlight light up the night sky.

John Williams at his magnificent best
My piano teacher said, Williams is a brilliant craftman of music, but he never really invented anything new. Nevertheless he can always touch me with his music.
Let us pause to remember the invasion of Normandy and the lives lost on both sides.
