  • I moved to Shenzhen six months ago and I am still finding myself adjusting to everyday life in every way. Whether it's communication, food, navigation, or the vast cultural differences, even the simplest of things are never a walk in the park. Here's a look into how I have adjusted to life in China thus far.

    Hi, I'm a Chinese from Taiwan. Mainland China is the place where my parents were from. I love Mainland no matter what. I also experienced culture shock when I visited Beijing in 2011. It’s so familiar yet it’s also different at the same time. Thanks for sharing your experience in China. It’ll be a lot easier when you learn the language. We humans’ differences are but skin-deep.

      liu0tube. Cultural shocks going from one region on mainland to another. A southerner will find many strange things in Beijing, let alone Taiwanese.

      大陆之大,人口之多,文化之多元,发展之迅速,社会转变之快,国情之复杂,在世界上是一个独特的存在。我作为一个北方人,念书在中西部,工作在南方,老婆是南方人,工作经常去不同城市出差,去过20个国家出差旅行,其中在印度,智利,墨西哥,土耳其还呆了很长时间。让我深深体会到中国文化的开放与包容,尽管很多人素养不高,不遵守交通规则,但这并不代表这些人就是不好的人,因为中国人多口,国情复杂,人口受教育水平,经济水平,文化习惯不同,素养参差不齐。但接近十四亿的人口依然和平相处,互相理解包容,社会之稳定。中国现在需要做的是重新恢复传统文化和价值观,而在方面,政府和普通老百姓都意识到了,而且都在付诸行动。我自己是一个自我要求很高的人,可以说我的言行举止,对待别人都很好,加上我在国外生活了蛮长时间。但很重要的一点是以前自己真的不够包容别人,讨厌很多公共行为差劲的人。但后来我有机会接触到了很多这样的人,其实他们都是很好的人,很多公共行为不能代表他们的任性,不能代表他们不善良。再想想我农村的父母,朴实,善良,包容,总是与人友善,但来到城市生活也不能适应。我严于律己,但我一度缺乏中国文化最好的东西包容,理解。 这也是我为什么认为日本人有很多优点需要我们学习,但是我并不喜欢他们的文化,因为他们不够包容,理解,过于严厉,不够开放。中国存在这样那样的问题,如果你是一个见证了中国进步的人,一个来到中国达到5年以上的老外,你会对中国更加包容,理解,也会对他更有信心,因为他的政府和百姓从不停止进步。 台湾人总体还是保留儒家文化很好的价值,和善,包容,友善。但目前社会氛围不好,去中国化明显,受西方民主自由和左派思想影响太大。而香港人不仅更加西化,而且对中国传统文化和历史更是理解甚少,现在年轻人都如果打了鸡血一样,这对一个社会是非常危险的。很多时候年轻人和知识分子推动了社会进步,但如果过于求成,会给一个地方带来灾难

    I enjoyed every episode of your video. You're a true China Lover, and Modern China is indeed the most livable and peaceful country in the world to be loved. I was originally from China 40 years ago, but I have lost all the ties there though I speak the language. Once you learn the language and get used to the people, you'll see that Chinese are actually not much different from the Americans. You'll comfortably mingle with the culture and enjoy the safety of that society in contrast to the constant anxiety of violence we've experienced back home, such as the latest massacre in Las Vegas. I am very glad to see all your positive experiences in China and sincerely with you the Good Luck there.

    • @WheresPoppy
      @WheresPoppy  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I'm hoping I can learn this language relatively quick just to feel more comfortable here. It's definitely the most difficult place I've lived mainly because of the language barrier, which is completely my fault. Also, yes it is very safe here. I might even make a video about it especially in comparison with the US which is really unsafe. I had some very close friends at the Las Vegas massacre and it just makes me so mad that things just keep getting worse and worse.

    • @theeagle4084
      @theeagle4084 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you for the reply and comment. I came to the States as a young student. When I landed in the Bay Area, I was amazed and also culture shocked by how beautiful and peaceful the country was. The air was literally shinning and the people around me were extremely nice even for the police officers in the neighborhood. They were very friendly and willing to help even without my request when they saw I was in trouble. Now a day, we get used to the news for innocent people being shot, not only by the maniacs but also by the police whose first and foremost responsibility are to protect the innocents, not to show off their license to kill abilities. Chinese policemen are certainly doing a better job in keeping the street safe as well as the harmony of society.
      I wish you luck in learning the language quickly. Once this is achieved, not only you'll feel the life much easier there but discover the true friendship with the people who are willing to help you wholeheartedly when you're in need. Chinese and Americans are very much alike In this regard.

    This is a very interesting video, because it describes the experience of many immigrants to a new land: shock, adaptation, frustration, but also triumph in small victories of everyday life. Your video indirectly teaches us to be kind to others, and how small gestures of patience and understanding can make a huge difference to those trying to make a new home in a strange place.

    HAHAHA! I love your comment about China being slow and fast at the same time. I feel the same way, except, you'll start seeing a much faster side of things, once the language is less of a barrier. I feel the US is super slow when I go back now, only because simple things are made very complicated by rigid protocols put into daily life. In China, I use apps to buy movie tickets (you pick the theatre closest to you, pick your seat, pay and out comes a QR code--you don't even need to interface with a human), I get my groceries delivered in less than an hour and I buy things on Taobao for cheap and they appear at my door sometimes in less than 24 hours. Once you figure it out, you can do practically ANYTHING in China and it's far more efficient that in Europe or the US. 加油!
    PS - Pleco is a really great dictionary. When I can't read something, I just "draw" it in. So helpful.

      mailepointfive I agree with you! China is far and away ahead of the game when it comes to apps or getting anything done quickly I'd say. In a way I feel like I'm in the future because some of the technology implemented is just genius and major time-savers. WeChat alone is just phenomenal. Although, not speaking the language inhibits from taking full advantage of everything so hopefully the longer I stay the more I can benefit!

    "SLOW" is because people work hard. You do not need to follow public transportation's schedule when you take a bus or metro like in North america. There are lots of buses waiting for you. Also you do not need follow 9am-5pm government schedule, because all goverment departments work overtime. In Beijing, at least until 8pm and plus weekend. So that all the chinese pleople work really hard make people feel everything goes " FAST". No secret hiding in chinese miracle, but only one word: working! Salute to all the people living in that land.

    Bugs in the pasta isn't about China, but all the wet tropics, including Miami. In her luxury apartment in Palm Beach, my mom kept opened packages of pasta, cookies, etc. in an unused microwave. In Costa Rica where I live, I keep open flour, cereal, etc., in the freezer. The locals mostly live in large families and cook everything that they open the same day, although in the supermarkets there are numerous brands of very tightly sealing containers. Enjoy! You are so much fun.

    the bugs are probably because the pasta was not properly sealed and stored after you first open. It happens if you live in a relatively more humid environement, like Shenzhen or southease asian cities. So I always use a zip lock bag to store pasta, rice etc. hope it helps.

    I know what you mean with the pace of development... When my girlfriend and I moved here, we arrived in Fuyong (Bao'an district)... it felt like the sticks of Shenzhen (still does sometimes), but since we've been here it's just exploded with developments... it started with the metro (thank you line 11), and now it has so many new places that popped up - a lot of Western stores, -restaurants, -fast food franchises... banks, schools and major cellphone dealers, a massive mall with a foreign supermarket, premium gym, cinemas, arcades, games, foreign restaurants, and chain stores... you see more and more taxis and buses in the area which is always a good sign (now if we can just get rid of the e-bikes) ... all of this within the last 6 months.

    Hey Poppy I accidentally saw your channel on recommendation so I clicked in and couldn't stop watching many of your videos! Your videos are awesome and very funny! I was born in China and moved to Canada in my adolescence so its really a some kind of mix of culture in my mind and habits. Watching you video is like over-viewing my native culture from my second culture perspective and this experience is just wonderful. Some time I find what you mentioned in your videos is familiar to my own memory, and some time I find its bizarre too because it has almost been ten years since I left China (even though I went back to China during vacations, but it is to my knowledge that China undergoes a lot of changes through years and it is great to see through your video!) Thank you!

    Love your positive attitude! Once you got even more comfortable in Shenzhen, I'd recommend trying out some other places in China, because you'd then start to see how varied different places are. Hangzhou (very close to Shanghai) is an easy city to travel and has a LOT to be seen, I'd recommend that first. The most famous cities in western China are Xi'An, Chongqing and Chengdu, each having thousands of years of standing history. Xi'An is the famed ancient capital, Chengdu is repeatedly called the most "leisurely" city of China, Chongqing has very interesting city landscape due to being in the mountains.

    That language barrier is really total. I had a helper to deal with the other issues you mentioned. After 6 weeks I think I need to take this barrier more seriously, despite the apps that can help. The Chinese love swopping app translations and you can joke with them but there is only one tough option for me: learn Chinese. Even then, not an easy challenge. I thought learning Danish was tough, and it helps, but Chinese is just mind blowing.

    It is beneficial to you for being adventurous and willing to experience the local culture, especially eating local food. I am a Chinese American, and it took me 40 years living in this country before I was willing to eat salad because I did NOT want to try veggies that were not cooked. I have had very difficult time adjusting to living in America because I was unwilling to eat “American food”, such as salad, hamburger, pizza…. Bottom line, I admire your adventurous spirit to experience life to the fullest! Good luck living in China.

    It always takes me a year to completely adjust to a new environment. Ugh I'm so not good at it. You are so much better than me already considering how different life is in China compared to the US. Take your time and keep up the good work!

      @WheresPoppy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris Chan I don't think you are giving yourself enough credit! I don't know you and you don't know me but I know that it's all about your attitude and how hard you try to be happy with the adjustment. Maybe from your perspective, it looks like it's been easy for me to adjust but I will disagree and tell you that it's been very hard! We all go through this and the ones that seem like it's less difficult are just trying that much harder to be positive about it. So just know you are not alone and it gets easier :)

    good luck on learning Chinese, it's actually not that hard, Chinese grammar is incredibly easy, just build enough vocabulary and you'll be fine with most daily tasks.

      The tones in Chinese are what makes things difficult. I try speaking Chinese sometimes to locals but they never seem to understand me ahha so I get discouraged! I will keep trying!

    • @lingquanzhou3338

      No we dont have any grammar for daily speaking english, go poppy, speak some Chinese !

    • @obsidianstatue
      @obsidianstatue 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Where's Poppy
      don't let the tones discourage you, most westerners who lived in China for years still can't master the tone, it is very difficult but if you're unsure about a tone just fall back to the first tone (the flat one) and majority of the time if you speak slow enough they'll understand you. even in Chinese songs, when the tone of the word don't match with the melody they'll just change the tone of the word, a lot of the times it is the first tone.

    Hi! Poppy! A fan from China here~If ur troubled by language, I strongly recommend you a local brand called IFLYTEK and its most useful product named Yiba Immediate Translator. It's not expensive at all, and you simply connect it to your phone's 4G network or any wifi, talk via the machine, and the Chinese translation (by voice or by both voice and text in the advanced version) immediately pops out. The grammar and word choices are incredibly accurate. Very powerful and my dad carries that anywhere in US without trouble.

    Chinese uses unlocked phones. Just different companies use different frequency. You just go to the magazine shops or booth to get the SIM card. Of course you could go to the service branches of carrier companies I am from Shenzhen. The living pace is fast but if you go to parks to relax. For sure, it’s slow and relaxing, depending on where you are.

    Thank you, Poppy, for your videos which provide me the insights of living in China from pure American's perspective. I am planning to live in China for just one or two months to visit certain tourist sights. I was told not to bring my own phone but just to buy a cell in China after arrival. I want to be able to reply on myself to get around but not to be taken by the locals. So, what do you suggest in terms of the mobile choices. If I were to get a cell after I got there, would the retailer help me get the "wechat" up and running so I can make payments? Wow, so many questions in my mind. I am just so amazed how modern China is today. Thank you, again, for all your posting. :-)

      Mel Icious I don't want to make a Patreon account because money is not the reason I am making these TH-cam videos. I am going to make them regardless if people pay me to do them or not. Obviously money would be great but I would rather that money be given to somebody who needs it to start their dreams. I'm already in mine and the best gift I can receive now is not money but support from my viewers.
