Ubuntu 8.04 LTS - The LEGENDARY Hardy Heron

  • In this video we take a look back in time. We will be checking out the very first Linux distribution I've ever used. This is Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron. When I was just a young lad in the 8th grade I was looking for a free operating system that would run better than Windows XP. I had 512MB of RAM to work with and Ubuntu did the trick.

You can use repository to get the latest versions of apps for 8.04 or other non supported versions. You just need to change source list from archive.ubuntu.com to old-releases.ubuntu.com

Slackware 2.0. Floppies in a shoe box, wrapped as a Christmas gift. A big red bow and everything. Who knew Santa was so cool? I installed it over Christmas break 1994. By the New Year I had a working system-although I had no clue what I was doing. Middle school was great having hacker friends around. We debated BSD vs Linux even back then. I’m still on Slackware today. And still learning new Linux things all these years later.

The first distro I actually had installed and used was Mint 16 I'm pretty sure, on my mom's old laptop that I inherited. I was messing around with Ubuntu way back when 14 was brand new, but sadly my desktop didn't have proper support for Linux, so I couldn't use it outside of live session. I've been planning on doing a full switch ever since Windows 10 came out. 5 years later, my wish came true. 😅

I wish I knew what my first Linux distro was, so I could tell my kids. I am fairly sure that Ubuntu 8.04 was my first Ubuntu version. It's the oldest one that I remember using, and I still have a CD with that on it. It's a CD I burned and not a pressed disc from Canonical, which would have been so much cooler to have now. I still use Ubuntu as my main Linux distro. But I think my first Linux distro must have been either Mandrake, or the later Mandriva, or Red Hat. The former two were based on Red Hat, or at least Mandrake was. I clearly remember using some early version of Red Hat, long before Red Hat became "RHEL" and Fedora. I have used many different distros over the years, but if I had to guess, I would say Red Hat 7 was my first Linux distro.

12.04 was my first experience with Ubuntu, but my first GNU/Linus experience was with Red Hat back in 1999, and even before 12.04, I carried around a Knoppix live thumb drive in my backpack when I was in highschool actually used it to gain access to admin privileges on my school's computers. Unfortunately, I didn't start daily driving Linux until like 2018-2019, mainly because I'm a gamer, and gaming didn't start its big exodus, of sorts, until then.

My first Linux OS I tried was Ubuntu 13.04 which I burned to a DVD (that's somewhere with my DVDs) back in 2013 and used for doing backups of files when Windows broke itself or got brolen by viruses. I liked the Unity Desktop at the time, but I haven't used it in years to have a more updated judgement. What I'm sure that I hated was the animation of the applications menu because it lagged hard on the netbook I used it which was powered by an Intel Atom N450.
Ubuntu 14.04LTS was the next one I used and is also pronably burned on a DVD and lived for months on a flash drive of mine along with a Windows install ISO in a multiboot config.
While 13.04 was my first, the oldest copy at home is Ubuntu 5.10 on 2 CDs. One live CD and one Install CD. It was one of the copies that came from the program where CDs could be requested and mailed to people and was probably requested by a relative of mine, but I never got to use it.

At that year until 14.04 version, Ubuntu provides free CD with Ubuntu Installation. And now that item become collector item 😁

I think my first Linux distro was Ubuntu 6.06 aka Dapper Drake. God, I loved gnome 2!

My first distribution was Arch Linux. Before that I ran Mac OS X. I think before making the switch to Linux I used El Capitán. Currently, I only run Debian or Debian-based distributions.
